We all have a first time. A wake-up call. A record that flips everything upside down. For me, it was Édith Nylon. And more than anything, it was her: Mylène Khaski.

I didn’t even know it was possible, to be that intense, that stylish, that fierce, without ever raising your voice. Mylène didn’t need to shout to be heard. She showed up, cool and confident, with that razor-sharp voice, those smart lyrics, and an attitude that said it all: I’m not here to please. I’m here to speak my truth.

At not even 18, she started Édith Nylon. First album in 1979: 80,000 copies sold, and everything took off from there. Bands like Téléphone, Higelin, and The Police? They were the ones calling Édith Nylon to open for them. In 1980, they recorded Johnny Johnny in London, and guess who came to lay down backing vocals and percussion? Mick Jones and Topper Headon from The Clash. Proof that even the international scene could feel it, this band had something. And that something was her.

Je ne savais pas encore que c’était possible, d’être aussi intense, aussi élégante, aussi dangereuse sans jamais hausser le ton. Mylène n’avait pas besoin de crier pour être entendue. Elle arrivait, droite dans ses bottes, avec sa voix tranchante, ses textes intelligents, et cette attitude qui disait tout : je ne suis pas là pour plaire. Je suis là pour dire.

À même pas 18 ans, elle fonde Édith Nylon. Premier album en 1979 : 80 000 exemplaires vendus, et tout s’enchaîne. Téléphone, Higelin, The Police, c’est eux qui les appellent pour ouvrir leurs concerts. En 1980, ils enregistrent Johnny Johnny à Londres, et qui vient poser des chœurs et des percus ? Mick Jones et Topper Headon des Clash. Preuve que même la scène internationale les sentait : ce groupe avait un truc. Et ce truc, c’était elle.

The day I bought that first vinyl, it wasn’t just a record. It was permission. Permission to be a girl and not fit into the “good girl” box. Permission to make noise. To shake things up. To think loud and never say sorry.

And then she vanished. Became a banker, then an exec in aviation. Almost like the whole ’80s rock scene had just been a detour. But for those of us who’d seen her on fire, she’d never left the center of the game.

And when she came back, 40 years later, it was still her. Same fire. Same look in her eyes. Like proof that you don’t fake that kind of flame.

Le jour où j’ai acheté ce premier vinyle, c’était plus qu’un disque. C’était une permission. Celle d’être une fille et de ne pas rentrer dans la case “sage”. Celle de faire du bruit. De déranger. De penser fort et de ne pas s’excuser.

Et puis elle a disparu. Elle est devenue banquière, boss dans l’aviation. Presque comme si la scène rock des années 80 n’avait été qu’un interlude. Mais pour nous, qui l’avions vue en flamme, elle n’avait jamais quitté le cœur du jeu.

Et quand elle est revenue, 40 ans plus tard, c’était toujours elle. Même intensité. Même regard. Comme une preuve qu’on ne triche pas avec ce feu-là.
