WITH THE RELEASE OF THE NEW ALBUM, YOU’RE NOW PART OF THE VERYCORDS ROASTER, WAS THE TRANSITION FROM NAPALM RECORD TO VERYCORDS A SMOOTH ONE?
Very smoothly, because we’d already made two albums with them previously, “post mortem Nihil Est” and “Tales of the Black Dawn”, and in fact we’d already signed with them for the previous album, but the firm offer arrived on the desk, I believe, barely 12 hours after we’d signed with Napalm, so in fact we’re back to normal.
I GET THE IMPRESSION THAT YOU’RE GOING BACK TO YOUR ROOTS A BIT WITH THIS ALBUM. WAS THIS YOUR INTENTION FROM THE OUTSET, AFTER EXPLORING OTHER HORIZONS, OR WAS IT A MATTER OF CHANCE INSPIRATION?
Yes, you’re a bit right, but I admit I’m a bit too wrapped up in my own work to talk to you about returning to our roots, because it’s pretty complicated to judge this kind of process. But, as you say, after having offered as wide a variety as possible of facets of the band, album after album, it was time to go back to what we’d had the most fun doing in our discography and bring it up to date with our current know-how.
YOU’VE BEEN DESCRIBED AS A DEATH BAND, A MODERN METAL BAND, ETC. IS THERE A LABEL YOU’RE MOST COMFORTABLE WITH?
Metal band is fine!
ARE THERE ANY BANDS YOU DRAW INSPIRATION FROM?
Well, I avoid listening to metal when I’m composing, so I’d be tempted to say as little as possible. However, of course, like all artists, we started out inspired by our idols, and for me it was Metallica, Pantera, bands like that.

AVEC LA SORTIE DU NOUVEL ALBUM, MAINTENANT VOUS FAITES PARTI DU ROASTER DE VERYCORDS, EST-CE QUE LA TRANSITION ENTRE NAPALM RECORD ET VERYCORDS S’EST FAITE EN DOUCEUR ?
En grande douceur parce qu’on a déjà fait deux albums chez eux précédemment, « post mortem Nihil Est » et « Tales of the Black Dawn » et en fait on aurait signé chez eux déjà sur le précédent album mais l’offre ferme est arrivée sur le bureau je crois à peine 12h après qu’on ai signé chez Napalm, donc en fait on est revenu à la normal.
J’AI L’IMPRESSION QUE VOUS REVENEZ UN PEU AUX SOURCES AVEC CET ALBUM, EST-CE QUE C’ÉTAIT UNE VOLONTÉ DEPUIS LE DÉBUT, APRÈS AVOIR EXPLORER D’AUTRES HORIZONS OU C’EST LE HASARD DE L’INSPIRATION QUI A FAIT QUE ?
Oui tu as un peu raison, après j’avoue que j’ai un peu trop la tête dans le guidon pour te parler de retour aux sources, parce que c’est assez compliqué de juger ce genre de process mais effectivement, comme tu dis après avoir proposé une variété aussi grande que possible de facettes du groupe, album après album, c’était le moment de retourner sur ce qui nous avais le plus amusé à faire sur notre discographie et de le remettre au goût du jour avec notre savoir-faire actuel.
VOUS AVEZ ÉTÉ DÉCRIT COMME UN GROUPE DE DEATH, DE MODERN METAL ETC, EST-CE QU’IL Y A UNE ÉTIQUETTE DANS LAQUELLE VOUS VOUS SENTEZ LE PLUS À L’AISE ?
Groupe de metal c’est très bien !
EST-CE QU’IL Y A UN OU DES GROUPES DONT VOUS VOUS INSPIREZ ?
Alors j’évite d’écouter du metal en période de composition, donc je serais tenté de te dire, le moins possible, toutefois, bien entendu comme tout artiste, on a commencé avec l’inspiration de nos idoles, moi c’était Metallica, Pantera, ce genre de groupes quoi.

ON THE NEW ALBUM, “MINOTAUR” IS REALLY MY FAVORITE TRACK. CAN YOU TELL ME ABOUT THE INSPIRATION BEHIND THIS SONG, AND WHAT IT REPRESENTS FOR THE BAND?
Well, it’s probably the most brutal track on the album, I think, along with “Arrival of the Dead”.
I think this track represents a bit my Panteresque influences, with big riffs that can be found similarly in some great Pantera compositions, and that’s something that’s ingrained in me, writing this kind of striking riffs is close to my heart, and that was the idea I had for the intro riff, then for the rest of the song you can also feel my black metal influences notably on the pre-chorus and the chorus, that’s the general idea of the composition of this track.
ARE THERE ANY ELEMENTS IN THIS TRACK THAT YOU FIND PARTICULARLY SUCCESSFUL IN TERMS OF COMPOSITION OR PRODUCTION, OR ANY MOMENTS THAT YOU PREFER?
My two favorite moments in the song are the saturated “pizzi cati” on the chorus, with the variation on the beat and the dotted quarter note, and also the reprise after the bridge on the lead guitar. There’s a passage with a progression, delay guitar, which I enjoyed instilling in the song.
DIFFERENT BREED HAS BEEN WELL RECEIVED BY FANS. WHAT’S THE MOST MEMORABLE REACTION YOU’VE RECEIVED?
First of all, it’s true what you say, and it’s something very new for us, because like all artists, we’re used to having a certain ratio between happy and unhappy people, which is normal when you put yourself out there, it’s the game. But this is something quite new, because 100% of the feedback has been positive, so it’s both a new and very welcome position to be in.
The review that stood out for me – I think I read it the day before yesterday – was a review of Minotaur on YouTube, which said “for example, this is metal”!

DANS LE NOUVEL ALBUM, « MINOTAUR » C’EST VRAIMENT MON TITRE PRÉFÉRÉ, EST-CE QUE TU PEUX ME PARLER DE L’INSPIRATION DERRIÈRE CETTE CHANSON, ET CE QUELLE REPRÉSENTE POUR LE GROUPE ?
Alors c’est sûrement le titre le plus brutal de l’album je pense, avec « Arrival of the dead ».
Je pense que ce titre représente un peu mes influences Panteresque, avec des gros riffs qu’on peut retrouver en similitude dans de belles compos de Pantera, et ça c’est un truc qui est encré en moi, écrire ce genre de riffs marquants me tient à cœur, et c’était l’idée que j’avais pour le riff d’intro, ensuite pour le reste de la chanson on peut ressentir aussi mes influences black metal notamment sur le pré refrain et le refrain, c’est ça l’idée générale de la composition de ce morceau.
EST-CE QU’IL Y A DES ÉLÉMENTS DANS CE TITRE LA QUE TU TROUVES PARTICULIÈREMENT RÉUSSI EN TERMES DE COMPOSITION, DE PRODUCTION, OU DES MOMENTS QUE TU PRÉFÈRES ?
Les deux moments que je préfère dans ce morceau, « pizzi cati » saturés sur le refrain avec cette variation sur le temps et sur la noire pointée, et aussi la reprise après le pont sur le lead guitare, il y a un passage avec une progression, delay guitare, que j’ai pris plaisir à instiller dans la chanson.
DIFFERENT BREED A ÉTÉ BIEN ACCUEILLI PAR LES FANS, QUELLE EST LA RÉACTION LA PLUS MÉMORABLE QUE TU AS RECU ?
Déjà c’est vrai ce que tu dis, et c’est quelque chose de très nouveau pour nous, parce qu’on a comme tous les artistes, l’habitude d’avoir un certain ratio entre les gens contents et les gens pas content, ce qui est normal quand tu te mets à nu, c’est le jeu. Mais là c’est assez nouveau, car 100 % des retours sont positifs, donc c’est à la fois nouveau et très appréciable comme position.
L’avis qui m’a marqué, je l’ai lu je crois avant-hier, c’est un avis concernant Minotaur sur YouTube et qui disait « pour l’exemple c’est ça le metal » !

CERBERUS HAS ALSO BEEN VERY WELL RECEIVED, CAN YOU TELL ME MORE ABOUT THE CONCEPT BEHIND THE CLIP?
Well, the main idea, not only for this clip, but also for the clip that will be released for Minautor next week. I think it was important to set up the line-up so that people could identify it, so there are no actors, no special effects, no tricks. We worked with two directors who mainly do advertising and hip-hop in Marseilles, because we wanted to get a fresh take on metal.
SO YOU ANTICIPATED MY NEXT QUESTION, I WAS GOING TO ASK WHAT THE NEXT VIDEO CLIP WAS, NOW I KNOW, I WAS HOPING IT WOULD BE VEGA, BECAUSE IT’S ALSO ONE OF MY FAVORITE TRACKS ON THE ALBUM.
It should be later too!!!
HOW DOES THE CREATIVE PROCESS WORK? DOES ONE MEMBER TAKE THE INITIATIVE? OR IS IT REALLY COLLABORATIVE?
I compose everything from A to Z.
IS THERE A MEMORABLE MOMENT YOU EXPERIENCED DURING THE ALBUM’S CONCEPTION?
I think the moment that made the biggest impression on me was when I composed the closing riff for Cerberus. I composed it in the early hours of the morning, on my acoustic guitar, and it didn’t give much away, but I remember I was too happy with it, and I quickly recorded it on my phone so I wouldn’t forget it, and usually riffs like that, which are song endings, I compose after I’ve composed everything else, whereas there I composed this riff and I said to myself “it’s so punchy, I absolutely must be able to get it into a song”.
But it was too long to be a verse, too long for a chorus, so it found its own place at the end of a song, and the challenge was to get it there. It was a fun exercise to do and a new challenge that I enjoyed taking up.
HOW DO YOU MANAGE THE EVOLUTION OF YOUR MUSICAL INSPIRATIONS OVER THE YEARS?
I look back over our discography, and I ask myself what I haven’t come up with yet, and I try to bring freshness, album after album, and then I ask myself “what have I already done and what has really made me happy and proud of myself” and so that was kind of the main idea behind theorizing this album.

CERBERUS A ÉGALEMENT REÇU UN ACCUEIL SUPER POSITIF, EST-CE QUE TU PEUX M’EN DIRE PLUS SUR LA CONCEPTION DU CLIP, SUR LE CONCEPT DE CELUI-CI ?
Alors l’idée principale, non seulement de clip là, mais aussi du clip qui va sortir pour Minautor la semaine prochaine. C’est vraiment de faire la part belle au line up, je pense que c’était important d’installer le line up et que les gens puissent l’identifier, donc il n’y a pas d’acteur il n’y a pas d’effets spéciaux, il n’y a pas d’artifices. On est passé par deux réalisateurs qui font essentiellement de la pub et du hip hop marseillais, car on avait envie d’avoir cet œil nouveau sur le metal.
DU COUP TU AS ANTICIPÉ MA PROCHAINE QUESTION, J’ALLAIS DEMANDER QUEL ÉTAIT LE PROCHAIN CLIP, MAINTENANT JE SAIS, J’AVAIS ESPOIR QUE CE SOIT VEGA, CAR C’EST AUSSI UN DE MES TITRES PREFERE DE L’ALBUM.

COMMENT SE DÉROULE LE PROCESSUS CRÉATIF ? EST-CE QU’IL Y A UN MEMBRE QUI PREND PLUS L’INITIATIVE ? OU C’EST VRAIMENT COLLABORATIF ?
Je compose tout de A à Z.
EST-CE QU’IL Y A UN MOMENT MÉMORABLE QUE VOUS AVEZ VECU PENDANT LA CONCEPTION DE L’ALBUM ?
Je pense que le moment qui m’a le plus marqué c’était quand j’ai composé le riff de fin de Cerberus.J’ai composé au petit matin, sur ma guitare sèche, ça ne donnait pas grand-chose, mais je me rappelle que j’en était trop content, et je l’ai vite enregistré sur mon téléphone pour pas l’oublier, et d’habitude les riffs comme ça qui sont des Ending de chanson, je les compose après avoir composé tout le reste, alors que là j’ai composé ce riff et je me suis dit « il est tellement percutant, qu’il faut absolument que je puisse l’amener dans une chanson ».
Mais il était trop long pour que ça puisse être un couplet, trop long pour un refrain, du coup il a de lui-même trouver sa place pour la fin d’un morceau et le défi a été de l’amener. C’était un exercice amusant à faire et un nouveau challenge que j’ai aimé relever.
COMMENT TU GERES L’ÉVOLUTION DE TES INSPIRATIONS MUSICALES AU FIL DES ANNÉES ?
Je me retourne sur notre discographie, et je me demande ce que j’ai pas encore proposé et j’essaie d’amener de la fraîcheur, album après album, et la je me suis demandé « qu’est-ce que j’ai déjà fait et qu’est ce qui m’a vraiment rendu heureux et fier de moi » et donc c’était un peu l’idée principal derrière la théorisation de cet album.

ARE THERE ANY TOUR ANECDOTES OR FUNNY MOMENTS YOU’D LIKE TO SHARE?
I tend to answer this question with: what happens on the road should stay on the road. But what I can say in general is that we’ve had extremely few bad moments, but the relationship with the other bands, the other Crews, the people in the venues, the public etc., frankly, when it’s all over, I can say that everything went well!
DO YOU HAVE ANY ADVICE FOR YOUNG SINGERS JUST STARTING OUT?
To start with, do as the great painters do, start copying, do covers, to find your grain, to understand how it works, because the voice is a… rather special instrument. Once you’re satisfied with this stage, start looking for your own style, and ask yourself what hasn’t been done yet, and what could make you special. And above all, take care of yourself and don’t overdo it, because this instrument is fragile.
LAST QUESTION: DO YOU HAVE A MESSAGE TO PASS ON TO THE FANS WHO HAVE BEEN FOLLOWING YOU FROM THE START?
I’d like to tell them that they shouldn’t be so destabilized when the band comes up with something different, because that’s what Dagoba is all about, and the band’s soul and wildness will never disappear!

Y A-T-IL DES ANECDOTES DE TOURNÉES OU DES MOMENTS AMUSANTS QUE TU AIMERAI PARTAGER ?
J’ai tendance à répondre à cette question par : ce qui se passe sur la route doit rester sur la route. Mais ce que je peux dire d’une façon générale, c’est qu’il nous est arrivé extrêmement peu de mauvais moments, mais le relationnel avec les autres groupes, les autres Crew, les gens dans les salles, le public etc., franchement, quand tout ça sera fini, je pourrais dire que tout s’est bien passé !
EST-CE QUE TU AURAIS DES CONSEILS À DONNER AUX JEUNES CHANTEURS QUI DÉBUTANT ?
Pour commencer, faites comme les grands peintres, commencez à faire de la copie, faites de la cover, pour trouver votre grain, pour comprendre comment ça marche, parce que la voix est un. Instrument assez particulier, et une fois que vous serez satisfait de cette étape-là, commencez à chercher votre propre style, et demandez-vous ce qui n’a pas encore été fait, et qu’est ce qui pourrait faire votre particularité. Et surtout prenez soin de vous et ne faites pas trop d’excès, car cet instrument est fragile.
DERNIÈRE QUESTION, EST-CE QUE AS, UN MESSAGE À PASSER AUX FANS QUI TE SUIVENT DEPUIS LE DÉBUT ?
Je voudrais leur dire qu’il ne faut pas être déstabilisé à ce point quand le groupe propose quelque chose de différent , parce que c’est l’idée même de Dagoba et l’âme du groupe et sa sauvagerie ne disparaîtra jamais !!!
