“Unfathonable”, that’s the only way to describe this album from the German band Vianova. Seriously, you’d need to invent new words to even begin to capture Hit It! ; it’s way beyond the unexpected, beyond anything you could imagine.

But words aren’t enough, you’d also have to re-imagine a whole genre… R&B CORE? Djent&B? Why not, since nods to early 2000s mainstream vibes pop up everywhere, from the backing vocals to the samples. And that’s not even the half of it. As if that wasn’t already wild enough, they throw in synths, erotic movie-style sax, choirs, acoustic piano and guitar passages, movie samples, thunderstorms, and even revving motorcycles… So don’t waste your brain trying to pin down the genre, it’s impossible. Just sit back and enjoy this delightful, chaotic masterpiece.

« Inatendable » voici comment on pourrait qualifier cet album des Allemands de Vianova. Car oui, Il faudrait inventer des mots pour décrire ce « Hit it » tellement il est au-delà de l’inattendu et du concevable.

 Mais plus que des mots, il faudrait aussi re-imaginer un style… R&B CORE ? Djent&B ? Pourquoi pas, tant les références au genre mainstream phare des 2000’s sont présentes (tant dans les back-vocals que dans les samples). Mais ce n’est pas que cela, comme si c’était trop simple, ils ont aussi ajouté à leur fusion du synthé, du saxo de films érotiques, des chœurs, des passages acoustiques au piano ou à la guitare, des samples de films, de bruits d’orage ou encore de moto… Alors pas la peine de vous triturez la tête trop longtemps sur le style, c’est impossible, profitez juste de ce réjouissant bordel organisé…

Squier Talk

The album kicks off with an intro that, without the drums, could easily make you think you’ve just hit play on a Kanye West or Daft Punk record. But very quickly, a guitar and bass riff storms in to remind us that we’re definitely in djent/metalcore territory. Vocally, Alexander Kerski switches between vocoder, clean singing, and harsh screams (fry and false chord). It’s the only track with vocoder — don’t freak out.

Mas Rapido

The intro of this track will take longtime listeners back to those chill Hôtel Costes-style mixes, but very soon Alexander tells Paul Vogelgesang, the drummer and brother of guitarist Felix Vogelgesang, to “hit it!” (the title of the album, by the way), and once again, a torrent of metalcore crashes down on us.

Wheel of Fortune

This track fuses funky grooves with atmospheric metalcore, sprinkled with R&B-style female backing vocals, yes, somehow it works.

Oh No (Believer)

Somebody slipped Justin Timberlake over a Barry White sample? The bass on this track (Raoul Zillani) is absolutely insane, just like on many others.

Marimba

A hypnotic track built on a looping guitar riff (later joined by synths) with backing synth chords interspersed with clean vocals, occasional fry screams, and R&B-style female choirs.

L’album débute par une introduction qui sans la batterie nous ferait croire que nous avons lancé un album de Kanye West ou bien encore Daft punk mais très vite se dresse un riff de guitare et de basse qui nous rappelle que nous écoutons bien du djent/metalcore.  Au niveau chant, Alexander Kerski alterne vocoder, chant clair et chant crié (fry et false chord). Seul morceau en vocoder n’ayez pas peur…

Mas rapido :

L’intro du morceau rappellera aux anciens les mixes bien chill de l’hôtel costes de l’époque mais très vite Alexander ordonne à Paul Vogelgesang, le batteur et frère du guitariste Felix Vogelgesang de « hit it » (tape ça !), titre de l’album au passage et de nouveau un torrent de metalcore s’abat sur nous.

Wheel of fortune :

Le titre mélange funk et metalcore atmosphérique avec des chœurs féminin de chansons de R&B (comme si c’était possible.).

Oh no (Believer) :

Quelqu’un a changé pour mettre du Justin Timberlake sur un sample de Barry White ? La basse est incroyable sur ce morceau (Raoul Zillani) comme sur beaucoup.

Marimba :

Un morceau très hypnotique avec cette partie de guitare en boucle (puis de synté) et ses backtracks d‘accords au synthé toujours coupés de chant clair parfois crié (fry) ou de chœurs féminins de R&B.

Melanchronic

The synth loop seems to carry on endlessly in a Kavinsky-style electro-futuristic vibe, but very quickly, a massive riff flips the mood. Then it softens again with piano, only to blast back into screaming, followed by an acoustic guitar-and-vocal interlude, thunderstorms, synths, a revving motorcycle, and back to that colossal riff (still with me?). Incredible, and somehow, it works flawlessly.

Whatever Alright

After a Timberlake-style intro riding a 100% R&B groove, the riff hits (as always), but this time it blends seamlessly with the rhythm, no breaks at all. The fusion is total, and suddenly, I’m moonwalking to Metalcore… Somebody stop me.

Future Nostalgia

Two More Hours kicks off Future Nostalgia, a track that surprises even if you think you’ve seen it all. While it carries some airy vibes, Vianova takes us into a dreamy nu-gaze territory, evoking bands like Love Is Noise or Blanket.

Uh Yaya

By now, the structure is classic: old-school R&B fused with a brick wall of metal. Add in a little growl, fry, false chord, and even some goat-like screams (as Alexander himself describes, check their Instagram; it’s a riot).

Obsolete

A touch of sax to close? This gorgeous track opens like an Alicia Keys piano ballad, showcasing Kerski’s vocal range, before exploding into a breathtaking chaos of screams and symphonic orchestration.

Melanchronic

La boucle de synté semble se prolonger sur ce morceau dans une ambiance électro-futuriste à la Kavinsky mais très vite un riff énorme change l’ambiance puis de nouveau de la douceur avec du piano, puis ça repart, ça scream, puis passage acoustique guitare voix, de l’orage, du synté, un bruit de moto et de nouveau ce riff énorme (vous suivez toujours ?). Incroyable mais ça fonctionne pourtant à mort…

Wathever alright ;

Après un préambule Timberlèsque sur un rythme 100% R&B, le riff arrive (comme toujours) mais cette fois-ci, il se fond sur la rythmique, pas de rupture du tout ici, la fusion est totale et ça y est je fais du moonwalk sur du Metalcore, arrêtez-moi…

Future Nostalgia :

Two more hours est une intro qui lance future nostalgia, titre qui surprend si l’on peut encore l’être car si cela chante tout de même en vibes, Vianova nous propose ici un morceau de style nu gaze, on pensera à des groupes comme love is noise ou blanket.

Uh yaya :

Structure désormais classique depuis le début de l’écoute : R&B (mais plus à l’ancienne cette fois-ci) et mur de briques. A noter, un peu de growl, du fry et de la false chord ou cris de chèvre comme il le définit lui-même (allez voir sur leur instagram, leur compte vaut le coup, c’est bourré d’humour).

Obsolete

Un peu de saxo pour finir ? Très beau morceau qui démarre comme une chanson au piano d’Alicia Keys où Kerski nous montre l’étendue de son talent au chant pour finir dans un chaos magnifique de cris et d’orchestration symphonique.

Cet album OVNI est une pure récréation. Grâce à une technique irréprochable et  à des titres implacables,  Vianova arrive à nous faire naviguer joyeusement dans leur univers  aux milliards de planètes pourtant éclatées au sol. Ces extraterrestres  complètement fous avec leur groove à la Timbaland vous donneront envie de danser à la NSYNC sur des riffs allant pourtant parfois jusqu’au deathcore. On a hâte d’acceuillir la bande au goat scream goat chez nous pour vivre en live cette folie furieuse.
