Following a recent EP in 2021, the band have released their eagerly-awaited debut LP, Lustre. The Buoys also have three excellent EPs to their name, making them the new darlings of Australian alternative rock.

Après un récent EP en 2021, le groupe a sorti son premier LP très attendu : Lustre. The Buoys, ce sont aussi trois excellents EPs qui les ont transformés en nouvelles chouchoutes du rock alternatif australien.

The album starts really strong with “Settle Petal”. It’s a fun song that takes a more punk/ garage rock approach for our little ears’ pleasure. The disorienting prechorus and magistral solo from guitarist Hilary Geddes will make you salivate. The girls are at their best on “Subject A” and “I Think I’m In Love With You”. “Subject A” is playful – a big thanks to the cow bell-  with a riot girrl feel to it. Cool harmonised vocals on the chorus and the guitar takes us on a whirlpool at the beginning of the bridge and we get to witness the guitarist Hilary Geddes’ impeccable technique. During this time you can hear constant drums by Tess Wilkin and the bass by Courtney Cunningham going faster accompanied by the lyrics hammering the point being made.

L’album démarre sur les chapeaux de roues avec “Settle Petal“. C’est une chanson entraînante qui adopte une approche plus punk/garage rock pour notre plus grand plaisir auditif. Le pré-refrain déroutant et le solo magistral de la guitariste Hilary Geddes vous mettront l’eau à la bouche. Les filles sont à leur summum sur “Subject A” et “I Think I’m In Love With You“. “Subject A” est espiègle, joueuse- un grand merci à la cowbell – avec une sensation de riot girrl. Les harmonies vocales sont cool sur le refrain et la guitare nous emmènent dans un tourbillon au début du bridge, où nous pouvons apprécier l’impeccable technique de la guitariste Hilary Geddes. Pendant ce temps, la batterie est constante et la basse accélérée accompagnent les paroles martelant le point soulevé.

A number of ambiance shifts will happen in the album which let’s us contemplate all that the Buoys has to offer. We can see their range. And often times we’re transported to a world of insecurities and deep cuts like on songs like : “Holding On“, “Guard My Heart“, “Keeping Busy” or “Ahead of Myself“. “Holding On” is a solid rock ballad. The subtle fuzz touch on guitar gives it a new perspective while the singer continues on holding on hope. “Guard My heart” has an almost Americana feel to it with the guitar slowly strumming each string during the verses and the tone of the rhythm guitar. Then the acoustic guitar comes in the bridge which makes it bigger and fuller. But don’t be worried, the vocal performance by Zoe Catterall is astonishing.

L’album présente plusieurs changements d’ambiance qui nous permettent d’apprécier toute l’étendue de ce que The Buoys ont à offrir. Nous pouvons voir leur diversité. Et souvent, nous sommes transportés dans un monde d’insécurités et de deep-cuts, comme sur des chansons telles que “Holding On“, “Guard My Heart“, “Keeping Busy” ou “Ahead of Myself“. “Holding On” est une solide ballade rock. Le léger effet de fuzz sur la guitare nous donne une nouvelle perspective tandis que la chanteuse continue d’espérer ( jeu de mot: holding on hope). “Guard My Heart” a presque une atmosphère americana avec la guitare qui effleure chaque corde lentement pendant les couplets, et le ton de la guitare rythmique. Puis la guitare acoustique arrive dans le bridge, ce qui le rend plus grand et plus complet. Mais ne vous inquiétez pas, la performance vocale de Zoe Catterall reste stupéfiante.

“Dry Winter” is a powerful song about falling in love where the beat is carried by the awesome drumwork of Tess Wilkin which is more apparent during the bridge. “Borders” has a sunny beginning. And” I think I’m in Love With You” might be your new pop-punk anthem. All of those little things that make this album so interesting and vast.You won’t be disappointed. The album finishes with “Totally Completely Fine” a song a bit garage rock reimagined by The Buoys. This song closes a very interesting walk around The Buoys town and for a first album you can get a lot for your money. A very good start for the band.

“Dry Winter ” est une chanson puissante sur le fait de tomber amoureuse, où le rythme est porté par le remarquable jeu de batterie de Tess Wilkin, particulièrement évident pendant le pont. “Borders” commence de façon ensoleillée. Et “I Think I’m in Love With You” pourrait devenir votre nouvel hymne pop-punk. Toutes ces petites choses qui rendent cet album si intéressant et vaste. Vous ne serez pas déçu. L’album se termine avec “Totally Completely Fine“, une chanson un peu garage rock réinventée par The Buoys. Cette chanson clôt une promenade très intéressante à travers la ville des Buoys, et pour un premier album, vous en avez pour votre argent. Un très bon départ pour le groupe.
