Is this a joke? A bet gone wrong? Who let Jordan Fish take the wheel and said, “Here, make your own album using Sam Carter’s voice”? Because that’s exactly what The Sky, The Earth & All Between feels like from start to finish. Architects can evolve, sure, but they still need to sound like Architects. Instead, we’re left with a patchwork of sounds and influences that make you question what’s left of the band’s identity.

Est-ce une blague ? Un pari qui a mal tourné ? Qui a laissé Jordan Fish aux commandes en lui disant : “Tiens, fais ton album avec la voix de Sam Carter” ? Parce que c’est l’impression que The Sky, The Earth & All Between donne du début à la fin. Architects peut évoluer, bien sûr, mais encore faut-il que ça reste Architects. Là, on se retrouve avec un patchwork de sons et d’influences qui fait douter de l’identité du groupe.

A confusing detour

From the very first notes, something feels off. The opener, “Elegy“, sets the mood with a polished, slick atmosphere, but one that already feels sterilized. It quickly becomes clear that this album is going to swing between alternative rock, stadium-friendly metal, and a sprinkle of electronic influences. It’s well-produced, sure, but where’s the raw, visceral energy that made Architects Architects?

Next up, “Everything ends“, a track that wants to sound energetic but ends up following the same overused formula. Mechanical riffs, an easy-to-chant chorus, and production so polished it almost feels clinical. It’s efficient, yes, but also generic. Is this still Architects, or just another metalcore band trying to play it safe? “Broken mirror“, which had potential, ultimately lacks impact and drowns in an overproduced soundscape.

Then comes “Dead Butterflies 2.0“, sorry, I mean “Curse“. Close your eyes, and you might mistake it for a B-side from For Those That Wish To Exist, or even a leftover BMTH track. It’s got a solid groove, it’s built for arena singalongs, but it lacks bite. That sincerity, that fire that made this band stand out? Nowhere to be found.

And that’s pretty much the case for most of the album. “Chandelier“, with its atmospheric keyboards and underwhelming verses, feels like one of BMTH’s weaker experimental moments.

Un virage qui déboussole

Dès les premières notes, quelque chose cloche. L’ouverture avec “Elegy” pose l’ambiance avec une vibe ultra-propre, léchée, mais déjà aseptisée. On sent qu’on va nous balader entre rock alternatif, metal calibré pour les stades et relents d’électro. C’est bien foutu, mais où est passée la rage brute et viscérale d’Architects ?

Puis il y a “Everything ends“, un titre qui se veut plus énergique mais qui tombe dans une structure déjà vue mille fois. Riffs mécaniques, refrain facile à chanter, et une production tellement propre qu’elle en devient glaciale. C’est efficace, mais c’est générique. Architects ou n’importe quel groupe de metalcore grand public ? La question se pose. “Broken mirror,” pourtant prometteur dans ses intentions, manque de punch et s’embourbe dans des effets de production surchargés.

Vient ensuite “Dead Butterflies 2.0“, pardon, “Curse“. Si on ferme les yeux, on pourrait croire à un B-side de For Those That Wish To Exist, voire à une face B de Bring Me The Horizon. Le morceau a son groove, il est taillé pour être chanté en chœur en live, mais il manque ce mordant, cette sincérité qui faisait toute la force du groupe.

Et c’est comme ça sur une bonne partie de l’album. “Chandelier“, avec ses claviers atmosphériques et ses couplets sous-mixés, fait penser aux expérimentations les plus molles de BMTH.

A glimpse of Architects…almost

A light at the end of the tunnel? “Seeing Red“. Finally, a track that actually feels like Architects. Controlled intensity, rawer dynamics, and a chorus that actually hits. This one works because it sounds genuine. It could’ve easily fit on Holy Hell, and no one would have questioned it. Too bad it’s the lone survivor in an otherwise disoriented record.

Le moment où Architects revient… enfin presque

Un moment de lumière dans cette traversée du désert ? “Seeing Red“. Là, on retrouve un semblant de ce qui faisait le charme d’Architects : une intensité maîtrisée, une dynamique plus brute et un refrain qui accroche pour de vrai. Ce morceau fonctionne, parce qu’il sonne sincère. Il aurait pu être sur Holy Hell et personne n’aurait crié au scandale. Dommage qu’il soit isolé au milieu du reste.

A failed tribute band?

The real issue with The Sky, The Earth & All Between? It feels more like a Jordan Fish album featuring Architects rather than an Architects album. There’s a clear attempt to broaden their sound, to appeal to a larger audience, but in trying to be everything at once, they’ve lost themselves. This isn’t evolution, it’s dilution.

So, what’s the takeaway? If you love early Architects or even their Lost Forever // Lost Together – Holy Hell era, don’t get your hopes up. If you’re looking for Architects playing radio-friendly metal with an undeniable BMTH influence, you might enjoy it. But for the rest of us, the real question remains: where the hell is Architects?

Un tribute band raté ?

En fait, le vrai problème de The Sky, The Earth & All Between, c’est qu’il sonne plus comme un album de Jordan Fish que comme un album d’Architects. Il y a une volonté d’élargir leur son, de devenir plus grand public, mais à force de vouloir plaire à tout le monde, ils se perdent. Ce n’est pas une évolution, c’est une dissolution.

Alors, que retenir de cet album ? Si vous aimez le Architects des débuts ou même de l’ère Lost Forever // Lost Together – Holy Hell, passez votre chemin. Si vous cherchez un Architects qui joue la carte du metal FM avec une patte BMTH-ienne évidente, vous y trouverez peut-être votre compte. Mais pour les autres, difficile de ne pas se demander : où est passé Architects ?
