My first encounter with Sylosis came through the album Cycle of Suffering. At the time, Josh Middleton, the band’s driving force, was also holding down the role of lead guitarist in Architects. The band had been on hiatus for five years, and looking back, that record clearly marked their comeback, as well as the moment Sylosis became Josh Middleton’s main focus again. Since 2020, the band has been fueled by a surge of creative energy, releasing Cycle of Suffering (2020), A Sign of Things to Come (2023), The Path (EP, 2024), and now The New Flesh.

Mon premier contact avec Sylosis s’est fait à travers l’album Cycle of Suffering. A l’époque, Josh Middleton, la figure de proue du groupe, occupait aussi le post de guitariste lead dans le groupe Architects. Cela faisait 5 ans que le groupe était en hiatus et, rétrospectivement, cet album a marqué le retour du groupe et le moment où Sylosis est redevenue la priorité de Josh Middleton. Depuis 2020, le groupe est propulsé par une forte énergie créatrice et a sorti Cycle of Suffering (2020), A Sign of Things to Come (2023), The Path (EP,2024) et enfin The New Flesh.

The album title itself sounds like a promise of evolution, reinforced by the cover artwork showing a face peeling away from its skin to reveal a pure, glowing form underneath. And the promise delivers. On this record, the band returns to the sharp blend of thrash metal and metalcore that made their name, but this time they refine it even further. It almost feels like, since their comeback, the band has been carefully cutting and polishing a precious stone.

The album kicks off with “Beneath the Surface,” and right away the tone is set. The track is fast, razor-sharp, and even carries a slight groove to it. One thing that stands out immediately is the quality of the mix: everything sits perfectly in place, it sounds crystal clear, and no instrument overshadows the others. Then “All Glory, No Valor” comes in like a chant-ready anthem, in the same spirit as what bands like Machine Head or Kreator have delivered in the past—exactly the kind of track I’d love to experience live one day.

Le nom de l’album sonne comme la promesse d’une évolution, renforcé par la pochete de l’album montrant un visage se séparant de sa peau et laissant apparaître une forme pure et étincelante. La promesse est remplie : dans cet album, le groupe revient à ce savant mélange de thrash metal et de metalcore qui a fait son succès et le raffine. Comme si, depuis leur retour, les membres du groupe s’attachaient à tailler et polir une pierre précieuse.

L’album s’ouvre sur Beneath the surface et directement le ton est donné. Ce morceau est rapide, précis et a même un petit côté groovy. On remarque vite la bonne qualité du mix, tout est à sa place, il est très clair et aucun instrument ne prend le pas sur un autre. Le titre All glory, no valor propose un hymne à scander, dans la veine de ce qu’ont pu faire Machine Head ou Kreator et que j’espère bien voir en live un jour.

For me, the duo of “Lacerations” and “Mirror Mirror” forms the core of the album. “Lacerations” dives into questions of identity and what truly makes us feel alive, asking the haunting line: “Are you alive, or is it just a chemical feeling?” The song carries a more melancholic tone, filled with uncertainty that almost borders on despair. “Mirror Mirror,” on the other hand, erupts as a full-blown outburst of rage. It channels a fierce anger toward the lack of honesty in our society and the countless people hiding behind false appearances. The track feels like a call for change, driven by lines such as: “Remove your skin, are you still the same? Mirror, to your soul. Which mask best deceives them all?”

The album then rolls on with tracks like “Adore My Throne,” which carries an epic dimension reminiscent of the compositions found on Cycle of Suffering. And finally, “The New Flesh,” the title track, stands as a perfect summary of the album itself: sharp, powerful, and undeniably gripping.

Le diptyque Lacerations et Mirror Mirror forment, pour moi, le cœur de l’album. Lacerations aborde la question de la personnalité, des raisons qui font qu’on est vivant et demande « Are you alive, or is it just a chemical feeling ? » Cette chanson est plus mélancolique, pleine d’incertitudes que l’on pourrait presque interpréter comme de la détresse. Mirror Mirror est un véritable cri de rage, laissant exploser une colère vive envers le manque d’honnêteté dans notre société, envers toute ces personnes qui se parent de faux semblants. Cete chanson est une invitation au changement : “Remove your skin, are you still the same? Mirror, to your soul. Which mask best deceives them all? “

L’album s’enchaîne ensuite avec notamment Adore my throne qui a une dimension épique proche de ce qu’on retrouvait dans les compositions de Cycle of suffering et The New Flesh, le titre éponyme qui est une parfaite synthèse de l’album : précis, impactant et entrainant.
