If a debut album is usually about introducing yourself to the world, the sophomore record is where you prove you’re not just a one-hit wonder. And for Sweet Pill, that was clearly the challenge. After the huge buzz around their first album, the Philadelphia band had to come back with something that really delivered. The good news? Still There’s A Glow shows they didn’t just live up to the hype… they seriously leveled up.

Si le premier album sert souvent à se présenter au monde, le deuxième sert à prouver qu’on est pas là par hasard. Et avec Sweet Pill, c’était clairement le défi. Après l’accueil hyper chaud de leur premier disque, le groupe de Philadelphie devait revenir avec quelque chose de solide. Bonne nouvelle : Still There’s A Glow montre que le groupe a pas juste confirmé… ils ont clairement level up.

A More Ambitious Follow-Up That Still Feels Genuine

On this second album, Sweet Pill keeps the emo/Midwest DNA they’re known for, but with a much broader and more confident approach. Where Where The Heart Is sometimes felt like a personal diary set to music, Still There’s A Glow sounds like a band that’s grown into itself after hitting the road everywhere.

You can tell the songs were written with the stage in mind. Some choruses are clearly built for the whole room to shout along to, and several moments hit like the band is already picturing the crowd going wild in front of them. The result is a record that feels more dynamic and alive, while still holding onto a real emotional core.

Sur ce deuxième album, Sweet Pill garde l’ADN emo/midwest qu’on leur connaît, mais avec un côté beaucoup plus large et assumé. Là où Where The Heart Is ressemblait parfois à un journal intime mis en musique, Still There’s A Glow sonne comme un groupe qui a pris confiance après avoir tourné partout.

On sent que les morceaux ont été pensés pour la scène. Certains refrains sont clairement faits pour être chantés par toute la salle, et plusieurs passages explosent comme si le groupe imaginait déjà le public en train de pogoter devant eux. Ça donne un disque plus dynamique, plus vivant, mais qui garde quand même une vraie sensibilité.

A Real Band Effort

One of the coolest things about this album is that you can really feel Sweet Pill working as a band, not just as a project built around a singer. The guitars weave together much more, the drumming is super energetic, and the arrangements feel fuller and more layered.

The songs often move from super melodic moments into big emotional swells. The transitions are really smooth, which gives the tracks a sense of movement instead of sticking to just one mood.

And most importantly, there’s a lot more interplay between voices. The group vocal moments add a very organic, almost communal feel that works perfectly with the band’s emo roots.

Un vrai travail de groupe

Un des trucs cool sur cet album, c’est qu’on sent que Sweet Pill fonctionne vraiment comme un groupe, pas juste comme un projet autour d’une chanteuse. Les guitares s’entremêlent beaucoup plus, la batterie est hyper nerveuse et les arrangements sont plus riches.

Les morceaux passent souvent d’un moment super mélodique à une montée émotionnelle bien intense. Les transitions sont hyper fluides et ça donne des chansons qui évoluent beaucoup au lieu de rester sur un seul mood.

Et surtout, il y a plus de voix qui se répondent. Les passages chantés à plusieurs donnent un côté très organique, presque communautaire, qui marche super bien avec le côté emo du groupe.

Emotions Still at the Center

Even though the music has grown in scope, the album remains deeply introspective. The lyrics deal a lot with pressure, self-doubt, and the feeling of growing up while everything around you is moving way too fast.

It’s a record that often touches on that moment when you realize some things have to burn down so something else can grow in their place. A lot of the lyrics lean on imagery of fire, heat, and ashes to talk about burnout, anger, and rebuilding yourself. You can tell these songs came out of a pretty intense period for the band—between the exhaustion of touring and the pressure to prove they could go further than their debut.

But despite those moments of doubt, the album stays surprisingly hopeful. Beneath the toughest passages, there’s always the idea that a spark is still there somewhere. Even when everything feels like it’s falling apart, there’s still a chance to start again, to light something back up and rebuild in a different way.

Des émotions toujours au centre

Même si la musique a pris de l’ampleur, l’album reste très introspectif. Les paroles parlent beaucoup de pression, de doute et de grandir quand tout va trop vite autour de toi.

C’est un disque qui parle pas mal du moment où tu réalises que certaines choses doivent brûler pour que d’autres puissent exister. Beaucoup de textes utilisent des images de feu, de chaleur ou de cendres pour parler d’épuisement, de colère et de reconstruction. On sent que les chansons viennent d’une période assez intense pour le groupe, entre la fatigue des tournées et la pression de devoir prouver qu’ils pouvaient aller plus loin que leur premier album.

Mais malgré ces moments de doute, l’album reste étonnamment positif. Derrière les passages les plus durs, il y a toujours l’idée qu’il reste une étincelle quelque part. Même quand tout semble s’effondrer, il y a toujours une possibilité de repartir, de rallumer quelque chose et de recommencer autrement.

In the end, Still There’s A Glow really feels like the record of a band that grew up fast. Sweet Pill keeps the emotion and sincerity that made Where The Heart Is so compelling, but now with more ambitious songwriting and a real sense of collective effort behind every track.

If their first album helped them get noticed in the modern emo scene, this second one mainly shows that they still have a lot more to say. And that Sweet Pill are probably just getting started.

Au final, Still There’s A Glow ressemble beaucoup à l’album d’un groupe qui a grandi très vite. Sweet Pill garde l’émotion et la sincérité qui faisaient la force de Where The Heart Is, mais avec une écriture plus ambitieuse et un vrai travail collectif derrière chaque morceau.

Si leur premier disque leur a permis de se faire remarquer dans la scène emo moderne, ce deuxième album montre surtout qu’ils ont encore beaucoup de choses à dire. Et que Sweet Pill ne fait probablement que commencer.
