Spoiler alert: here’s a brief summary of the story : After a car chase ending in an accident (a story developed in Prologue… also in comic book form), Emile and Nancy steal a customer’s car from a restaurant before setting fire to the establishment and taking refuge in a hotel (the Disdain Hotel), which will serve as the setting for the album Red Carpet Disaster. In this album, we learn that Emile killed Nancy, who was filled with remorse, and that he will suffer the consequences with tracks expressing remorse, fits of rage, and suicidal thoughts, all set against a backdrop of high-quality, 2000s-style post-hardcore emo.

Of course, this is a very brief summary, but it’s a very convoluted universe about which we still know very little… The release of this new album should, however, unveil many mysteries, such as those surrounding the teased videos and the video games released since 2025. We’ll finally learn what this strange Black Orchid organization is, what this hotel is truly hiding (rumors suggest a laboratory that manufactures clones), and who the twin sisters we see in the music videos and on the album cover are, named Maeve and Sarah (not to mention the tentacles glimpsed here and there…).

Spoiler alert, je résume brièvement l’histoire : Après une course-poursuite se terminant par un accident (histoire développée dans Prologue… également sous la forme d’une bande dessinée), Emile et Nancy finissent par voler la voiture d’un client dans un restaurant avant d’y mettre le feu à l’établissement et de se réfugier dans un hôtel (l’hôtel Disdain) qui sera le cadre de l’album Red Carpet Disaster. Dans celui-ci, on apprendra qu’Emile a tué Nancy pleine de remords, et qu’il en subira les conséquences avec des titres exprimant le remords, les crises de colère et les envies suicidaires, le tout toujours sur fond d’emo post-hardcore version 2000 de grande qualité.

Bien sûr, je fais ici un résumé plus que sommaire, mais c’est un univers très alambiqué dont nous ne savons pas grand-chose encore… La sortie de ce nouvel album devrait toutefois dévoiler bon nombre de mystères, comme ceux des vidéos teasées et de ces jeux vidéo sortis depuis 2025. On saura enfin quelle est cette étrange organisation Black Orchid, que cache véritablement cet hôtel (on parle d’un laboratoire qui fabriquerait des clones) et qui sont ces jumelles que l’on aperçoit dans les clips et la couverture de l’album dont les noms sont Maeve et Sarah (sans parler des tentacules aperçus ci et là…).

As for the story, this new album picks up where Red Carpet Disaster left off, which makes sense since it echoes the album’s final words: “Too close to being free, why would I stop now?” The intro, “Lose the Rain“, reignites questions about who Emile is and his true purpose, but for the rest, the album focuses on the twins, who are believed to be artificial beings created in a quest to find the perfect human. I won’t elaborate further; I’ll leave you to ponder this further by joining the band’s Discord server, where speculation runs rampant. But now, let’s get to the music.

Côté histoire, ce nouvel album démarre là où en était Red Carpet Disaster, on le comprend car il reprend les derniers mots de l’album « Too close to being free, why would I stop now? » dans l’intro lose the rain réanimant ainsi les interrogations sur qui est Emile et son véritable but, mais pour le reste, l’album développe plutôt le récit des jumelles dont on sait qu’elles seraient des êtres artificiels créés dans une quête de recherche de l’humain parfait. Je ne développerai pas plus, je vous laisse vous torturer l’esprit si l’envie vous en dit en rejoignant le discord du groupe où les spéculations vont bon train, mais maintenant place à la musique.

Musically, Injury Episode is a superb album that harks back to the post-hardcore emo of the 2000s, with a slight touch of nu metal/alternative metal. We obviously think of the Finch and Glassjaw collaboration, Finch especially musically with Tom Black’s emo guitar riffs (on lip critic or Treading in particular), and vocally Glassjaw as Olli Appleyard’s voice is reminiscent of Daryl Palumbo’s and as he shares this talent of switching from clean singing to screaming with disconcerting ease. A very well-balanced album that alternates between big emo singles like “Human Props“, “Questioning“, and “Lip Critic“, beautiful ballads reminiscent of My Chemical Romance such as “Adapter“, “…hospice“, “Adult Diamond“, and “Treading“, which closes the album (featuring excellent drumming from Sam Ogden), and more aggressive tracks like the collaboration with Underoath, “Nostalgia Kills” (which personally disappointed me), the very Glassjaw-esque “Male-bomb“, and “Classic.Death.Pose.”

Olli, with his masterful vocals, navigates the entire album, masterfully alternating between clean singing and screams, taking advantage of his microphone to settle numerous scores, particularly with journalists, photographers, unscrupulous producers (likely Roadrunner) and those who produce nothing original and only copy others, thanking them in passing for all the inspiration they provided for writing this album (the subject of “Dull Blade Disguise“). He offers a general critique of the mechanization of the music industry and the resulting homogenization of current bands producing this album in direct opposition to current trends, without using any tapes, recording the guitars without additional rhythm guitar takes, and employing a deliberately minimalist mix (by Erik Bickerstaffe of Loathe and Hunter and Hunter Young of Digital Ghost Audio) that leaves a raw, sometimes imperfect, recording feel. “What you hear is what you’ll experience live, we don’t cheat,” he seems to be telling us.

Musicalement, ce Injury Episode est un superbe album qui ramène tout droit à l’emo post-hardcore des années 2000, non sans une légère pointe de nu metal/alternative metal. On pense évidemment à la collaboration Finch et Glassjaw, Finch surtout musicalement avec les riffs emo de Tom Black à la guitare (sur lip critic ou Treading en particulier), et vocalement Glassjaw tant la voix d’Olli Appleyard fait penser à celle de Daryl Palumbo et tant il partage ce talent de passer du chant clair au scream avec une facilité déconcertante. Un album très équilibré qui alterne les gros singles emo comme human props, questioning ou lip critic, de belles ballades aux accents de My Chemical Romance avec Adapter, …hospice, Adult Diamond et Treading qui clôture l’album (avec d’excellentes parties de batterie de Sam Ogden) et des morceaux plus violents comme le feat avec Underoath Nostalgia Kills (qui personnellement m’a déçu), le très Glassjaw Male-bomb ou encore Classic.Death.Pose..

Olli, d’une voix de maître, se balade sur tout l’album, alternant magistralement le chant clair et le scream, profitant de tenir un micro pour régler de nombreux comptes, notamment avec les journalistes, les photographes, les producteurs peu scrupuleux, surement Roadrunner et ceux qui ne produisent rien d’original et ne font que les copier, les remerciant au passage pour toute l’inspiration qu’ils lui ont offerte pour écrire cet album (sujet de dull blade disguise). Il fait une critique générale de la machinisation de l’industrie musicale et de l’uniformisation des groupes actuels qui en résulte, eux qui ont produit cet album à l’inverse des tendances actuelles, sans utiliser la moindre bande, enregistré les guitares sans prises additionnelles de guitares rythmiques, et faisant un mixage volontairement minimaliste (par Erik Bickerstaffe de Loathe et Hunter et Hunter Young de Digital Ghost Audio) qui laisse ce sentiment d’un enregistrement brut qui semble parfois imparfait. Ce que vous entendez et ce que vous aurez sur scène, nous ne trichons pas, nous, semble-t-il nous dire…

Static Dress, with Injury Episode, plunges us back into the mysterious Hotel Disdain, using this universe to explore numerous other art forms with brilliance and inventiveness, keeping fans on the edge of their seats not only for the music but also for the story it unfolds. A superb and very varied album that evokes the 2000s, even down to the recording quality, which unfortunately recalls some truly awful downloads from that era on Limewire or eMule for certain songs… Because of this, I had a lot of trouble really getting into the album, but once I did, what a joy it was…

Static Dress avec Injury Episode nous replonge dans ce mystérieux hôtel Disdain, se servant de cet univers pour explorer une fois encore de nombreuses autres formes artistiques avec brio et inventivité, mettant le fan toujours plus en haleine non seulement pour la musique mais aussi pour l’histoire qu’elle développe.   Un superbe album très varié qui sent bon les années 2000, même jusqu’à la qualité de l’enregistrement qui rappelle malheureusement certains téléchargements bien pourris de l’époque sur Limewire ou eMule sur certaines chansons… J’ai à cause de cela eu beaucoup de mal à véritablement rentrer dans l’album, mais une fois que ce fut fait, quel bonheur j’ai pris…
