The Ukrainian band Space of Variations finally unveils their third album, Poisoned Art, four years after Imago, their second on Napalm Records. They took their time, the geopolitical context of course, but above all, the desire to do things right, given how difficult it is for a current metalcore band to reinvent itself from album to album, and how much it seems like everything has already been explored in this genre… See While she sleeps, the English group has indeed just announced a break from touring in order to take a step back and rethink their songwriting process, proof that standing out from the crowd has become difficult but essential these days, especially with the arrival of AI competition…

Les Ukrainiens de Space of Variations dévoilent enfin, quatre ans après Imago, leur troisième album, Poisoned Art, le deuxième chez Napalm Records.  Ils auront mis le temps, le contexte géopolitique bien sûr, mais l’envie de bien faire surtout tant il est difficile pour un groupe de metalcore actuel de se renouveler d’album en album et tant on a l’impression que tout semble déjà avoir été exploré dans ce genre… Il n’y a qu’à voir. While she sleeps, le groupe anglais vient en effet d’annoncer une pause au niveau des tournées afin de prendre du recul et de revoir leur façon de composer, preuve que se démarquer actuellement pour ne pas être noyé dans la masse est devenu difficile mais indispensable, surtout face à l’arrivée de la concurrence de l’IA…

Space of Variations hasn’t exactly deprived us of music for the past four years either, as tracks like Lies, Doppelganger, and Tribe, which opens the album, were released between 2024 and early 2025. Tribe is reminiscent of one of their early hits, Tibet, released in 2017, with tribal sounds and bouncy riffs reminiscent of Soulfly or Ill Niño, two tracks that, live, are sure to get the crowd pumping, but which don’t quite reflect what this new album is. Tracks like Halo or Mayday better summarize the evolution of the group which, riding on Imago, continues this constant alternation in their songs between violent passages and sung passages, an ever more advanced journey into the space of metalcore variations with these two singers, like cosmonauts, who explore ever more the most remote corners of the genre and redefine its limits from album to album. Dima Kozhuhar visits the darkest and most violent planets of this universe with his great monstrous voice, well accompanied by his companions Tima Kasatkin on drums and Anton Kasatkin on bass who line up Breakdowns upon breakdowns as on Mayday, Parallel realities or Godlike (almost in every songs in fact) while his alter ego, Alex Zatserkovnyi (also guitarist of the group), travels in spheres of much less gravity made of much lighter electro nu metal melodies, sometimes very mainstream or even electro pop which recall, in these passages, the evolution of The Devil Wears Prada as on Lies or Parallel realities or TSS on Tribe, always going further as when he approaches the borders of eurodance on Ghost Town which one could almost believe came straight from a collab between Ten 56 and Electric Callboy. These two space travelers, each at opposite ends of the spectrum, never cross paths; you never even hear them at the same time. Poisoned Art gives the impression of hearing the content of their communications from one end to the other of the metalcore universe, exchanges that are sometimes reassuring and soothing, but often alarming, as on “Mayday” or “Back to Dirt” with its unsettling dubstep sounds.

Space of Variations ne nous a pas non plus sevrés de musiques depuis quatre ans car Lies, Doppelganger ou encore Tribe, qui démarre l’album, sont sorties entre 2024 et début 2025. Tribe rappelle un de leurs premiers succès, Tibet, sorti en 2017 avec des sonorités tribales et des riffs bien jumpants à la Soulfly ou à la Ill Niño, deux morceaux qui, en live, doivent faire péter le cardio mais qui toutefois ne reflètent pas ce qu’est ce nouvel album. Des morceaux comme Halo ou Mayday résument plus l’évolution du groupe qui, surfant sur Imago, continue cette alternance constante dans leurs morceaux entre passages violents et passages chantés, un voyage toujours plus poussé dans l’espace des variations du metalcore avec ces deux chanteurs, tels des cosmonautes, qui explorent toujours plus les recoins les plus reculés du genre et en redéfinissent les limites d’album en album. Dima Kozhuar visite les planètes les plus sombres et violentes de cet univers aux moyens de sa voix monstrueuse, bien accompagné  de ces compagnons Tima Kasatkin à la batterie et Anton Kasatkin à la basse qui alignent Breakdowns sur breakdowns comme sur sur Mayday, Parallel realities ou Godlike (il y en a partout en fait) tandis que son alter ego, Alex Zatserkovny (également guitariste du groupe), voyage lui dans des sphères à la gravité bien moins importante faites de mélodies electro nu metal beaucoup plus légères, parfois très mainstream voir même electro pop qui rappellent, sur ces passages-là, l’évolution de The Devil Wears Prada comme sur Lies ou Parallel realities ou TSS sur Tribe, allant toujours plus loin, lui-aussi, comme lorsqu’il approche des frontières de l’eurodance sur Ghost Town qu’on pourrait presque croire tout droit sortie d’une collab entre Ten 56 et Electric Callboy.  Ces deux voyageurs de l’espace, chacun aux antipodes l’un de l’autre, ne se croisent jamais, on ne les entend même jamais en même temps. Poisoned Art donne l’impression d’entendre le contenu de leurs communications d’un bout à l’autre de l’univers du metalcore, des échanges parfois rassurants et apaisants, mais souvent alarmistes comme sur Mayday ou sur Back to Dirt et ses sons dubstep inquiétants.

The album is a condensed version of everything currently happening in metalcore, ranging from the softest to the most extreme aspects of the genre, with a sometimes surprising alternation in intensity within the tracks themselves, as they swing from one extreme to the other. But each track is a potential banger, as both singers are monsters in their respective styles. So yes, purists of extreme metalcore will surely sometimes be thrown off by the sheer number of contrast, metalcore passages followed by nu-metal sections that are quite pop-oriente, and fans of mainstream clean vocals will be equally taken aback by the sheer number of heavy breakdowns. But Space of Variations has such mastery over pacing their songs that they always manage to stay on course and never lose anyone along the way, regardless of their metalcore sensibilities. With Poisoned Art, the Ukrainians offer us a kind of universal metalcore that unites and brings everyone together, and whose message, for a band hailing from a country that has been attacked and scarred, carries even more weight and humanist values, knowing what they’ve been through…

L’album est un condensé de tout ce qui se fait actuellement en metalcore allant du côté le plus soft au plus extrême du genre, avec une alternance parfois surprenante dans la différence d’intensité à l’intérieur même des morceaux tant on passe d’un extrême à un autre. Mais chaque titre est un banger en puissance tant les deux chanteurs sont des monstres chacun dans leur style. Alors oui, les puristes du metalcore extrême seront surement parfois perturbés face à tant de grands écarts, passages metalcore/passages nu metal assez pop, et les fans de voix claires mainstream tout autant par tant de breakdowns qui bastonnent, mais Space of Variations a une telle maitrise pour doser ses morceaux qu’ils réussissent toujours à garder le cap et à ne perdre jamais personne en route et cela quelle que soit leur sensibilité metalcorienne. Les Ukrainiens nous proposent avec Poisoned Art une sorte de metalcore universel qui unit et rassemble tout le monde et dont le message, pour un groupe venant pourtant d’un pays agressé et meurtri, prend encore plus de poids et de valeurs humanistes, sachant ce qu’ils traversent…
