The emo wave is back:

Band from the 2000s MySpace emo generation, made famous with the 2006 hit Face Down, the Floridians of Red Jumpsuit Apparatus are back seven years after their last album, The Awakening. Taking advantage of the current vintage emo trend, they release in a perfect timing X’s For Eyes, an album packed with emo pop punk/post-hardcore references that will delight the old emo dark hair with red streaks fans now in their forties, but not only…

It’s a fact: emo is everywhere right now, with many bands returning to the forefront (Thrusday, Underoath, Silverstien, who are touring back in France) or even reforming (My Chemical Romance, The Starting Line, and Motion City Soundtrack). The 2000s teenager, now the housewife under 50, is now a target for record labels. With the family wallet in hand, the emo boy/girl now has money and no longer goes to Limewire or Emule. They can now spend money on merch, pay for festivals in Las Vegas (When We Were Young Festival) or Slamdunk in Europe, and even take cruises like Emo’s Not Dead Cruises, similar to those « Age tendre and tête de bois » cruises in France. Emo is popular, and the labels have understood this, and we’re not displeased.

La vague emo de retour :

Groupe de la génération Emo sur mySpace des années 2000 avec notamment le tube Face Down de 2006, les floridiens de Red Jumpsuit Apparatus reviennent 7 ans après leur dernier album The Awakening. Bénéficiant du courant vintage émo actuel, ils profitent de ce parfait timing pour sortir X’s For Eyes, un album bourré de références emo pop punk/ post-hardcore qui ravira les anciens fans à mèches noires désormais quadragénaire mais pas que…

C’est un constat, l’emo est partout en ce moment, de nombreux groupes reviennent sur le devant de la scène (Thrusday, underoath, silverstien qui retournent en France) ou même se reforment (My Chemical Romance, The Starting Line ou encore Motion City soundtrack).  L’adolescent des années 2000, désormais devenu la ménagère de moins de 50ans, est maintenant la cible des maisons de disques. Détendeur du portefeuille famillial, l’emo boy/girl a désormais de l’argent et ne va plus sur limewire ou emule, il peut désormais se faire plaisir au merch, se payer des festivals à Las Vegas (When we Were Young Festival) ou le Slamdunk en Europe et même faire des croisières comme les Emo’s Not Dead Cruises à la manière de celles de Age tendre et tête de bois. L’emo a la côte et les labels l’ont bien compris et ce n’est pas pour nous déplaire.

The band still successfully applies the pop punk and emo formula, sometimes with a touch of screaming (thanks in particular to the guest appearances of Kellin Quinn of Sleeping With Sirens on Always the King, Craig Mabbit of Escape the Fate on Worth It, and Randy Winter (the singer’s brother) on some back vocals). It brings to mind bands like New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy or Simple Plan on songs such as Twenty Hour, Perfection or on Purple, a great song talking about autism (the singer’s son, Ronnie Winter, is autistic).

X’s for Eyes is a very complete album that covers a wide range of emo styles. Listening to it, you’ll never get bored. Emo pop punk mostly, but also a few surprises, like the Finch vibe (pop punk version) on “Home Improvement” or “Kins and Caroll”, some My Chemical Romance reminiscences on « Bad Bea »t and « X’s for Eyes » or even a bit of nu metal on the big single “Sleeping Through (No King)”, an anti-Trump song (a featuring with with Amy Lee from Evanescence would be great on it by the way).

Le groupe applique toujours avec succès la recette pop punk et emo avec parfois un peu de scream (grâce notamment aux featurings de Kellin Quinn de Sleeping With Sirens sur Always the king, de Craig Mabbit de Escape the Fate sur Worth it et de Randy Winter (le frère du chanteur) sur quelques back vocals), on pense à New Found Glory, Good Charlotte, Fall Out Boy ou Simple Plan sur Purple Halo, chanson qui aborde le thème de l’autisme (le fils de Ronnie Winter, le chanteur est autiste), Twenty hour ou Perfection mais avec une touche plus emo tout de même.

 X’s for eyes est un album très complet qui ratisse large niveau emo. A son écoute, on ne s’ennuie jamais. Emo pop punk donc mais quelques surprises aussi comme ce petit côté Finch (version pop punk) sur Home improvement ou Kins and Caroll ou bien encore un peu de nu metal sur le gros single Sleeping through (no king) chanson anti-trump où on imaginerait très bien Amy Lee d’Evanescence en featuring. Bad beat et X’s for Eyes, plus emo rappeleront, elles, un peu My chemical Romance.

X’s for Eyes plays a string of emo pop-punk hits with a tiny touch of post-hardcore (we would have liked a little more screaming). It will appeal to all millennials and their children. Its name, « X’s for eyes » is the often cartoonish representation of death or someone close to death, with the character having crosses instead of eyes. The band wants to warn young people about their actions and inactions that would lead to them or others putting crosses over their eyes… Openly anti-Trump, which earned him some sulphurous exchanges with a certain Ronnie Radke of Falling in Reverse, Ronnie Winter worries about the future of his country, even questioning his faith regarding what is happening to immigrants and minorities “this god who only tolerates whites and heterosexuals is not mine” he declared recently. An album and a voice that does good in this complicated period in the United States.

X’s for eyes enchaine les tubes emo pop-punk avec une toute petite touche de post-hardcore (on aurait aimé un peu plus de cris). Il plaira à tous les millenials et à leurs enfants. Son nom : des croix pour les yeux en français est la représentation souvent cartoonesque de la mort ou de quelqu’un proche de la mort, le personnage a alors des croix à la place des yeux. Le groupe veut mettre en garde la jeunesse face à leurs actions et inactions qui mèneraient à ce qu’eux-mêmes ou d’autres personnes leur mettent des croix sur les yeux… Ouvertement anti-trump, ce qui lui a value des échanges sulfureux avec un certain Ronnie Radke de Falling in Reverse,  Ronnie winter s’inquiète de l’avenir pour son pays remettant même en cause sa foi face au traitement des immigrès et des minorités « ce dieu qui ne tolère que les blancs et les hétéros n’est pas le mien » a-t-il déclaré récemment. Un album et une voix qui fait du donc du bien dans cette période compliquée aux Etats-Unis.
