Honestly? I wasn’t expecting much. After Negative Spaces, I figured it was either gonna feel like more of the same, or some overly conceptual thing that never really clicks. And then… yeah. It hit way harder than I thought.

Right off the bat, “Dying To Forget” is easily one of the album’s biggest standouts. It’s heavy in all the right ways, it grabs you by the throat, and that mix of pure rage and melody just sticks in your head. Same goes for “Empty Hands”, the title track, super effective, insanely tense, with a real sense of build and payoff. It’s the kind of song that makes you go, okay, yeah, she’s absolutely in her zone.

“Eat The Hate” deserves its moment too. It’s sharp, a little cocky, almost fun in how nasty it is. Poppy talking her shit without taking herself too seriously just always works. And then there’s “If We’re Following The Light”, which is more atmospheric and emotionally heavy, but really well done. It breathes, it grooves, and it proves the album knows when to pull back instead of going full throttle all the time.

Franchement ? J’en attendais pas grand-chose. Après Negative Spaces, je me disais que ça allait être soit la redite, soit un délire trop conceptuel pour vraiment accrocher. Et au final… bonne claque.

Déjà, “Dying To Forget”, c’est clairement un des gros points forts du disque. C’est violent comme il faut, ça te prend à la gorge, et t’as ce mélange de rage et de mélodie qui te reste dans le crâne. Pareil pour “Empty Hands”, le titre éponyme : hyper efficace, ultra tendu, avec une vraie montée en puissance. C’est le genre de morceau qui te fait dire ok, elle est vraiment dans son élément.

“Eat The Hate” aussi mérite son moment de gloire. C’est mordant, un peu insolent, presque fun dans sa méchanceté. Poppy qui crache sans se prendre trop au sérieux, ça marche toujours. Et puis “If We’re Following The Light”, plus atmosphérique, plus lourd émotionnellement, mais super bien foutu. Ça respire, ça groove, et ça montre que l’album sait lever le pied quand il faut.

Overall, Empty Hands is a really easy listen from start to finish. It’s rich, it messes with a lot of boundaries between metal, industrial, and more accessible melodies, without ever becoming annoying or try-hard. There’s a real sense of cohesion, even when the album goes in a bunch of different directions. And most importantly: it’s never a tough listen, which is honestly not a given with this kind of record.

Quick side note on Jordan Fish: yeah, he’s everywhere, yeah, his name keeps popping up. Personally, I kinda think he’d be better off focusing on his own solo album instead of sticking his hands into every project out there. It works here, for sure, but every now and then you still wish Poppy had even more room to fully take the reins.

Dans l’ensemble, Empty Hands s’écoute super bien du début à la fin. C’est riche, ça bouscule pas mal de codes entre metal, indus et mélodies plus accessibles, sans jamais devenir pénible ou prétentieux. Y’a une vraie cohérence, même quand ça part dans tous les sens. Et surtout : c’est pas désagréable une seule seconde, ce qui est loin d’être gagné sur ce genre de disque.

Petit aparté sur Jordan Fish : oui, il est partout, oui, son nom revient sans arrêt. Perso, j’en pense surtout qu’il ferait mieux de se concentrer sur son propre album solo au lieu de mettre les mains dans tous les projets possibles. Ici, ça passe, mais parfois t’as quand même envie que Poppy prenne encore plus le contrôle.

Bottom line: Empty Hands is a really great surprise. It’s not an album that plays games, it’s honest, powerful, and genuinely fun to listen to, and it shows an artist who’s constantly moving forward. At this point, I’m genuinely excited to see how these songs translate live, because they clearly have the potential to hit hard on stage.

And Poppy just keeps doing her thing, carving out her own path, without asking anyone for permission.

Bref, Empty Hands est une très bonne surprise C’est pas un album qui triche : il est sincère, puissant, et franchement très plaisant à écouter. et qui montre une artiste toujours en mouvement. Maintenant, j’ai vraiment hâte de voir ce que ça va donner en live, parce que ces morceaux-là ont clairement le potentiel de faire très mal sur scène.

Verdict final : 4/5 milkshakes bien mérités
Et Poppy continue tranquillement de tracer sa route, sans demander la permission.
