The Swedish rock band Normandie returns with Dopamine, the follow-up to their 2021 album Dark & Beautiful Secrets. Their sound is a slick mix of synth rock, alternative rock, pop, and just the right sprinkle of metalcore to kick it up a notch.

From the very first notes, the tone is set. If every track follows the lead of “Overdrive,” we’re in good hands. The song shines through its masterful balance of screamed and clean vocals. Dès les premières notes le ton est donné. Si toutes les chansons suivent le chemin d’Overdrive nous sommes entre de bonnes mains. Le morceau brille par sa gestion du contraste entre chant crié et chant clair. L’explosion du refrain est un moment-clé, porté par un mur de guitares et des cymbales crash déchaînées. Une véritable claque émotionnelle.

The atmosphere turns dark, almost eerie, and that’s pushed even further in the next track, Flowers from The Grave. The bass takes center stage in songs like Blood In The Water and Butterflies, and we’re here for it. In Blood In The Water, the moments just before the chorus feel glorious, like a perfectly timed launchpad into a punchy breakdown and a chorus that hits hard. The tension is sharp and deliberate. Meanwhile, Butterflies is insanely danceable. It blends groove and attitude without ever letting go of its rock roots.

The real gems of the album? Hourglass and Colorblind. Hourglass brings a hint of classic Normandie vibes, with a killer feature from Dani of Bury Tomorrow. The drumming is spot-on, and a surprise acoustic guitar in the final chorus adds extra depth. It’s a powerhouse of a track. Then there’s Colorblind, clearly made for the stage. From the first notes, you can’t help but bounce, jump, and lose your mind in the pit. The chorus is explosive, and the bridge delivers a raw, joyful kind of aggression that reminds us exactly why we love this genre.

L’atmosphère est dark, presque étrange et cela est exacerbé dans le prochain titre Flowers from The Grave. La basse est mise en avant dans des chansons comme Blood In The Water et Butterflies pour notre plus grand plaisir. Dans Blood In The Water les quelques instants avant le refrain sont glorieux, agissant comme une rampe de lancement pour un break et un refrain qui claquent avec justesse. Une tension savamment dosée. Alors que Butterflies est incroyablement dansante. Butterflies parvient à mêler groove et attitude sans jamais perdre son ancrage rock.

Les deux pépites de ce projet sont Hourglass et Colorblind. Hourglass nous donne un petit du Normandie d’antan avec en prime l’incroyable Dani de Bury Tomorrow. La batterie y est irréprochable, et une guitare acoustique surprise vient enrichir le dernier refrain. C’est un son puissant. Et Colorblind est destinée à être jouée en live. Dès les premières notes nous avons envie de rebondir sur place, de sauter partout en mettant le chaos dans la fosse. Le refrain tape fort, et le bridge, d’une violence jubilatoire, nous rappelle pourquoi on aime ce genre d’énergie brute.

All in all, this journey into Normandie’s world is a satisfying one. The sound here is more polished, smoother, and leans a bit more pop than their previous work, yet it still carves out a strong spot in their discography. Set in a not-so-distant future, this album hits the mark… and gives us just the dopamine boost we needed.

Le son, ici, est plus raffiné, plus lisse et un tantinet plus pop que son prédécesseur mais arrive quand même à se faire une place de choix dans la discographie du groupe. Se déroulant dans un futur très proche, l’album arrive à convaincre et nous donne un petit coup de dopamine.
