Lorde has been through a lot since her arrival in the public eye with the legendary first album Pure Heroine in 2013, followed by the acclaimed Melodrama and the third album Solar Power. Maybe Lorde has taken note of the miss of Solar Power and it’s why this next opus ( Virgin) borrows heavily from Melodrama with the vulnerability of Pure Heroine.

This album is raw, deep, filled with authenticity and transparency, the production -lacking Jack Antonoff this time – is stellar, the lyrics are straight to the point which makes this opus feel real.

Lorde a vécu beaucoup de choses depuis son arrivée sous les projecteurs avec son légendaire premier album Pure Heroine en 2013, suivi de l’acclamé Melodrama et de son troisième album Solar Power. Peut-être que Lorde a pris conscience du relatif échec de Solar Power, et c’est pourquoi ce nouvel opus (Virgin) s’inspire fortement de Melodrama tout en retrouvant la vulnérabilité de Pure Heroine.

Cet album est brut, profond, empreint d’authenticité et de transparence. La production , sans Jack Antonoff cette fois, est remarquable, et les paroles vont droit au but, ce qui rend cet opus vrai.

The album starts with Hammer an ode to the city and horniness, the production is impeccable. It starts with almost nothing musically the piano enters and then after Lorde said “I might have been born” again the chorus arrives and there’s a feeling of freedom characterized by the explosive chorus and the belting notes.

Then the lead single What Was That explores the aftermath of a breakup. This is the most melodrama song evoking party girl Lorde merging MDMA with love “MDMA in the back garden, we kiss for hours straight”

In Shapeshifter and Man Of The Year, Lorde explores her identity. While Shapeshifter deals with who she is sexually shapeshifting through many status “I’ve been the ice, i’ve been the flame. I’ve been the prize, the ball the chain”, Man Of The Year deals with who she is regarding her gender in such a clever way.

We explore so many different themes throughout the album : parent/daughter relationship, gender identity, eating disorder, horniness, heartbreak…

L’album s’ouvre avec Hammer, une ode à la ville et au désir. La production est impeccable. Il commence presque sans musique, le piano entre en jeu, puis après que Lorde ait dit « I might have been born », le refrain explose, apportant un sentiment de liberté caractérisé par l’intensité du refrain et les voix puissantes.

Ensuite, le single principal What Was That explore les conséquences d’une rupture. C’est la chanson la plus proche de Melodrama, évoquant la Lorde fêtarde mêlant MDMA et amour : « MDMA in the back garden, we kiss for hours straight ».

Dans Shapeshifter et Man Of The Year Lorde, explore son identité. Tandis que Shapeshifter parle de qui elle est sexuellement en se métamorphosant sous plusieurs status : “I’ve been the ice, i’ve been the flame. I’ve been the prize, the ball the chain”, Man Of The Year aborde intelligemment sa relation au genre.

On explore une grande variété de thèmes à travers l’album avec transparence : la relation parent/fille, l’identité de genre, les troubles alimentaires, le désir, les ruptures, le chagrin amoureux etc…

This song is beautiful. The beginning feels like a religious experience, there’s a sense of grandeur that gets bigger and bigger during the song and stops right before the outro.

Current Affairs

This song is simple but effective. It is a romantic song, a reflection on blossoming love and past ones. There’s a palpable vulnerability to it that we love, the repeating guitar chord and the bass are the only instruments heard here. Everything is stripped back, even the vocals are intimate.

Broken Glass

We’re propelled into the hard self-hatred Lorde experienced with her years-long eating disorder. Her image of herself is just broken glass.

Cette chanson est magnifique. Le début donne l’impression d’une expérience religieuse, avec un sentiment de grandeur qui monte progressivement tout au long du morceau, jusqu’à s’arrêter juste avant l’outro.

Current Affairs

Cette chanson est simple mais efficace. C’est une chanson romantique, une réflexion sur un amour naissant et les amours passés. On y ressent une vulnérabilité palpable, que l’on adore. Les seuls instruments sont une guitare aux accords répétés et une ligne de basse. Tout est épuré, même la voix est intime.

Broken Glass

On est propulsé dans la haine de soi intense que Lorde a vécue avec ses années de troubles alimentaires. Son image d’elle-même n’est que verre brisé.

After four years of wait Lorde is finally back with an album mixing Melodrama (with its sharp production) and Pure Heroine. Even though the album deals with deep and personal themes musically it is sharp with lots of electronics that chatter, wobble, and burst into huge choruses. Lorde is as transparent as an X-Ray in this opus.

Après quatre années d’attente, Lorde est enfin de retour avec un album qui mélange Melodrama (avec sa production tranchante) et Pure Heroine( avec sa vulnérabilité). Même si l’album aborde des thèmes profonds et personnels, musicalement, il est percutant, rempli d’éléments électroniques qui crépitent, vacillent, et explosent en refrains puissants. Lorde est aussi transparente que la radiographie de sa pochette d’album dans cet opus.
