From the opening moments, A Stranger to You makes its intentions crystal clear. Crushing guitar work collides with shimmering electronics, atmospheric passages, shoegaze textures, industrial flourishes, and a handful of genuinely unexpected detours. Every track feels like it’s exploring new ground while still sounding unmistakably like Loathe. That ability to shift effortlessly from bone-crushing heaviness to near-weightless vulnerability remains one of the band’s greatest strengths.

Tracks like “Block of Flats,” “Fortress Down,” “Gemini,” and “Revenant” perfectly showcase that balance. The riffs hit just as hard as fans would expect, but they’re constantly offset by spacious, melodic passages and more understated arrangements. “Harder to Pretend” stands out with its electronic edge, while “The Ladder” reveals one of Loathe’s most intimate sides through an acoustic ballad that’s as understated as it is emotionally affecting.

What truly elevates the album, however, is its songwriting. Despite drawing from an impressively broad palette of influences, Loathe never sound like they’re throwing ideas together for the sake of being experimental. Guest appearances from Bucki Sugar, Olli Appleyard, NOWHERE2RUN, and Jordan Rakei add new dimensions to the record without ever overshadowing the band’s own identity. It’s the clearest sign yet of a creative evolution that’s been unfolding for years, now realized with a new level of confidence and maturity.

Les riffs y sont toujours aussi imposants, mais ils sont régulièrement interrompus par des respirations aériennes ou des arrangements plus subtils. “Harder to Pretend” surprend par son approche plus électronique, tandis que “The Ladder” dévoile un visage particulièrement vulnérable du groupe avec une ballade acoustique aussi simple qu’émouvante.

L’album impressionne surtout par son écriture. Malgré une grande variété d’influences, Loathe ne donne jamais l’impression d’empiler les idées gratuitement. That said, A Stranger to You isn’t without its flaws. In its constant drive to keep listeners guessing, a few songs undercut their own momentum with abrupt transitions and sharp stylistic pivots that don’t always feel fully earned. At times, certain ideas seem designed more to catch the listener off guard than to serve the natural flow of the songwriting. The production is likely to divide opinion as well. Dense, gritty, and intentionally abrasive, it gives the album’s heaviest moments tremendous impact, but it can also bury some of the finer details in the process.

Even so, those shortcomings do little to diminish the album’s appeal. A Stranger to You remains a compelling listen from start to finish, striking a rare balance between artistic ambition and genuine accessibility. Loathe have crafted a record that speaks just as strongly to fans of extreme metal as it does to listeners drawn to shoegaze, alternative rock, or atmospheric music. Few bands today move so effortlessly between crushing heaviness, memorable melodies, and fearless experimentation.

À vouloir constamment surprendre, certains morceaux cassent parfois leur propre élan avec des transitions abruptes ou des changements de direction qui peuvent désorienter. Quelques idées semblent davantage pensées pour provoquer l’effet de surprise que pour servir naturellement la progression des compositions. La production divisera également : dense, saturée et volontairement abrasive, elle accentue la puissance des passages les plus lourds mais peut aussi rendre certains détails plus difficiles à distinguer.

Ces réserves n’empêchent pourtant jamais A Stranger to You de fasciner. Loathe réussit à construire un disque exigeant sans devenir inaccessible, capable de séduire aussi bien les amateurs de metal extrême que ceux attirés par des sonorités plus alternatives ou atmosphériques. Peu de groupes actuels parviennent à faire cohabiter avec autant de naturel brutalité, mélodie et expérimentation.
