We had missed that violin. Following the success of The Black and its repackaged edition, Swedish metal band Imminence returns with their sixth album, Axis Mundi. The title symbolically refers to the axis connecting Earth and Heaven, already hinting at an album centered around an inner quest, suspended between life and death.

Imminence offer a melodic and atmospheric universe, with one element that sets them apart from the modern metal scene : Eddie Berg, the singer, always has his violin in hand, on which he has no hesitation in unleashing his best screams. Harald Barret, meanwhile, is not a guitarist like the others: he often swaps his pick for a bow. Accompanied by Alex Arnoldsson on guitar and Christian Höijer on bass, they offer us music that is both beautiful and brutal.

Peter Hanström, former drummer of Imminence, left the adventure in 2025, after 14 great years alongside the band.

Choosing how to open an album is not an easy task : Twisting In The Wind serves as the calm before the storm. The atmosphere is subdued ; now is the time to breathe. Eddie warms up his voice and gets ready for the fight. Because yes, Axis Mundi is set in a medieval and mythological aesthetic that we will experience throughout the album. The scene is set from the very first notes. The epic begins.

Several singles have already been revealed to the public, including The Sword That Never Bends, which already announces that the party is over. The tone is set from the very first seconds: we are at the heart of the battle.

The song is very theatrical, with rather brutal verses that contrast with a more melodic and dramatic chorus. Eddie switches from clean vocals to explosive screams from one second to the next. After a very melodic violin passage that brings the tension back down, the song explodes into a violent breakdown.

Ce violon nous avait manqué. Après le succès de The Black et de son repackage, le groupe suédois de métal Imminence revient avec son sixième album Axis Mundi. Ce titre désigne symboliquement l’axe reliant la Terre au Ciel et annonce déjà un album placé sous le signe de la quête intérieure, suspendue entre la vie et la mort.

Imminence propose un univers mélodique et atmosphérique, avec un élément qui le démarque de la scène métal moderne : Eddie Berg, le chanteur, a toujours son violon à la main, sur lequel il n’hésite pas à lâcher ses plus beaux screams. Harald Barret, lui, n’est pas un guitariste comme les autres : il troque souvent son médiator contre un archet. Accompagnés d’Alex Arnoldsson à la guitare et de Christian Höijer à la basse, ils nous proposent une musique à la fois belle et brutale.

Peter Hanström, ancien batteur d’Imminence, a quitté l’aventure en 2025, après 14 belles années aux côtés du groupe.

Choisir comment ouvrir un album n’est pas chose simple : Twisting In The Wind fait office de calme avant la tempête. L’ambiance est posée, c’est maintenant qu’il faut respirer. Eddie chauffe sa voix et se prépare pour la bagarre. Car oui, Axis Mundi se place dans une esthétique médiévale et mythologique dans laquelle nous allons évoluer tout au long de l’album. Le décor est planté dès les premières notes. L’épopée commence.

Plusieurs singles ont déjà été révélés au public, dont The Sword That Never Bends, qui annonce déjà que la fête est finie. Le ton est donné dès les premières secondes, nous sommes au cœur de la bataille.

La chanson est très théâtrale, avec des couplets plutôt brutaux qui contrastent avec un refrain plus mélodique et dramatique. Eddie passe d’un chant clair à des screams explosifs d’une seconde à l’autre. Après un passage de violon très mélodieux qui vient faire redescendre la tension, la chanson explose finalement dans un violent breakdown.

The music video fits perfectly into this epic and medieval universe, ruthless and bloody.

Devil May Try follows perfectly. The structure comes with no surprise, alternating between verses punctuated by Eddie’s piercing screams and a more restrained chorus accompanied by the violin.

Crestfallen, a much softer track, provides a counterbalance and gives the violin much more room, much to our delight. It is hard not to be carried away by these melodies, imagining a dramatic battle between two knights as we become immersed in it. Eddie’s violin brings a majestic and melancholic dimension to the song.

We needed some softness before plunging into the brutality of False Light. The aesthetic of the music video is the same as that of its elder sister, The Sword That Never Bends. Except that, between a delicate violin and powerful guitar riffs, our knight loses his feathers, wavering between hope and despair as Eddie’s vocals and screams unfold.

Le clip vidéo se place parfaitement dans cet univers épique et médiéval, impitoyable et sanglant.

Devil May Try prend parfaitement la suite. La construction est sans surprise, avec une alternance entre des couplets ponctués par les cris déchirants d’Eddie, et un refrain plus contenu, accompagné du violon.

Crestfallen, un son beaucoup plus doux, vient contrebalancer et laisser beaucoup plus de place au violon, pour notre plus grand plaisir. Difficile de ne pas se laisser porter par ces mélodies en imaginant un combat dramatique entre deux chevaliers lorsque nous y sommes plongés. Le violon d’Eddie y apporte une dimension majestueuse et mélancolique.

De la douceur, il nous en fallait avant de nous plonger dans la brutalité de False Light. L’esthétique du clip vidéo est la même que celle de sa grande sœur The Sword That Never Bends. Sauf qu’entre un violon délicat et des riffs de guitare puissants, notre chevalier y perd ses plumes, oscillant entre espoir et désespoir au fil des chants et screams d’Eddie.

Another change of atmosphere comes with If Not Now, When, where we find our broken knight once again. He finds hope again. It is an invitation to stop waiting and to get back on his path. The vulnerability of the lyrics contrasts with the power of the song, which manages to remain magical until the very end, before calming down with a few piano notes alongside Eddie’s violin. Our knight finally finds a bit of light again. To make the connection with the album title, Axis Mundi, he seems to be reaching the end of his journey towards Heaven.

With Didn’t Think About You (Lately), the album’s second ballad, we move away from the atmosphere established so far. It stands apart from the violincore sounds the band has accustomed us to. Has an intruder somehow slipped into the album? At first, it is difficult to place it within our knightly epic.

Then comes Leviathan. Already a third ballad? That is what we might think during the first few dozen of seconds, before Eddie brings us back to reality. This is a battlefield, and we are launched back into it with the powerful guitar riffs of Harald and Alex, soon joined by Eddie’s piercing screams. The Leviathan comes to shatter the calm that seemed to have settled in. A new monster stands in front of our hero, who is not yet at the end of his journey.

Almost out of breath, the album offers us Shed Your Skin and Power Divine, with a more restrained power. Both tracks remain within this same cinematic atmosphere. Yet, after the waves of intensity that precede them, the musical contrasts and dramatic effects seem less engaging here.

Exodus brings the album to a close. The beginning of the song is heavy, but the ending is extremely gentle, with piano and violin. Heaven has been reached, and our knight lays down his weapons. Calm gradually returns, bringing the album to a close on a note that is both orchestral and theatrical.

Nouveau changement d’ambiance avec If Not Now, When, où nous retrouvons notre chevalier brisé. Il y reprend espoir. Si ce n’est pas maintenant, alors quand? C’est une invitation à ne plus attendre et à reprendre son chemin. La vulnérabilité des paroles contraste avec la puissance de la chanson, qui réussit à rester magique jusqu’à la fin, avant de s’apaiser sur quelques notes de piano, accompagnant le violon d’Eddie. Notre chevalier retrouve enfin un peu de lumière. Pour faire le lien avec le titre de l’album, Axis Mundi, il semble arriver au bout du chemin vers le Ciel.

Avec Didn’t Think About You (Lately), la seconde ballade de l’album, nous nous éloignons de l’ambiance précédemment posée. Elle se place loin des sonorités violincore auxquelles le groupe nous a habitués. Une intruse se serait-elle glissée dans l’album? Au premier abord, difficile de la placer dans notre épopée chevaleresque.

Vient le tour de Leviathan. Déjà une troisième ballade? C’est ce que nous pouvons penser lors des premières dizaines de secondes, avant qu’Eddie ne nous rappelle à l’ordre. Ici, c’est un champ de bataille, et nous y sommes replongés avec les puissants riffs de guitare d’Harald et Alex, bientôt rejoints par les screams déchirants d’Eddie. Le Leviathan vient briser le calme qui semblait s’être installé. Un nouveau monstre se dresse devant notre héros, qui n’est donc pas au bout de son voyage.

Presque à bout de souffle, l’album nous propose Shed Your Skin et Power Divine, avec une puissance plus contenue. Les deux morceaux restent dans cette même ambiance cinématographique. Pourtant, après les déferlantes qui les précèdent, les contrastes musicaux et les effets dramatiques semblent ici moins prenants.

Exodus vient clôturer l’album. Le début de la chanson est lourd, mais la fin est extrêmement douce, entre piano et violon. Le Ciel est atteint, notre chevalier dépose les armes. Le calme revient peu à peu, venant clore l’album sur une note à la fois orchestrale et théâtrale.

The album starts very strongly, but may quickly seem to run out of steam once we become accustomed to the violence and depth of the opening tracks. By constantly alternating between brutality and softness, the contrast sometimes ends up losing some of its impact. The tracks Devil May Try, Didn’t Think About You (Lately), Shed Your Skin, and Power Divine work well, but they are less surprising once the onslaught of the other tracks has passed.

What we take away from it is a form of beauty and elegance emerging from the midst of suffering. Axis Mundi takes us into a world that is at once dark, brutal, and majestic, where Eddie’s violin becomes the guiding thread of this quest leading towards the light.

The adventure goes on !

The band is giving us the opportunity to extend this experience. To expand the world of Axis Mundi, a film of the same name, based on its universe and story, will be screened in several theaters around the world between September 29 and October 1. In Europe, London, Manchester, Amsterdam, Stockholm, and several cities in Germany are the lucky ones.

For France, we will have to wait for the next tour to continue this journey, which will stop on January 16, 2027, at the Zénith de Paris.

L’album commence très fort, mais peut sembler rapidement s’essouffler lorsque nous nous sommes habitués à la violence et à la profondeur des premiers titres. À force d’alterner brutalité et douceur, le contraste finit parfois par perdre de son impact. Les morceaux Devil May Try, Didn’t Think About You (Lately), Shed Your Skin et Power Divine fonctionnent, mais ils surprennent moins une fois passée la déferlante des autres morceaux.

Ce que nous en retenons, c’est qu’il en résulte une forme de beauté et d’élégance au milieu de la souffrance. Axis Mundi nous entraîne dans un univers à la fois sombre, brutal et majestueux, où le violon d’Eddie devient le fil conducteur de cette quête menant à la lumière.

Le groupe nous donne l’opportunité de prolonger cette expérience. Afin d’étendre le monde d’Axis Mundi, un film du même nom, reprenant son univers et son histoire, sera diffusé dans plusieurs salles à travers le monde entre le 29 septembre et le 1er octobre. En Europe, Londres, Manchester, Amsterdam, Stockholm et plusieurs villes d’Allemagne sont les heureuses élues.

Du côté de la France, il faudra attendre la prochaine tournée pour poursuivre ce voyage, qui fera une escale le 16 janvier 2027 au Zénith de Paris.
