If you like dark fantasy soundtracks like Queen of the Damned or The Crow, you’ll love Heartley and The Alteration, the band’s fifth album.

Heartley is the musical project of a multi-talented man: Aaron Sadrin. A French multi-instrumentalist and songwriter, he composes, writes, and produces all the albums alone on his own label since 2014 (Label “An Exile”). For live performances, he is accompanied by Nicolas Sindres on drums and Nicolas Jeff Thibaud on guitar and backing vocals, musicians like theater actors who each night embody and perform Aaron‘s creations (Sort of Mechanical Animals, in a way…).

Completely made up and painted in black, in a old school Wes Borland style, they take us into a dark cinematic universe reinforced by a futurist kind of Trent Reznor/HEALTH  EMB/Darkwave production and a dark fantasy industrial/nu-metal atmosphere. Musically, it brings to mind Trustcompany, The Anix (for the younger generation), or Marilyn Manson, but also, and this is rather new for them, modern metalcore bands.

Heartley c’est le projet musical d’un homme au multi-talents : Aaron Sadrin. Multi-instrumentistes et auteur-compositeur français, il compose, écrit et produit seul sur son propre label tous les albums de ce projet depuis 2014 (Label « An Exile »). Pour les besoins du live, il est accompagné de Nicolas Sindres à la batterie et de Nicolas Jeff Thibaud à la guitare et aux chœurs, des musiciens comme des acteurs de théâtre qui chaque soir incarnent et jouent les créations d’Aaron (des Mechanical Animals en quelques sortes…). Complétement maquillés et peints en noir à la Wes Borland de l’époque, ils nous embarquent dans un univers cinématographique sombre renforcé par une production très EBM à la Trent Reznor ou HEALTH et à l’ambiance dark fantasy Indus/nu-metal. Musicalement, on pense à Trustcompany, The Anix (pour les plus jeunes) ou Marilyn Manson mais aussi, et c’est plutôt nouveau chez eux, à des groupes de metalcore moderne.

The album starts off very strong with Suits You So Well, which immediately confirms the more metalcore feel of this album compared to its predecessors. Eye for an Eye continues with a heavy, old-school feel, akin to Rob Zombie or Fear Factory, but in modern style. The screaming is powerful, it looks a bit like Noah Sebastian from Bad Omens when he was playing metalcore (joke). You can hear it loud and clear on “Defiant Discourse”, easily the heaviest cut on the record.

L’album commence très fort avec Suits You so Well qui valide tout de suite la couleur plus metalcore de cet album par rapport aux précédents. Eye for an Eye continue dans la lourdeur avec un petit côté old school à la Rob Zombie ou Fear Factory mais tout en restant moderne. Le scream envoie, Il rappelle un peu celui de Noah Sebastian de Bad Omens quand il faisait du métalcore (blague). On peut notamment s’en apercevoir sur Defiant Discourse, le morceau le plus violent de l’album.

Aaron‘s clear vocals, like a whispered fragile and beautiful screaming, completely carry us away on the tracks The Ghost Within and Held Beneath. True breaks in this post-industrial apocalypse, they are however very quickly followed by instrumental interludes which, with their accelerating and distressing tempo, instantly plunge us back into the tumult and desolation. Shadow so Withdranwn (which follows the interlude And Wrath Followed) goes indeed from a clear voice and a rather EBM production to brutal metalcore screams and Defiant Discourse, after The Alteration, even goes as far as passages of guttural singing.

As We Take It Away orThe Duel In Me are in a more Nu-metal style. It is a perfect mix of this fragility and this violence, a condensation of this album in a way. It is a gateway for new listeners, a big single for me.

The album concludes with A Path of Shades, a more stripped-down acoustic piece reminiscent of Behind blue eyes by Limp bizkit or Coma white by Manson (and for the French side, a bit of Mass Hysteria).

Le chant clair d’Aaron, vaporeux et saturé, parfois à la limite d’un fry susurré et plein de fragilité, nous embarque complétement sur les titres The Ghost Within ou Held Beneath.  Véritables pauses dans cette apocalypse post industrielle, ils sont cependant très vite suivis d’interludes instrumentaux qui, avec leur tempo accélérant et angoissant, nous replongent instantanément dans le tumulte et la désolation et nous prépare pour la suite. Shadow so Withdranwn (qui suit l’interlude And Wrath Followed), malgré un début plutôt calme voix claire et une production plutôt EBM, embraye en effet très vitre sur des screams brutaux de metalcore et Defiant Discourse, après The Alteration, va même jusqu’à des passages de chants gutturaux.

On retrouve également des morceaux plus Nu Metal comme As We Take It Away ou The Duel In Me qui est un parfait mix de cette fragilité et de cette violence, un condensé de cet album en quelque sorte. Il est une porte d’accès pour de nouveaux auditeurs, un gros single pour moi. Enfin, pour finir, l’album se conclut avec A Path of Shades, un morceau acoustique plus dépouillé qui rappelle Behind blue eyes de Limp bizkit ou Coma white de Manson (et pour le côté Français, un peu Mass Hysteria).

Currently better known outside our borders, Heartlay is a French band to watch. Already recognized for their solid live performances in the UK, we hope this excellent album will bring them even more recognition here in France. A very well-produced album with plenty of ’90s and ’00s vibes, but whose modernity plunges us not into the past but into a violent, end-of-the-world post-industrial future.

Pour le moment plus connu en dehors de nos frontières, Heartlay est un groupe français à suivre. Déjà reconnus pour leurs prestations live solides aux UK, on espère que cet excellent album leur apportera encore plus de lumière chez nous. Un album très bien produit avec plein de codes des années 90, 2000 mais dont la modernité nous plonge non pas dans le passé mais dans un futur post industriel violent de fin du monde.
