Polaris, Northlane, Parkway Drive, Thornhill, and Windwaker, like big brothers, brought them along to the biggest Australian stages where they gained invaluable experience. True protégés of the Aussie metalcore scene, this band, still nurtured and protected, is a well-kept national secret, but one that’s increasingly gaining traction as these Brisbane natives grow so quickly and successfully.

Headwreck, the new rising star of Australian metalcore, is releasing already their third EP Attitude Adjustment. For this occasion, the band has completely shaken things up with a more festive, 100% carefree, YOLO-style approach (“we don’t care about the lyrics”). A rather daring move in this genre, which is predominantly melancholic with complex and melodramatic lyrics.

Founded in 2019, and after a few lineup changes, Headwreck currently consists of Connor Hickman on vocals, Jamo Benadie (guitar and clean vocals), Colby Horton (drums), and Dayne Paix (bass and backing vocals). Like Vianova or The John Candy, they play a nu-metalcore sound that’s sometimes quite aggressive but always celebratory, featuring plenty of vocal samples, pop culture references, 8-bit sounds, and old-school scratching in every direction (scratching in metal is so cool!).

Headwreck, nouveau phénomène en herbe du metalcore Australien, sort tout de même son troisième EP Attitude Adjustment. Le groupe, pour cette occasion, à complétement renversé la table avec une orientation plus festive, 100% sans prise de tête, en mode YOLO « we don’t care about the lyrics ». Un pari plutôt osé dans ce genre musical majoritairement triste, aux paroles complexes et mélodramatiques.

Fondé en 2019, et après quelques changements dans le line-up, Headwreck est actuellement composé de Connor Hickman au chant, Jamo Benadie (guitare et clean voacl), Colby Horton (batterie) et de Dayne Paix (basse et choeurs). A l’instar de Vianova ou The John Candy, ils pratiquent un Nu-metalcore parfois bien vénère mais toujours festif avec beaucoup de samples de voix, de références de pop culture, de sons 8 bits et de scratchs à l’ancienne dans tous les sens (c’est tellement cool les scratchs dans le métal !).

Their debut single, “Buzzflow,” released in 2024, marks a change in the band’s direction, notably with the arrival of a new producer, Chris Lalic, drummer and producer of Windwaker. It’s a very nu-metal, party-oriented sound with lots of scratching and some really cool clean vocal passages in a totally uninhibited style.

“No more sad shit, I’ll scream like I don’t care,” screams Coonor on Bingo. As Jamo himself says, this track best reflects what the group wants. It features a more aggressive scream than Buzzflow (but still interspersed with scratching) and an even crazier and more melodic clean vocal section from Jamo, along with that almost-rapped break that leads back into the clean vocal chorus. A huge hit single for me.

They’re really wild and have fun on stage as much as they do in their lyrics. In Filet-O-Fish, a title chosen just for laughs and which has nothing to do with the lyrics, you want to throw back at them the question that often comes up in the song: “Have you lost your fucking mind?”. Their new direction often resurfaces in the lyrics (“Wreckers with the new flow”) in a playful way, packed with pop culture references like “our third release just like Tokyo Drift, going hard, number 3 – revenge of the sith,” or even quoting Skillex or Fast and Furious. Ready for battle, they even incite us with a sample of “Are you ready to rumble?” by the famous boxing commentator Michael Buffer.

Buzzflow, Premiere titre sorti en 2024 marque le changement de direction du groupe avec notamment l’arrivée d’un nouveau producteur en la personne de Chris Lalic, batteur et producteur de Windwaker. Un son festif très nu-metal avec de nombreux scratch et des passages de voix claire très sympas en total lâcher-prise.

« No more sad shit, I’ll scream like I don’t care » scream Coonor sur Bingo. Comme le dit Jamo lui-même, ce titre reflète le plus ce que souhaite le groupe. On retrouve sur ce titre un scream plus bourrin que sur Buzzflow (mais toujours entremêlés de scratch) et un passage de voix claire encore plus dingue et mélodique de Jamo et cette espèce de break presque rappé qui repart sur le refrain voix claire. Un gros gros single pour moi.

Ils sont vraiment barrés et s’amusent sur scène comme dans les textes.  Dans Filet-O-Fish, titre choisi juste pour se marrer et qui n’a rien à voir avec les textes, on a envie de leur retourner question qui revient souvent dans le titre : « have you lost your fucking mind ? ». Leur nouvelle direction revient souvent dans les textes (« Wreckers with the new flow ») de manière amusante et bourré de références populaires « our third relase just like Tokyo Drift, going hard, number 3- revenge of the sith » ou citant encore Skillex ou fast and Furious. Prêts à en découdre, ils nous invictent même avec le sample de « are you ready to rumble ?? » du célèbre présentateur de boxe Michal Buffer.

On “Plan Z”, the lyrics are a bit deeper, addressing the feeling of walking a tightrope in one’s choices, teetering on the edge between life and death and letting go of past constraints, self-acceptance, and acceptance of the future. I love the screamed sections, all speed and scratches, the lyrics “don’t don’t float” or “go go choke choke” that sound like JUMP JUM JUMP, giving you a furious urge to jump around.

The EP ends on a more “pop” note with “Razor”  that kinda sounds like Dayseeker or From Fall to Spring. More pop-oriented vocal passages interspersed with screamed sections, culminating in a harmonious blend of the two vocals—a perfect conclusion to the EP.

Nine tracks were announced, which was surprising for an EP, but the remaining tracks are actually electro remixes of “Filet-O-Fish” featuring Daybreak in a dubstep/drum’n’bass style, “Low Blow” featuring Martin Curkovic in a more electro vein, and “Plan Z” featuring Bleach.Bath in a jungle style reminiscent of BMTH’s work on Amo.

Sur Plan z, on est sur un texte un peu plus profond qui parle d’être sur la corde raide dans ses choix, jusqu’à être sur le fil entre la vie et la mort et du lâcher-prise face aux contraintes passées, l’acceptation de soit et l’acceptation de l’avenir. J’adore les passages screamés tout en accélération et bourrés de scratchs, les paroles « don’t don’t float » ou « go go chocke choke » qui sonnent comme des JUMP JUM JUMP qui donnent une furieuse envie de sauter partout.

L’EP se finit sur une touche plus « pop » avec le titre Razor à la Dayseeker ou From Fall to Spring avec des passages chantés plus longs et plus pop mais tout de même entrecoupés de passages criés pour finir sur une harmonie des deux chants, ce qui concluent parfaitement l’EP.

On annonçait neuf titres, ce qui était étonnant pour un EP, mais le reste des titres sont en fait des remix electro de Filet-O-Fish feat Daybreak en mode dubstep, drum’nbass, de Low Blow feat Martin Curkovic plutôt electro et Plan Z feat Bleach.Bath en mode Jungle qui rappelle un peu ce qu’avait fait BMTH sur Amo.

With Chris Lalic now at the helm of production and a renewed focus on having fun, this EP marks a new direction for them, one that we find quite welcome, as “Attitude Adjustment” is a welcome respite from the sometimes overly melancholic metalcore sound. A welcome and intelligent departure to stand out in today’s metalcore scene made of countless new bands with an uniform style. They should very likely be leaving the nest very soon, given their recent signing with Capital Artist Group and the partnerships already announced with American and British promoters, we can’t wait to see them here!

Avec désormais, Chris Lalic à la production et la volonté nouvelle de se faire plaisir avant tout, cet EP marque une orientation nouvelle dans leur direction qui n’est pas pour nous déplaire tant cet Attitude Adjustment est une parfaite récréation dans ce metalcore parfois trop tristounet. Une démarcation salutaire et intelligente pour tirer son épingle du jeu dans ce metalcore actuel aux milliards de nouveaux groupes à la direction souvent trop uniforme. Ils devraient en toute vraisemblance quitter leur nid très prochainement avec leur récente signature chez Capital Artist Group et les partenariats déjà annoncées avec des tourneurs américains et anglais, on a hâte de voir cela chez nous !
