Six Shot Morning opens the album and sets the tone with a tension that never quite fades away. Rather than relying on raw energy, the band favours an immersive, almost oppressive atmosphere. This feeling carries over into Marianne, where melancholy takes centre stage, as well as Demolition, One Man and Japan, which help shape a strange sonic landscape marked by a persistent sense of imbalance.

The album brings together a certain emotional coldness and genuine intensity. Grian Chatten’s voice, both menacing and vulnerable, serves as the guiding thread throughout a record marked by a sense of painful lucidity. It lends a deeply human dimension to compositions that can sometimes feel overly abstract. Happy For You and You Miss Me continue this exploration of emotional relationships, while Intimate talks about the difficulty of preserving genuine intimacy in a world dominated by appearances and constant overstimulation.

The presence of Rosalía on Where Is Gone ? also reflects the band’s stylistic openness. The collaboration brings a new dimension to the album, highlighting Fontaines D.C.’s willingness to explore other musical worlds while challenging the boundaries of their own sound.

Meanwhile, Tongue reveals another side of the album, balancing rhythmic confidence with a sense of strangeness, while Mimesis continues the record’s exploration of appearances and repetition.

The band continues its musical transformation, gradually moving away from its post-punk roots. However, by prioritising textures, atmospheres and sophisticated arrangements, Fontaines D.C. sometimes risk losing some of the spontaneity that made their earlier albums so distinctive. Following in the footsteps of Romance, Dopamine Chamber favours meticulous craftsmanship and sonic seduction : the band gains in sonic richness what it occasionally sacrifices in immediacy.

Beneath this evolution lies a reflection on the paradoxes of our time : the need for ever more intense sensations, the difficulty of finding lasting peace, and the feeling of emptiness that can linger beneath constant overstimulation.

As the band says in One Man, Dopamine Chamber just tryna kill the pain. And the album does its job.

Our pick : Mimesis

Comme ils le disent eux-même dans One Man, Dopamine Chamber just tryna kill the pain.
