From Atmospheric Djentcore to Petals of Blegh

Barren, band of the French screamer streamer Bakared, founded in 2021, has released its first EP, Aerium. Julien (aka Bakared) has been posting metal content for years as influencer such as interviews, Twitch streams, and even covers on social media (Twitch, Instagram, YouTube). His Instagram account includes excerpts of covers of iconic scream passages that showcase the breadth of his vocal range, such as “Forgotten” by The Plot In You, or “How We Used to Say Goodbye” by Invent, Animate.

Du djentcore atmosphérique aux pétales de blegh

Barren, groupe du screameur streamer français  Bakared fondé en 2021 sort son premier EP appelé Aerium. Véritable influenceur du genre, Julien (aka Bakared) propose depuis des années sur les réseaux (twitch, instagram, youtube) du contenu metal, interviews, lives twitch et même des covers. On peut notamment trouver sur son compte instagram des extraits de covers de passages de scream iconiques qui montrent l’étendu de sa palette vocale de cris comme sur Forgotten de The Plot In You,  ou sur How we used to say goodbye de Invent, Animate

Vocal-wise, Aerium is a mix between Ten56 in the bass and Architects in the treble (especially on the eponymous track “Aerium” and “Alone“), but also features more guttural passages. It’s mostly False Chord, but he uses a lot of different techniques (I’m not expert enough like him to describe them), perhaps too many, some might say, but for a first EP and coming from the “influencer” world, it’s normal that he shows all what he can do. Imposter syndrome perhaps… But the guy is tough, we quickly understand. At the end of the track Mirage, we can see it as Bakared goes from a very deep scream to a very high-pitched scream in the same breath.

Sound-wise, the band and the production (Buster Odeholm, who notably produced Thrown) have managed to channel the guy and his desire to do well. It’s more of a mix between djentcore and metalcore, in a rather dark retro-futuristic atmosphere. We go from sampled and electro introductions to walls of sound that perfectly frame Bakared in a homogeneous atmosphere while letting him explore all his screams. The EP is at the end very coherent and very successful. They even managed to create a very original atmosphere and a true identity in just a few tracks (which is very difficult and rare in current metalcore).

Au niveau du chant,  Aerium est un mélange entre Ten56 dans les graves et  Architects dans les aigus  (surtout sur le titre éponyme Aerium et Alone) mais avec également des passages plus gutturaux. On est dans l’ensemble sur du False chord mais il exploite beaucoup de techniques différentes (je ne suis pas assez expert comme lui pour les décrire), peut-être trop diront certains, mais pour un premier EP et venant du milieu des « influenceurs », normal qu’il en mette beaucoup. Syndrome de l’imposteur peut-être… Mais le mec est balaise, on le comprend vite. Sur la fin du titre Mirage, on peut s’en rendre compte tant Bakared passe d’un cri très grave à un cri très aigu dans une même respiration.

Au niveau du son, le groupe et la production (Buster Odeholm qui a produit notamment Thrown) ont su canaliser le bonhomme et sa volonté de bien faire. On est plutôt entre djentcore et métalcore, dans une atmosphère rétro-futuriste assez sombre. On passe d’introductions samplées et électro à des murs de sons qui encadrent parfaitement Bakared dans une ambiance homogène tout en le laissant explorer tous ses screams. L’EP est au final très cohérent, et très réussi, Ils ont même réussi en seulement quelques titres à créer une atmosphère très originale et une vraie identité (ce qui est très dur et rare dans le metalcore actuel).

And now?

With this EP, Bakared has proven that he belongs. Now that he’s flexed his muscles to prove it, we’re looking forward to more sensitive tracks that are also the hallmarks of this melodic metalore/djent style (and why not with a clear voice like on the latest The Plot In You). In any case, this person exudes a lot of humility and a constant quest for perfection despite his already exceptional level. This is evidenced by his very interesting new show concept, which I highly recommend, where he invites a singer to talk to us about screaming techniques. We can’t wait to hear the rest and wish them the best for the future.

Et maintenant ?

Bakared avec cet EP a prouvé qu’il avait sa place. Maintenant qu’il a sorti les gros muscles pour le démontrer, on l’attend sur des titres plus en douceur qui sont aussi l’apanage de ce metalore/djent mélodique (et pourquoi pas en voix claire comme sur le dernier  The Plot In You). Il dégage en tout cas de cette personne beaucoup d’humilité et une quête permanente de perfection malgré son niveau déjà exceptionnel. En atteste son nouveau concept d’émission très intéressant que je vous recommande chaudement où il invite un chanteur à nous parler de technique de screaming. On a hâte d’écouter la suite et on leur souhaite le meilleur pour la suite.

Gladyce’s Take

Personally, I don’t really hear much of a connection to Ten56. However, I can see a distant comparison to Sam Carter (Architects), especially in some of the higher tones and the way the emotion is channeled through the screams.
And while the review mentioned The Plot In You as a possible direction for future clean vocals, let’s be honest, that’s a nearly unreachable benchmark. The Plot In You is The Plot In You, after all.

I also want to highlight something that often gets overlooked: the quality and importance of the instrumental work. The instrumentals on Aerium aren’t just a backdrop for the vocals, they’re a core part of the project’s identity. Every riff, every breakdown, every atmospheric passage feels purpose-built to support the voice without ever overshadowing it. The musicians backing Bakared deserve serious credit here: their playing is tight, expressive, and meticulously crafted. That balance between vocal power and instrumental writing is what gives Aerium its coherence and real emotional depth.

I would have loved to mention the musicians by name, but finding any information about them proved nearly impossible, which is a real shame.

Le point de vue de Gladyce

De mon côté, je n’entends pas particulièrement de lien avec Ten56. En revanche, je peux comprendre une comparaison lointaine avec Sam Carter (Architects), notamment dans certaines nuances aiguës et dans la manière de canaliser l’émotion derrière les cris.
Et si la chronique évoquait The Plot In You comme une possible direction pour un futur chant clair, il faut bien admettre que c’est un idéal presque inatteignable, The Plot In You, c’est The Plot In You.

J’aimerais aussi insister sur un point souvent oublié : la qualité et l’importance de l’instrumental. L’instru sur Aerium ne sert pas simplement de support au vocal, c’est une composante essentielle de l’identité du projet. Chaque riff, chaque break, chaque passage atmosphérique est pensé pour porter la voix sans jamais la noyer. Les musiciens derrière Bakared font un travail d’une précision impressionnante, à la fois technique et expressif. Ils méritent d’être pleinement reconnus, car c’est cette alchimie entre puissance vocale et écriture instrumentale qui donne à Aerium toute sa cohérence et sa profondeur.

J’aurais adoré mentionner les musiciens par leur nom, mais trouver la moindre information à leur sujet s’est révélé presque impossible, ce qui est vraiment dommage.
