So go ahead, grab your finest pint of Guinness or pour yourself a stiff glass of whiskey, and let’s dive into Dropkick Murphys’ 13th studio album: For the People.

Allez, attrapez donc votre plus belle choppe de Guiness ou votre verre de whiskey et partons à la découverte de ce 13éme album studio du groupe « for the people ».

“Who’ll Stand With Us”

This track sets the tone right out of the gate with a punchy punk-rock riff, and, as always, the bagpipes come in and elevate the whole thing. The structure may be classic, but it’s tight and straight-up effective, with a super catchy chorus that sticks.

“Long Shot”

Here we’re back to the band’s more traditional Irish roots. The guitars ease off a bit to let the acoustic instruments shine, flute, mandolin, and of course those signature bagpipes, which, let’s be honest, are a huge part of what gives Dropkick their charm. You can practically smell the Guinness and feel your fist hitting the table like it’s St. Patrick’s Day, though the track itself doesn’t quite get the blood pumping.

“The Big Man”

Now this one’s right up my alley, a fatter, grittier punk sound that makes Long Shot feel like a setup for what’s coming. We’re talking big, chunky riffs, simple but effective hooks, and just a touch of fuzz that gives the whole thing a gnarlier edge. This is where things start to hit hard.

“Chesterfield and Aftershave”, “Bury the Bones”, “Sooner Kill ’Em First”

The tone shifts here, we’re diving into a more acoustic-driven territory. These songs feel like heartfelt nods to Irish folk tradition: melodic, rhythmic, and easy to sing along to, the kind of tunes Dropkick does so well. Let’s be real, this is part of why we love them, right?

“The Vulture Circle”

After what I’d call the album’s slower middle section (see: conclusion), the band kicks things back into gear with a track full of energy and bounce. It’s light, upbeat, and refreshingly fun, exactly what I want from Dropkick Murphys. Catchy major chords, group vocals, and a driving rhythm that brings a smile to your face. Easily a standout moment for me.

On annonce la couleur très rapidement sur un riff bien punk-rock avec une cornemuse qui sublime le tout comme à son habitude, la composition est classique mais diablement efficace avec son refrain très « catchi » !

« Long shot »

De retour sur le côté plus « traditionnel irlandais » du groupe, on baisse légèrement les potards des guitares pour laisser plus de place aux instruments acoustique tels que la flute, la mandoline et la cornemuse qui fait à mon gout une grosse part du charme du groupe. On se retrouve propulsé à la saint Patrick à taper du poing sur la table mais malgré tout le morceau peine à nous entrainer.

« The Big Man »

Alors là je suis client, registre beaucoup plus punk et gras que Long shot qui finalement ne servait peut-être qu’a mieux nous introduire The Big Man ? Bref on part sur des gimmicks simples, un son plus rond et lourd avec le rajout d’une très légère fuzz qui rend l’ensemble bien velu, ici on kiffe.

Changements de registre pour ces morceaux, on est dans quelques chose de beaucoup plus acoustique que précédemment, des odes à la culture irlandaise, chantante et entrainante ce que sait très bien faire les dropkick  . Après tout on signe pour ça aussi non ?

« The Vulture Circle »

Après ce que j’appellerais le ventre mou de l’album (Cf conclusion) le groupe nous sert un morceau plein d’entrain et qui vraiment fais office de second souffle lors de l’écoute, de la légèreté et une belle énergie, typiquement ce que j’attends du groupe, une guitare entrainante un refrain en cœur sur des accords majeurs et on a le sourire aux lèvres. Certainement mon coup de cœur de l’album.

Following up This Machine Still Kills Fascists, For the People brings back the gritty distortion that’s been mostly shelved since 2021, and honestly, we’re here for it. That said, the album still struggles to truly stand out. There are definitely some strong moments, and I genuinely enjoyed the ride, but there’s a lingering sense of déjà vu that hangs over most of the record.

But hey, isn’t that kind of what we asked for? More of that classic Dropkick Murphys sound?

Well… yes and no. It was great to dive back into their world, they’re still masters at what they do, but I just wish they’d pushed the envelope a bit more, either expanding or shaking up their formula.

A solid listen for longtime fans, no complaints, just maybe no surprises either.

Succédant à « This machine still fascist », « For the people » repart du côté de la distorsion laissez de côté depuis 2021 et ça nous plait ! Mais malgré tout il peine à sortir du lot, de belles choses sont présentent et je n’ai pas boudé mon plaisir à l’écoute de ce dernier mais il y à tout ce même cet air de déjà entendu tout au long de l’album.

Mais après tout, ce n’est pas ce que nous voulions ? encore plus de ce Dropkick Murphys ?

Et bien oui et non, j’ai aimé retrouver cet univers et pour ça ils sont fort mais j’aurais beaucoup aimé qu’ils enrichissent un peu leur registre ou du moins qu’ils le diversifient.
