What better way to kick off a first chronicle than to focus on a debut album: Crystal Throne, released in 2021 by the eponymous band Crystal Throne, formed in 2019? The members are Max Yme on guitar, Terry DeFire on guitar and vocals, Jefferson Brand on bass guitar, John L also on guitar, and finally, Guillaume from the youtube channel Batteur de metal.
They immerse us in a heavy, power, and progressive metal sound that you never get tired of listening to.
A special feature of this album is that the guitar and vocals were recorded live, some of which can be found on Max Yme’s YouTube channel. Nine live tracks resulted in the nine compositions we find on the album, with a tenth track as a bonus on the vinyl.
The artwork on the T-shirt, CD, and vinyl, as well as titles like Crystal Warrior, Fate and Triumph, and Valkyrie Ride, immediately set the tone for the heavy and power metal influences. There is a clear connection to bands like Fates Warning, Savatage, and Judas Priest, as well as more contemporary groups like Sin Starlett. Crystal Throne is inspired, but not locked in these influences. Indeed, we can recognize traces of these classic bands, but without ever feeling like it’s just a series of bland covers. Crystal Throne stands out for its modernity, as even though we hear some groovy parts reminiscent of Iron Maiden, the
technicality of the riffs propels us into another dimension. Now, let’s focus on the tracks of the album:

Quoi de mieux pour une toute première chronique que de s’intéresser à un tout premier album : Crystal Throne sorti en 2021, du groupe éponyme Crystal Throne formé en 2019.
Ses membres, Max Yme à la guitare, Terry DeFire à la guitare et au chant, Jefferson Brand à la guitare basse, John L à la guitare également et enfin Guillaume de la chaîne batteur de metal à la batterie nous plonge dans un heavy power metal progressif qu’on ne peut se lasser d’écouter. Particularité de cet album, c’est que la guitare et le chant ont été enregistrés en live, dont on peut en retrouver quelques-uns sur la chaîne youtube de Max Yme. Neuf lives qui ont abouti aux neuf compos que nous retrouvons sur l’album et une dixième en bonus sur le vinyle.
Aussi bien l’artwork du T-shirt, du cd et du vinyle que certains titres comme Crystal Warrior, Fate and triumph ou encore Valkyrie Ride annoncent d’entrée de jeu les inspirations heavy et power. On retrouve en effet une certaine filiation avec des groupes tels que Fates Warning, Savatage et Judas Priest, ou Sin Starlett comme groupe plus contemporain.
Crystal Throne est inspiré certes mais pas non plus enfermé. En effet, nous nous plaisons à reconnaître quelques traces de ces anciens groupes mais sans jamais nous dire que ce ne sont que de vulgaires reprises. Crystal throne se démarque par sa modernité car bien que nous puissions retrouver des parties assez groovy à la Iron Maiden la technicité des riffs nous propulse dans une autre dimension. Après cette entrée en matière intéressons nous désormais aux titres de l’album

FATE AND TRIUMPH
The opening track of the album. It begins with a very airy feel, immediately grabbing us with a melody carried by the guitar. After this soft passage, the track picks up speed at the thirty-eight-second mark when all the instruments burst forth in unison. The vocal tone comes in at the fiftieth second, and we are left anticipating that the next 45 minutes of listening will be a pure delight.

RISE TO GLORY
From the very intro, this track announces that it will be fast and technical. Guitar, bass, and drums take us on a wild ride chasing the notes, much to our enjoyment. Fast and technical, these are the key words for a samurai heading into battle, as conveyed by the singer’s high-pitched voice, which seems tireless. The alternating fast and technical moments, where the musicians treat us to their virtuosity, much like a samurai fighting for survival, interspersed with calmer moments, like a samurai catching his breath, immerses us in this battle unfolding before our eyes. However, the track ends somewhat abruptly, leaving us wanting more. The battle had been so enjoyable that we wished it would never end. Fortunately, we quickly recover from our sorrow, as there are still seven more tracks to savor.

TIMESCAPE
A blend of nostalgic accents from Lamartine’s Le Lac and Baudelaire’s L’ennemi with heavy metal gave birth to this track. However, while the lyrics of the latter are certainly less poetic, the instrumental part gives it a completely different power. Once again, we hear that quick playing with a particularly captivating riff that we anticipate will return at any moment. This track, slightly longer than the previous one, rewards us with a fantastic solo from 2:43 to 3:20, transporting us out of time for those 37 seconds. During this brief moment, we forget the nostalgic tone of the lyrics, and it’s pure pleasure. In the final pre-chorus, the singer’s voice intensifies the high notes a little more, which may sometimes be off-putting, but this moment is quite brief and doesn’t detract from the overall enjoyment of the song.

SHADES OF EXISTENCE
Here, we shift in tone. After the technicality, it’s time for aggression, with an intro focused more on power and execution speed, while the vocals dip into lower tones before quickly soaring back to the highs. The drumming and main riff stand out, the first for its power and the second for its entrancing quality, which is highly appreciated. To top it off, the track boasts a 1:18 solo, where we truly appreciate the musicality of this piece. As for the lyrics, after the nostalgia, they focus on solitude and the pain following a romantic breakup, while a somewhat classic approach, it remains effective.

STEELBIRDS
The album’s flagship track, formerly the only one with a music video and still the most anticipated by fans in the pit. We still find that same speed and technicality that characterizes the album, which overall never tires and keeps us eager for the next track. In fact, it’s impossible to listen to this one without moving, as its frantic tempo carries us along to the rhythm of the aerial warfare described by the singer. A piece as fast as a fighter jet, and we come out just as breathless as if we had been flying for two hours.

FORESHADOWED SAND
Once again, we encounter a track that focuses on power, with a heavy riff that pierces us with determination. After wanting to move frantically, this track would motivate us to smash walls with our bare hands. As for the lyrics, they stay true to the warrior theme, describing the glory of a past empire whose ruins still emanate millennia of power. These 5:12 of glory and strength almost make us dream of returning to Thermopylae alongside Leonidas.

VALKYRIE RIDE
After aerial combat and ancient wars, Crystal Throne now takes us into the fury of a mythological battle, and as the title suggests, into Norse mythology. The second-longest track on the album, it whisks us away on this space-time journey as quickly as Thor’s Mjöllnir is hurled. The rhythm shifts slightly, but not enough to create entirely different moods, yet monotony never settles in.

MECHANICAL TYRANNY
Urgency and imminence, that’s how we can describe this track. Humanity finds itself on the brink of extinction due to machines and technology, with very little time left to react. Time is running out throughout this track, driven by its frantic pace, and the brevity emphasizes the imminent danger. This is also the second track on the album with an animated music video, created by @don_tancredo.

CRYSTAL WARRIOR
The closing track of the album and the longest one, it treats us to one final delight. The intro is soft and melodic before the rhythm gradually intensifies, painting the portrait of a Crystal Warrior. This track also plays with rhythm variation. From 4:28 to 4:44, the music becomes almost a whisper before speeding up once more. So, when the track eases, we are cradled by the melody, and when it picks up speed, we are filled with a warrior’s strength, ensuring
that each variation highlights the next, creating a track we never tire of.

FATE AND TRIUMPH
Le morceau liminaire de l’album. Il s’ouvre de manière très aérienne et de suite nous accroche par sa mélodie portée par une guitare. Après ce passage assez doux, le morceau accélère à la trente-huitième seconde quand tous les instruments s’élancent d’une seule
voix. La tonalité du chant apparaît aussi à la cinquantième seconde et tout nous laisse prévoir que les 45 prochaines minutes d’écoute vont un être un pur régale.

RISE TO GLORY
Dès l’intro ce morceau annonce qu’il sera rapide et technique; guitare, basse et batterie nous entraine dans une course folle après les notes pour notre plus grand plaisir. Rapide et technique, voila les deux mots-clés pour un samouraï qui part à la guerre comme le raconte
la voix aiguë du chanteur qui semble infatigable. L’alternance entre les moments rapides et techniques où les musiciens nous régalent de leur virtuosité, comme un samouraï se battant pour survivre, avec des instants un peu plus calme, comme un samouraï qui reprend son souffle, nous plonge au coeur de cette bataille que nous voyons s’étendre sous nos yeux.
Cependant, le morceau s’achève de façon un peu abrupte et nous laisse sur notre fin. La guerre était devenue si plaisante à écouter que nous aurions voulut qu’elle ne finisse jamais.
Enfin nous nous remettons vite de notre peine car il reste encore sept morceaux à apprécier.

TIMESCAPE
Le croisement des accents nostalgiques du Lac de Lamartine et de L’ennemi de Baudelaire avec le heavy metal a donné naissance à ce morceau. Mais si les paroles du second sont certes moins poétiques, la partie instrumentale lui confère une tout autre puissance. En effet, nous retrouvons encore cette rapidité du jeu avec un riff particulièrement prenant dont nous attendons la reprise à chaque instant. Ce morceau un peu plus long que le précédent nous gratifie d’un fantastique solo de 2’43 à 3’20 qui nous entraîne hors du temps car pendant ces 37 secondes nous oublions la tonalité nostalgique des paroles et c’est un vrai
condensé de plaisir. Lors du dernier pré refrain la voix du chanteur intensifie un peu plus les aigus ce qui peut parfois déplaire mais cela se concentre sur un instant assez bref et ne diminue en rien le caractère agréable de l’écoute.

SHADES OF EXISTENCE
Ici on change de tonalité. Après la technicité, place à l’agressivité avec une intro bien plus portée sur la puissance et la vitesse d’exécution tandis que la voix se teinte d’accents plus graves que les précédents avant de vite repartir dans les aigus. Le jeu de la batterie et le riff principal se distinguent particulièrement, le premier pour sa puissance et le deuxième pour son côté envoûtant dès plus appréciable; et comble de bonheur le morceau se targue d’un solo d’une minute et dix-huit secondes où l’on apprécie la musicalité de ce titre. Quant aux
paroles après la nostalgie elles se concentrent sur la solitude et la douleur qui suit une séparation amoureuse ; approche assez classique certes mais toujours efficace.

STEELBIRDS
Titre phare de l’album, anciennement le seul à se doter d’un clip et toujours le plus attendu dans fans dans la fosse. On retrouve toujours cette rapidité et technicité qui caractérise l’album qui dans son ensemble ne s’essouffle pas et nous motive toujours à écouter la chanson d’après. D’ailleurs impossible d’écouter celle-ci sans bouger tant le tempo frénétique nous emmène au rythme de la guerre aérienne décrite par le chanteur. Un morceau aussi vif que peut l’être un avion de chasse et on en ressort aussi essouflé.e qu’après deux heures de vol.

FORESHADOWED SAND
Nous avons de nouveau à faire à un morceau qui se concentre sur la puissance avec un riff lourd qui nous transperce avec détermination. Après avoir eu envie de bouger frénétiquement, ce titre nous motiverait à fracasser des murs à main nues. Quant aux paroles, elles restent toujours guerrières et nous décrivent la gloire d’un empire passé dont les ruines transpirent encore une puissance millénaire. Ces 5’12’’ de gloire et de puissance nous feraient presque rêver de retourner aux Thermopyles aux côtés de Léonidas.

VALKYRIE RIDE
Après les combats aériens et les guerres antiques, Crystal Throne nous plonge désormais dans la fureur d’une bataille mythologique et comme le titre l’indique la mythologie nordique.
Deuxième plus long morceau de l’album, il nous transporte dans ce voyage spatio-temporel aussi vite que le Mjöllnir lancé par Thor. Le rythme varie légèrement mais non au point de construire différentes ambiances, pourtant jamais la monotonie ne s’installe.

MECHANICAL TYRANNY
Urgence et imminence, voila comment nous pouvons présenter ce morceau. L’espèce humaine se retrouve à l’aube de son extinction par les machines et la technologie et il ne lui reste que très peu de temps pour réagir. Le temps presse tout au long de ce morceau au rythme effréné dont la brièveté insiste sur l’imminence du danger.

CRYSTAL WARRIOR
Morceau de clôture de l’album et titre le plus long, il nous régale une dernière fois. L’intro se fait douce et mélodieuse avant que le rythme s’intensifie progressivement pour dresser le portrait d’un Crystal Warrior. Ce titre joue également sur la variation de rythme. En effet, de 4’28’’ à 4’44’’ la musique devient presque un murmure avant de repartir encore plus rapide qu’elle ne l’a été. Ainsi, quand le morceau s’apaise nous sommes bercés par la mélodie et
quand il accélère nous sommes pétri.es d’une force guerrière de sorte à ce que chaque variation se souligne entre elles pour construire un morceau dont nous nous lassons jamais.

In conclusion, this is an album that’s a true pleasure to listen to, both at home and in the pit at a concert. While there isn’t a specific story tying the tracks together, the classic themes of war and introspective pieces provide a consistent enjoyment throughout the album. Moreover, announcements about the upcoming second album suggest it will be even more refined, with a storyline unfolding across the tracks. We can’t wait for it!

Pour conclure nous pouvons retenir que c’est un album très plaisant à écouter aussi bien chez soi que dans la fosse d’un concert. S’il n’y a pas d’histoire qui lie particulièrement les morceaux entre eux, nous retrouvons les thèmes classiques de la guerre et des morceaux plus introspectifs avec un plaisir qui ne varie pas tout au long de l’album. Enfin, les annonces à propos du deuxième album en préparation le présentent comme étant plus abouti et avec une trame qui se déroule au long des morceaux. On l’attend avec impatience!
