From the very first listen, one thing is immediately clear: this is a dense record. Not just heavy or aggressive, but emotionally loaded. The production is massive and razor-sharp, almost clinical at times, yet never cold. Every riff, every rhythmic shift, every build-up is designed to hit hard without overwhelming the bigger picture. You can hear a band in full control of its craft, knowing exactly when, and how, to twist the knife.

The arrival of John Robert Centorrino on vocals is, unsurprisingly, the most striking change. His performance is gripping, balancing sheer brutality with moments of real vulnerability. Rooted firmly in deathcore, his voice brings a more direct, confrontational kind of violence, but above all, a renewed sense of emotional urgency. The lyrics feel deeply personal, almost like a diary set to music—marked by sacrifice, exhaustion, doubt, and an unrelenting drive to keep moving forward.

Dès l’écoute, une chose frappe : l’album est dense. Pas seulement lourd ou agressif, mais chargé émotionnellement. La production est massive, précise, presque clinique par moments, mais jamais froide. Chaque riff, chaque rupture rythmique, chaque montée est pensée pour frapper fort sans écraser l’ensemble. On sent un groupe qui maîtrise parfaitement ses outils et qui sait exactement quand appuyer là où ça fait mal.

L’arrivée de John Robert Centorrino au chant est évidemment l’élément le plus marquant. Sa performance vocale est impressionnante, autant par sa brutalité que par sa vulnérabilité. Sa voix, clairement ancrée dans le deathcore, apporte une violence plus frontale que par le passé, mais surtout une urgence émotionnelle nouvelle. Les textes, très personnels, donnent l’impression d’un journal intime mis en musique, traversé par les sacrifices, la fatigue, le doute, mais aussi la rage de continuer.

Musically, the album is still built on a solid metalcore foundation: clear structures, heavyweight grooves, and breakdowns designed with the live setting in mind. But that foundation is constantly being pushed, stretched, and beaten into shape. Tracks like “Everblack” (feat. David Simonich) bring an immediate sense of tension, blending controlled chaos with dark, oppressive atmospheres. “Neversleep” (feat. Myke Terry) and “Crossing Nails” dive headfirst into near-deathcore brutality, driven by dissonant riffs and an unapologetic aggression that makes no attempt to be inviting.

On the other end of the spectrum, songs like “King Down,” “The Undertow” (feat. Karl Schubach), and the title track “The Weight of Sound” highlight the band’s ability to create genuine breathing room without taking the easy way out. Groove takes center stage, the dynamics are carefully crafted, and the band’s identity remains instantly recognizable. The guest appearances, featuring Jesse Leach, David Simonich, Myke Terry, Karl Schubach, and Taylor Barber, never feel tacked on; each adds a distinct shade that’s smartly woven into the album’s broader narrative.

Musicalement, l’album repose toujours sur une base metalcore solide : structures lisibles, grooves lourds, breaks pensés pour le live. Mais cette base est constamment malmenée. Des titres comme “Everblack” (feat. David Simonich) imposent une tension immédiate, mêlant chaos contrôlé et atmosphères sombres. “Neversleep” (feat. Myke Terry) ou “Crossing Nails” plongent sans détour dans une brutalité quasi deathcore, avec des riffs dissonants et une violence assumée qui ne cherche pas à séduire.

À l’inverse, des morceaux comme “King Down”, “The Undertow” (feat. Karl Schubach) ou le titre “The Weight of Sound” montrent la capacité du groupe à construire de véritables respirations, sans jamais tomber dans la facilité. Le groove y est central, les dynamiques sont travaillées, et l’identité du groupe reste immédiatement reconnaissable. Les featurings, nombreux, avec notamment Jesse Leach, David Simonich, Myke Terry, Karl Schubach et Taylor Barber, ne donnent jamais l’impression d’être là pour faire joli : chacun apporte une couleur spécifique, intégrée intelligemment dans le récit global de l’album.

One of the album’s greatest strengths lies in its ability to shift moods without ever losing cohesion. “Dystopia” (feat. Jesse Leach) plays with vocal contrasts and a heavy, almost suffocating atmosphere, while “Coma Wave” closes the record on a more open, almost soothing note, like a release of tension after a long period of compression.

That said, it isn’t flawless. On a first listen, some tracks can blur together, and the album clearly asks for time to fully reveal its nuances. But that’s also part of its appeal: The Weight of Sound isn’t a disposable record. It’s an album that settles in, that grows on you, and that gains impact with every subsequent listen.

L’une des forces du disque réside aussi dans sa capacité à varier les ambiances sans perdre en cohérence. “Dystopia” (feat. Jesse Leach) joue sur des contrastes vocaux et une atmosphère pesante, presque suffocante, tandis que “Coma Wave” vient conclure l’album sur une note plus aérienne, presque apaisée, comme une sortie de tension après un long moment de compression.

Tout n’est pas parfait pour autant. À la première écoute, certains morceaux peuvent se fondre les uns dans les autres, et l’album demande clairement du temps pour révéler toutes ses nuances. Mais c’est aussi ce qui fait sa richesse : The Weight of Sound n’est pas un disque jetable, c’est un album qui s’installe, qui s’apprivoise, et qui gagne en impact à chaque nouvelle écoute.

In the end, Crystal Lake deliver a mature, intense, and deeply sincere album, one that doesn’t aim to reinvent the genre, but instead offers a sharper, more lived-in, and profoundly human take on it. Personally, I had a great time with it: a gripping record that can be demanding at times, but always honest, and fully deserving of the time it asks from the listener.

Au final, Crystal Lake livre un album mature, intense et sincère, qui ne cherche pas à réinventer un genre mais à en proposer une version affûtée, habitée et profondément humaine. De mon côté, j’ai passé un excellent moment à l’écouter : un disque prenant, exigeant parfois, mais toujours honnête, qui justifie pleinement le temps qu’on lui accorde.
