Four years after the excellent Heavy Steps, Canadian hardcore heavyweights Comeback Kid (CBK, if we’re on a first-name basis) are back with their eighth studio album, Chosen Hell. A title that’s pretty damn ironic when you think about everything that’s been going on lately…

Anyway, enough beating around the bush. I’ve been dying to hear this record, so I’m more than happy to dive headfirst into this hell of their own choosing!

And what can I say? Right from the first few seconds, Comeback Kid makes it crystal clear what we’re in for. “Putt a Target on My Back” kicks things off with a bang: a monster rhythm section driven by Terrance Pettitt, crushing riffs that’ll have you banging your head in no time, and those melodic gang vocals that, to me, are such a huge part of the band’s signature sound.

And the fun doesn’t stop there! “Vindication” picks up right where it left off and keeps kicking our asses. Every box on my hardcore bingo card is checked: it hits hard, it’s catchy as hell, the breakdowns are absolutely filthy, and above all, it’s raw and straight from the gut. Everything I love!

This opening stretch is an absolute home run, and “Shedding Season” wraps it up while marking what feels to me like a shift in tone. Spiritbox vocalist Courtney LaPlante adds another layer of depth to Andrew Neufeld‘s vocals, especially on the chorus, without ever stealing the spotlight. It works really well, although I have to admit that throwing in a little clean singing might have taken things up another notch.

From there, the album shifts gears, taking us into “Lost and Found” and “Underneath the Pressure”. The sound becomes more modern, more atmospheric, but also a whole lot more melancholic.

Here, I’m discovering a different side of CBK than what we’re used to hearing. These emotionally charged tracks, packed with rich harmonies, actually remind me a lot of Stick to Your Guns. It’s a refreshing approach that allows the band to explore new sonic territory without losing sight of what makes them who they are.

Ces morceaux chargés d’émotion et d’harmonies me font d’ailleurs beaucoup penser à Stick to Your Guns.

But enough with the sadness, time to bring back the rage! The kind we expect from a hardcore band like Comeback Kid.

Next up is the title track, “Chosen Hell”, and holy shit, I’m losing my mind all over again! This thing hits like a fucking freight train! Pure, unrelenting power, riffs that absolutely crush, and the kind of insanely catchy chorus CBK knows how to deliver so damn well. The band is back on familiar ground, but they’re absolutely killing it.

And as if that weren’t enough, “Yesterday’s Gone” comes charging in right after. Much like the title track, it leans into that classic Comeback Kid sound, straight out of the Heavy Steps playbook. With Incendiary’s Brendan Garrone adding even more fuel to the fire, the track hits that much harder. It’s a full-on hardcore anthem, built for the stage and begging to be screamed at the top of your lungs in the middle of a pit going absolutely nuts!

I’ve been counting down the days for this album. Following up Heavy Steps was one hell of a tall order, and I’ve gotta say, I’m definitely not disappointed!

Everything that makes Comeback Kid who they are is still here, but we also get a band that’s not afraid to shake things up, try new approaches, and expand their sonic palette. They’re not reinventing the wheel, but they’re taking just enough risks to breathe some fresh life into an already killer formula.

Once again, CBK manages to channel all that rage into hard-hitting, anthemic tracks packed with the kind of raw emotion we can all relate to, each in our own way.

The Canadians prove yet again that they know how to turn sweat and fury into something fucking great. And seriously, I can’t wait to hear these songs live!

Special shoutout to “Heartland Elegy”, which already sounds like a full-blown anthem.

Milkshake Rating: 4.5/5
