I’ve been listening to Bloom since the summer of 2018, ever since Past Tense. Safe to say, this little band from Sydney, one of the rising forces in melodic hardcore, has held a special place in my heart for a while now. After the intense In Passing and their debut Maybe In Another Life, my expectations for this second full-length were sky-high, and I can say it straight up: The Light We Chase blew past them. It’s the kind of record that couldn’t have dropped at a better time, as autumn settles in, it warms you, calms you, and speaks to you. Like it’s always been there, just waiting for the right moment to find you.

J’écoute Bloom depuis l’été 2018, depuis Past Tense. Autant dire que ce petit groupe de Sydney, figure montante du hardcore mélodique, je le porte dans le coeur depuis un moment. Après l’intense In Passing et leur premier album Maybe In Another Life, j’attendais énormément de ce second long format et je peux le dire sans détour : The Light We Chase dépasse mes attentes. C’est un disque qui, en cette période automnale, semble tomber à point. Il réchauffe, il apaise, il parle. Comme s’il avait toujours été là, en attente du bon moment pour nous atteindre.

A Record of Shadows and Light

From the very first notes of Belrose, the tone is set, fragile softness, airy guitars, and then the storm hits. In under two minutes, Bloom take you by the hand and pull you straight into everything this album holds: emotion, anger, melody, nostalgia. Drummer Jack Van Vliet sums it up perfectly:

“You can’t catch light in your hands, and you can’t have darkness without the light casting its shadow. We all have an idea of something perfect, a memory, a vision of the future, a light at the end of the tunnel. The Light We Chase is that perfection.”

It’s a line that fits the very heart of the album, caught between pain and hope, between struggle and redemption.

 Un disque d’ombres et de lumière 

Dès les premières notes de Belrose, l’ambiance se pose : douceur fragile, guitare éthérée, puis la tempête. En moins de deux minutes, Bloom nous prend par la main pour nous plonger dans tout ce que cet album contient : émotion, rage, mélodie, nostalgie. Le batteur Jack Van Vliet le résume parfaitement : 

“You can’t catch light in your hands, and you can’t have darkness without the light casting its shadow. We all have an idea of something perfect, a memory, a vision of the future, a light at the end of the tunnel. The Light We Chase is that perfection.” 

Une phrase qui colle à l’essence même de l’album : entre douleur et espoir, entre la lutte et la rédemption.

The Heart of the Journey

Forget Me Not kicks things off without hesitation, classic Bloom: energetic, hard-hitting melodic hardcore. The track lands like a punch, with a crushing breakdown that unleashes every bit of pent-up rage. You can feel Jono Hawkey at his most visceral, possessed, almost at his breaking point.

Then comes Out of Reach, one of the pre-released singles. It’s everything I love about this band: that perfect balance between the violence of the screams and the sensitivity of the clean vocals. You’re caught between two opposite forces, chaos and light, just like Jono describes:

“Was this relationship worth it? Is my career everything I thought it would be? In Withered we wonder if we didn’t hope hard enough for the life we dreamed of.”

Every line feels like it’s born from deep self-reflection. And when Keep You arrives, it’s the calm after the storm, a stunningly gentle track, almost shoegaze in its texture, lifted by Patrick Miranda’s (Movements) haunting vocals. It breathes nostalgia and tenderness, leaning into an emo-punk direction that opens a new door in Bloom’s sound, much like what One Step Closer are exploring right now.

 Le coeur du voyage 

Forget Me Not démarre sans détour, typiquement Bloom : un hardcore mélodique énergique et percutant. Le morceau frappe fort, avec un breakdown brutal qui vient libérer toute la rage contenue. On sent un Jono Hawkey plus viscéral que jamais, habité, presque à bout. 

Puis vient Out of Reach, l’un des singles déjà sortis. C’est exactement ce que j’aime chez eux : cette dualité entre la violence du scream et la sensibilité du chant clair. On est pris entre deux forces contraires : le chaos et la lumière, à l’image de ce qu’évoque Jono : 

“Was this relationship worth it ? Is my career everything I thought it would be? In Withered we wonder if we didn’t hope hard enough for the life we dreamed of.” 

Chaque ligne semble venir d’une remise en question profonde. Et quand arrive Keep You, c’est le calme après la tempête. Un morceau d’une douceur incroyable, presque shoegaze, porté par la voix de Patrick Miranda (Movements). Un titre qui respire la nostalgie et la tendresse, avec une direction plus emo punk qui ouvre une nouvelle porte dans leur univers, un peu comme ce que fait One Step Closer aujourd’hui.

Between Rage, Melancholy, and Tenderness

Glen Street and Life Moves On Without Us flow seamlessly into each other. These two tracks showcase just how smart the tracklist is, natural transitions, emotional buildups, devastating breakdowns, and moments that hang in the air. It feels like living through an entire hardcore show condensed into one record. The breakdown in Glen Street hits like an emotional gut punch, brutal and beautiful all at once.

Act II, featuring Jack Bergin of Void of Vision, adds another layer of intensity. The song starts delicately, almost fragile, before Bergin’s part detonates, turning it into pure, cathartic chaos. It’s one of the record’s most powerful moments.

Then comes Withered, the first single, and arguably one of Bloom’s best songs to date. It has everything: a slow, simmering build, restrained intensity, and a final surge that hits hard. The screams and backing vocals weave together perfectly, every word weighted with emotion. You can feel that signature Bloom catharsis, the way they turn pain into light.

A Breath of Air and Nostalgia

Only Sky acts as a breather before Tongue Tied, a true emotional gem. Mikaila Delgado (Yours Truly) shares the mic with Jono, and the result is stunning. Their voices intertwine, collide, and embrace, tender, intense, and heartbreaking all at once. The music video captures that same energy, the hardness of love, separation, and longing. The album closes with Show Me Who I Am, a final look inward. After all the turmoil, you come out of it feeling at peace, like Bloom have wrapped you in their arms just to whisper, “You’re not alone.”

Entre rage, mélancolie et tendresse 

Glen Street et Life Moves On Without Us s’enchaînent parfaitement. Ces deux titres illustrent l’intelligence de la tracklist : transitions naturelles, montées d’émotions, breaks dévastateurs, moments suspendus. On a vraiment l’impression de vivre un concert de hardcore condensé en un album. Le break de Glen Street est un uppercut émotionnel, brutal et magnifique. 

Act II, avec Jack Bergin de Void of Vision, vient ajouter une dose d’intensité supplémentaire. Le morceau débute tout en finesse, puis le passage de Bergin explose, transformant le titre en un chaos libérateur. C’est l’un des moments les plus puissants du disque. 

Vient ensuite Withered, le premier single et sans doute l’un des meilleurs morceaux du groupe à ce jour. Tout y est : montée progressive, intensité retenue, puis déferlante finale. Le scream et les back vocals s’entrelacent parfaitement, chaque mot semble peser. On ressent cette catharsis propre à Bloom, cette manière de transformer la douleur en lumière. 

Un final plein d’air et de nostalgie 

Only Sky agit comme une respiration avant Tongue Tied, véritable bijou émotionnel. Mikaila Delgado (Yours Truly) y partage le micro avec Jono, et le résultat est bouleversant. Leurs voix se croisent, se heurtent, s’enlacent, c’est à la fois doux, intense et déchirant. Le clip du morceau prolonge cette atmosphère : la dureté de l’amour, la séparation, la nostalgie. Le disque se clôt sur Show Me Who I Am, un dernier regard vers l’intérieur. Après tout ce tumulte, on ressort apaisé, comme si Bloom nous avait pris dans ses bras pour nous dire : “Tu n’es pas seul.”

Conclusion: A Masterpiece of Sincerity

The Light We Chase is without a doubt Bloom’s most accomplished work to date. Sitting at the crossroads of hardcore, post-rock, and modern emo, it captures both the pain and beauty of being human with rare precision. It’s an album that lives with you, one that moves through the seasons by your side, putting words to emotions that often feel too heavy to carry alone.

As Jack Van Vliet puts it:

“The Light We Chase is our widest exploration of how far metalcore can be pushed and shaped — as lyrically diverse as it is instrumentally.”

And Jono Hawkey adds:

“We’re now at a point where we’re very confident in our sound, and we’re willing to take more risks.”

You can feel that confidence in every note. With The Light We Chase, Bloom deliver a record that’s both deeply introspective and universally resonant, a love letter to life, loss, and the light we’re all chasing, even if we never quite catch it. A necessary, honest, and profoundly human album.

Conclusion : un chef-d’oeuvre de sincérité 

The Light We Chase est sans doute l’album le plus accompli de Bloom. À la croisée du hardcore, du post-rock et de l’emo moderne, il capture la douleur et la beauté de l’humain avec une justesse rare. C’est un album qui vit avec nous, qui accompagne nos saisons, qui pose des mots sur des émotions souvent trop lourdes à porter. 

Comme le dit Jack Van Vliet : 

“The Light We Chase is our widest exploration of how far metalcore can be pushed and shaped, as lyrically diverse as it is instrumentally.” 

Et Jono Hawkey d’ajouter : 

“We’re now at a point where we’re very confident in our sound, and we’re willing to take more risks.” 

Cette confiance, on la sent à chaque note. Bloom signe ici un album à la fois introspectif et universel, un cri d’amour à la vie, à la perte, et à la lumière que l’on poursuit tous, sans jamais vraiment l’attraper. Un disque nécessaire, sincère, et profondément humain.
