A band that remains sadely underrated outside of their home country

Do we still need to introduce Biffy Clyro with the release of their tenth album? Unfortunately, yes, and that’s precisely the problem…

We’re talking about an alternative rock band with incredible stage energy, multiple awards, and headliner in the UK. Real Scottish rock kings but unfortunately, in Europe and especially in the United States, their career has never taken the same trajectory…

Despite two excellent albums released back-to-back in 2020 and 2021, this injustice, this frustration, even led them to question the band’s very existence during a chaotic end to a tour disrupted by Covid.

Simon went through a real writer’s block, which, in the spirit of “why did we even bother” (lyrics from Goodbye), even led to a break for the first time in the band’s thirty-year history (“it was too much but never enough,” he adds in Goodbye). This break lasted two years, with Simon Neil forming Empire State Bastard and the Johnson twins returning to normal life, not without difficulty for James, who fell into depression (“I’m out of reach, you’re out of bed,” Simon also wrote in Goodbye to describe this period).

Un groupe toujours malheureusement sous-coté en dehors de leurs frontières

Doit-on encore présenter Biffy Clyro à la sortie de ce dixième album ? Et bien malheureusement oui et c’est bien là le problème…

On parle pourtant d’un groupe de rock alternatif à l’énergie scénique incroyable, multi-récompensé et headliner confirmé aux UK. De véritables Rois d’Ecosse même ! Mais malheureusement en Europe et surtout aux Etats-Unis, leur carrière n’a pourtant jamais pris le même virage… Malgré encore pourtant deux excellents albums sortis coup sur coup en 2020 et 2021, cette injustice, cette frustration, va même aller jusqu’à remettre en question l’existence du groupe un soir de fin de tournée chaotique due au Covid.

Simon vivra une véritable crise d’écriture qui, dans un esprit de « why did we even bother » (paroles de Goodbye), engendrera même un break pour la première fois pour le groupe en trente ans de collaboration (« it was too much but never enough » ajoute-t-il dans Goodbye). Celui-ci va durer deux ans, Simon Neil partant former Empire State Bastard et les jumeaux Johnson retournant à la vie normale non sans mal pour James qui plongera dans la dépression (« I’am out of reach you’re out of bed » écrit Simon également dans Goodbye pour décrire cette période).

A very worrying album at first glance for fans

It is in this context that we receive this new album, and despite positive feedback on social media, as a fan, I can’t help but express my concern given their recent revelations, especially when Simon tells us that he wrote Goodbye during his Empire State Bastard detour as a farewell letter from Biffy Clyro. He even admits that in the first single, A Little Love, the lyrics “this time last year it all fell to pieces” truly refer to the band. Add to that a song about friendships that come and go, and that’s all it takes for me, as a fan, to start really panicking. Even more so, during the album’s promotion, we also learned the origin of the name Biffy Clyro, a meaning that had been kept secret until then, and whose ultimate revelation sounds almost like a farewell. So, it is full of concern that we start listening to the album for the first time…

(A quick aside to tell you the revealed origin of the band’s name: in German class, Simon, being incredibly bored, decided with a friend to create a flyer for a fake festival with made-up band names. He chose Cliff Richard, which became Cliffy Byro, then Biffy Clyro.)

Un album très inquiétant à première vue pour les fans

 C’est dans ce contexte que nous recevons ce nouvel album et malgré de bons retours sur les réseaux, le fan que je suis ne peut qu’exprimer son inquiétude face à ses révélations récentes surtout lorsque Simon nous apprend qu’il a écrit Goodbye pendant son escapade Empire State Bastard comme une lettre d’adieu de Biffy Clyro. Il admet même que dans le premier single A little love, les paroles « this time last year it all fell to pieces » parlent véritablement du groupe. Ajoutons à cela une chanson sur les amitiés qui vont et qui viennent et il n’en faut pas plus pour le fan que je suis pour commencer à vraiment paniquer. D’autant plus qu’on apprend également lors de la promotion du disque l’origine du nom Biffy Clyro, signification gardée secrète jusque-là et dont la révélation ultime sonne comme testamentaire. L’inquiétude est donc de mise à l’écoute du disque pour la première fois…

(Petit aparté pour vous raconter l’origine révélée du nom du groupe : en classe d’allemand Simon s’ennuyant à mourir décide avec un pote d’imaginer un flyer pur un faux festival avec des noms fictifs. Il choisit Cliff Richard qui devient cliffy Byro puis Biffy Clyro.)

Brotherly love as a remedy

Biffy Clyro almost came to an end, but all of that was without considering that little love, that true love, that childhood friendship that binds them together at their core. “Only love has it,” they exclaim (True Believer), and the trust in the project that they had to rediscover, at the risk of giving up everything. Through the songs, Simon Neil tells us everything he felt during this period; his writing, without any pretense, is harsh towards himself, towards others, towards us, the fans, but honest and sincere about what happened. A reckoning has been made, but he assures us that all of this is settled and behind them now. Dearest Amygdala proves it: “I’m never giving this up,” or even in Woe is Me, Woe is You: “This ship is built to last,” or “We believe in the concept.”

L’amour fraternel comme remède

Biffy Clyro est donc passé très prêt de sa fin mais voilà… Tout cela c’était sans compter sans ce little love, cet amour vrai, cette amitié d’enfance qui les unit au plus profond d’eux « only love has it » s’exclament-t-ils (True believer) et dans la confiance dans le projet qu’il a fallu qu’ils retrouvent au risque de tout lâcher. Simon Neil, au travers des chansons nous raconte tout ce qu’il a ressenti durant cette période, son écriture, sans connivence, est dure envers lui-même, envers les autres envers nous les fans mais honnête et sincère sur ce qu’il s’est passé. Un bilan a été fait mais il nous l’assure tout cela est réglé et derrière eux désormais. Dearest amygdala est là pour le prouver « i’m never give this up » ou bien encore dans Woe is me Wou is you « this ship is built to last » ou encore « we believe in the concept ».

So, what is Futique?

« Futique » (a combination of future and antique) can be defined as objects or memories from the past that comfort us, remind us who we are, and help us face the future (our Proustian madeleines, in a way).

And that’s a bit what this album is: a summary of what they’ve been doing since Only Revolutions that warms our hearts. “A Thousand and One” is reminiscent of “Biblical,” “Woe is Me, Woe is You,” and other tracks from the album “Balance, Not Symmetry.” The excellent “True Believer” is a blend of everything they’ve done since “Only Revolutions.” The album takes a nostalgic look back at Biffy Clyro‘s career, and it’s a welcome journey. Nothing to disorient the fans, although we do note some new wave and 80s influences on tracks like “Shot One” or “Dearest Amygdala,” the latter of which has a beginning reminiscent of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance.”

Futique is a fairly pop-oriented album; it doesn’t feature any tracks like “Golden Rule” or riffs as powerful as those on “A Hunger in Your Haunt” or “Denier” from their last album, but “Hunting Season” and “True Believer” are energetic tracks that should work well live. “It’s Chemical” is also a real success, a catchy track that puts you in a good mood.

Alors Futique,cest quoi ?

« Futique » (contraction de future et antique) peut être défini comme les objets ou souvenir du passé qui nous réconfortent, nous rappellent qui nous sommes et nous aident à affronter l’avenir (nos madeleines de Proust en quelque sorte).

Et c’est un peu cela cet album, c’est un condensé de ce qu’ils font depuis Only Revolutions qui nous réchauffe le coeur. A thousand and one rappelle Biblical, Woe is me wou is you, des morceaux de l’album Balance, not symmetry. L’excellent True believer un mélange de tout ce qu’ils font depuis Only Revolutions. On passe en revue de manière nostalgique la carrière de Biffy Clyro tout au long de l’album et cela nous fait du bien. Pas de quoi désorienter le fan donc même si on notera tout de même des inspirations new wave et 80’s sur Shot one ou Dearest amygdala dont le début rappelle Let’s dance de David Bowie.

Futique est un album assez pop dans la mesure où on ne trouve aucun morceau à la Golden rule ou de riffs aussi percutants que A hunger in your Haunt ou Denier comme sur le dernier album mais Hunting season et True believer sont des morceaux énergiques qui devraient tout de même bien fonctionner en live. It’s chemical est également une vraie réussite, un morceau entrainant qui met de bonne humeur.

An album to give us one last chance?

While it may not be their “last chance” album, it has everything it needs to sound like one, as Biffy Clyro has included all their most accessible elements and revisited them in the simplest and most digestible way to appeal to the widest audience.

Even if musically, they seem to revisit the band’s career with nostalgia, Biffy Clyro actually takes stock and questions itself without concessions with us, they even yell at us (“What about now son? Do you want to be forgiven for the millionth time?” (True believer). This album is a true introspection from the heart of the band that they let us witness. Disturbing at first, we ultimately come away reassured, and even if the fans of the early days will miss the grunge side and the absence of more angry tracks, we hope that with this new album they will conquer a wider audience outside the United Kingdom and finally take the place they should have occupied a long time ago.

Un disque pour nous laisser une dernière chance ?

S’il n’est pas le disque de la dernière chance, il a tout ce qu’il faut pour y ressembler tant Biffy Clyro y a mis tous ses ingrédients les plus abordables et les a revisités de la manière la plus simple et la plus digeste afin de plaire au plus grand nombre.

Même si musicalement, ils semblent revisiter la carrière du groupe avec nostalgie, Biffy Clyro fait en réalité un bilan et une remise en question sans concessions avec nous, ils nous invictent même (« What about now son ? Do you want to be forgiven for the millionth time ? » (True believer). Ce disque est une véritable introspection à cœur ouvert du groupe dont ils nous laissent être les témoins. Inquiétant dans un premier temps, on en sort au final rassuré et même si les fans des débuts regretteront le côté grunge et l’absence de morceaux plus énervés. On leur souhaite avec ce nouvel album de conquérir un plus large public en dehors du Royaume-Uni et prendre enfin la place qu’ils auraient dû occuper depuis longtemps.
