On July 11, Scottish singer Amy Macdonald officially drops her sixth studio album, Can You Hear Me?. The record features ten brand-new tracks, and we were lucky enough to get an early listen before its release.

The album kicks off with a strong dose of ‘80s-style synth on the opening track Is That What You’ve Been Waiting For. Right from the start, it sets the tone: this is a record about starting over, a story unfolds. This first song taps into that feeling of being out of place, of needing to find yourself again, to hit reset, to feel alive once more.

We move into Trapped, a track that dives into doubt and fear once you’ve taken the leap, “there’s no way back,” “tell me it will be okay.” It’s the kind of fear you have to face in order to feel free. Then comes Can You Hear Me, the title track, where the fear gives way to courage. “We are fearless, we are dreamers” sets the tone perfectly, it’s about pushing through and finding strength.

On the fourth track, I’m Done, Amy sings about cutting someone out of her life and the inner strength it takes to move on without them. She tries to let go of regrets and come to terms with it. If I had to pick a standout from the album, this would be the one. It’s the moment where Amy’s warm, emotional vocals really shine, something I had been missing a bit in the earlier tracks. The guitar melody also brings back that raw authenticity fans love about her.

L’album ouvre sur des notes de synthé très années 80 avec le titre Is That What You’ve Been Waiting For. Ce premier morceau annonce la couleur : c’est l’album du renouveau et toute une narration se déroule. Ce premier titre parle de ce sentiment de ne plus ce sentir à sa place, d’un besoin de se retrouver, de recommencer, de vivre à nouveau.

On continue avec Trapped qui évoque le doute, la peur une fois qu’on s’est lancé « there’s no way back », « tell me I twill be okay ». Une peur inévitable pour se sentir libre. « we are fearless, we are dreamers » donne le ton de Can You Hear Me, la chanson suivante, on laisse la peur de côté et on se donne le courage d’avancer.

Dans la quatrième chanson, I’m Done, Amy évoque une personne qu’elle a écarté de sa vie et le courage qu’elle se donne de continuer sans elle, elle tente d’écarter les regrets et de se faire une raison. Si je devais choisir un morceau de l’album ce serait probablement celui-là. On retrouve enfin les couleurs chaudes de la voix d’Amy qui m’avaient jusque là manquées sur le début de l’album. On retrouve une mélodie à la guitare qui nous rappelle l’authenticité tant appréciée chez cette artiste.

“It’s the hope that kills you but makes you feel alive”, that’s the opening line of the next song. It starts off soft and melancholic, with gentle piano chords before building into a more upbeat electric guitar section. It feels like a song about resilience and acceptance, one that gently pushes you forward. And that’s exactly what happens in the next track, Forward. She’s moved on, found someone new, left her problems behind, focused on the bright side, and there’s no way she’s turning back. Then things slow down again with We Survive, where doubt creeps back in. The track is filled with questions, uncertainty, and leads into One More Shot, a plea for one last chance.

Physical deals with a sense of emptiness, of something that didn’t quite work out , that lingering “we probably should’ve seen it coming” feeling. And finally, the album closes with It’s All So Long Ago, a track that slightly breaks away from the storyline. Here, Amy reflects on her teenage years, how it all began and how far she’s come. The song is soaked in nostalgia, a longing for simpler times when life was all about big dreams. But there’s also a clear break from that innocence, as if she’s saying goodbye to that version of herself for good.

« It’s the hope that kills you but makes you feel alive » ce sont les premières paroles de la chanson suivante. Elle est douce, mélancolique, en tous cas au début. Le piano laisse place à une guitare électrique, le rythme s’accélère. C’est un peu la chanson de la résilience, de l’acceptation et qui motive à aller de l’avant. C’est par ailleurs ce qu’elle fait dans la chanson suivante, Forward. Elle est passée à autre chose, elle a trouvé quelqu’un d’autre, elle écarte les problèmes de sa vie, prend le positif et ne reviendrait en arrière pour rien au monde.

Tout retombe sur We Survive, le doute reprend place, ce sont les interrogations qui dominent ce morceau pour demander une dernière chance dans One More Shot. Physical évoque un manque, un échec avec cet arrière-gout de « on aurait pu s’en douter » avant de conclure par It’s All So Long Ago dont l’histoire dénote peut-être un peu du reste de la narration. Elle évoque ses années d’adolescence, comment elle a commencé pour en être là où elle est. La chanson est emplie de nostalgie, de quand les temps étaient bien plus simples et que sa vie était pleine de rêves, mais la façon dont elle l’évoque est aussi une façon de couper avec cette innocence.

This sixth album is undeniably a narrative one, it tells a real story from beginning to end. The lyrics are heartfelt, and I think a lot of people will see themselves reflected in them. That’s where Amy Macdonald’s authenticity truly shines: she opens up to us with every step, every emotion.

Musically, though, I didn’t connect with it as much. On first listen, the songs blend together a bit, there aren’t many standout moments, and the production leans more synthetic than what we’re used to from Amy. It’s a shift that might not resonate with longtime fans looking for her usual raw, acoustic sound.

Ce sixième album est complètement un album narratif, on suit une vraie histoire. Les paroles sont touchantes et je pense que beaucoup de monde peut se reconnaitre dedans. C’est là où se trouve l’authenticité de l’artiste, elle se livre à nous à travers chaque étape, chaque émotion.

Musicalement parlant je m’y suis un peu moins retrouvée, à la première écoute on note peu de nuances, pas de morceau qui se démarque particulièrement et l’instrumentale sonne plus synthétique que ce dont on a l’habitude avec Amy MacDonald.

Still, it’s an overall enjoyable album, mellow, easy to listen to, and it flows effortlessly from start to finish. It may not be a groundbreaking record, but it’s definitely not a bad one either. It’s the kind of album that will speak to people and no doubt find its audience.

Cependant il reste un album globalement entrainant, qui reste assez doux et qui s’écoute vraiment tout seul. Ce n’est pas un album particulièrement marquant, en mon sens ce n’est pas non plus un mauvais album. C’est un album tout à fait écoutable et qui saura assurément toucher des gens et trouver son public.
