After months of waiting for fans of the idol of idols, Lee Taemin’s new album, Phase 1 : Soft Violence, was finally released on August 31, alongside the recent announcement of his upcoming world tour, <LiMiNaL>.

His last EP, Eternal, was released in 2024. His following world tour named Ephemeral Gaze was a huge success, with dozens of sold-out dates around the world, including his stop at the Zénith de Paris, which was also sold out.

This new era also comes with a radical change. In March 2026, Taemin announced his departure from Big Planet Made to join Galaxy Corp, which is known for representing one of the biggest names in the K-pop industry : G-Dragon.

This does not seem to have shaken Taemin’s artistic convictions. With this album, he remains true to the world he has shaped over the years : dark, avant-garde, and distinctive pop. He does not simply make music : he creates a fully-fledged artistic universe in which every element contributes to his concept, once again crafted down to the finest detail.

As usual, he was heavily involved in composing the songs and writing their lyrics, making this album a deeply personal one.

Après des mois d’attente pour les fans de l’idole des idoles, le nouvel album de Lee Taemin intitulé Phase 1 : Soft Violence est enfin sorti ce 31 août, en parallèle de l’annonce récente de sa tournée mondiale <LiMiNaL>.

Son dernier EP, Eternal, est sorti en 2024. La tournée qui l’accompagnait, nommée Ephemeral Gaze, avait rencontré un immense succès, avec des dizaines de dates affichant complet à travers le monde, dont notamment son passage au Zénith de Paris, lui aussi joué à guichets fermés.

Cette nouvelle ère s’accompagne également d’un changement radical. En mars 2026, Taemin annonce son départ de Big Planet Made pour rejoindre Galaxy Corp, connue notamment pour s’occuper de l’un des plus grands noms de la scène K-pop : G-Dragon.

Ce bouleversement ne semble toutefois pas avoir ébranlé les convictions artistiques de Taemin. Avec cet album, il reste fidèle à l’univers qu’il a façonné au fil des années : une pop sombre, avant-gardiste et singulière. Il ne se contente pas de faire de la musique : il conçoit un véritable univers artistique, où chaque élément participe à son concept, encore une fois pensé jusque dans les moindres détails.

Comme à son habitude, il a grandement participé à la composition des chansons et l’écriture de leurs paroles, ce qui rend cet album très personnel.

After the release of a mysterious trailer on July 22, the album was officially announced the following day. When the tracklist was revealed, it was hard to contain our excitement. Many of the songs had been performed during Taemin’s set at Coachella last April, where they met with unanimous enthusiasm from the audience, whether or not they were familiar with the artist or with a genre of music that is often unfairly dismissed.

All the trailers had conform a deeply conceptual artistic approach, continuing in the vein of Want and Criminal, rather than a shift towards a brighter, more mainstream style.

What Taemin is about to tell us is deep and painful.

The album opens with two brand-new tracks : FLOAT and Gooey. Taemin has chosen two title tracks for this album, perfectly illustrating the contrast at the heart of Soft Violence.

Après la publication d’un mystérieux trailer le 22 juillet, l’album a été officiellement annoncé le lendemain. Lorsque la tracklist a été dévoilée, difficile de contenir son enthousiasme. De nombreuses chansons ont été performées en exclusivité lors du set de Taemin à Coachella en avril dernier, et avaient fait l’unanimité auprès du public, initié ou non à cet artiste et ce genre musical souvent décrédibilisé.

Les trailers nous ont rapidement confirmé une démarche artistique profondément conceptuelle, dans la continuité de Want et Criminal, plutôt qu’un virage vers un style plus lumineux et mainstream.

Ce que Taemin s’apprête à nous raconter est profond et douloureux. 

L’album s’ouvre avec deux chansons inédites : FLOAT et Gooey. Taemin a choisi deux chansons titres pour cet album, qui illustrent parfaitement le contraste de Soft Violence.

FLOAT softly opens the album with its hypnotic and magnetic melody. Taemin describes the sensation of floating when he is in the presence of the person he loves. The music video, however, adds a darker nuance to this softness : the love he feels does not seem to be so simple. The concept of Soft is reflected in the song and its lyrics, while the Violence can be felt in the music video’s aesthetic : the loneliness, obsession, and pain that can stem from being in love.

This duality will be present throughout the entire album.

The project’s second title track, Gooey, stands in complete contrast to FLOAT. It is, without a doubt, the younger sister of The Rizzness and G.O.A.T, released in 2023 and 2024.

Here, Taemin shows his musical versatility : he is not just a singer, he can also incorporate rap into his songs to enhance them and give them greater power.

The song is not accompanied by a music video, but rather by a performance video showcasing the choreography in its entirety.

FLOAT ouvre délicatement l’album par sa mélodie hypnotisante et magnétique. Taemin décrit la sensation de flotter lorsqu’il est en présence de l’être aimé. Le clip vidéo, quant à lui, vient nuancer cette douceur : l’amour ressenti ne semble pas si simple. Le concept de Soft est rattaché à la chanson et à ses paroles, tandis que la Violence est perceptible dans l’esthétique du clip : la solitude, l’obsession et la douleur qui peuvent découler du sentiment amoureux.

Cette dualité sera représentée dans tout l’album.

Gooey, seconde chanson titre du projet, contraste totalement avec FLOAT. Elle est, sans aucun doute, la petite soeur de The Rizzness et de G.O.A.T, sorties respectivement en 2023 et 2024.

Ici, Taemin montre sa versatilité musicale : ce n’est pas seulement un chanteur, il peut également s’emparer du rap pour embellir ses chansons et leur faire gagner en puissance.

Cette chanson n’est pas accompagnée d’un clip mais d’une vidéo de performance dévoilant l’entièreté de la chorégraphie.

Gooey is the mirror song of FLOAT : the softness has been put aside, and the music is far more overwhelming. The idea of magical love is replaced by a heavy, almost uncomfortable kind of love.

Let Me Be The One, the first track on the album that listeners may already be familiar with, because it has been performed at Coachella and BST Hyde Park last summer, brings a pop-dance touch to the album. Its rhythm is infectious, and the chorus is dangerously addictive. Dance is Taemin’s natural territory, and he effortlessly draws each one of his listeners into his world.

As for Permission, whose single was released on May 22, Taemin sings about no longer allowing anyone to take control of his life and choices, and about refusing to fit to what people expect of him. Could this be a reflection of the setbacks he has faced in recent years, particularly with his former agency?

Rather than a joyful song celebrating his freedom, we are met with a track whose tension gradually builds, illustrating a path filled with obstacles.

Gooey est le miroir de FLOAT : la douceur a été mise au placard et la musique est beaucoup plus envahissante. L’idée d’amour magique est remplacée par un amour lourd et presque inconfortable. 

Let Me Be The One, premier titre de la tracklist à nous être familier puisqu’il a été performé à Coachella et au BST Hyde Park l’été dernier, est la touche pop dance de cet album. Le rythme est entraînant et le refrain dangereusement addictif. La danse étant le terrain de prédilection de Taemin, il entraînera sans difficulté chacun de ses auditeurs dans son univers.

Quant à Permission, dont le single est sorti le 22 mai dernier, Taemin y raconte qu’il n’acceptera plus qu’on prenne le contrôle de sa vie et de ses choix, et qu’il ne se conformera plus à ce que les gens attendent de lui. Cela fait-il suite aux déconvenues rencontrées ces dernières années, notamment avec son ancienne agence ?

Plutôt qu’une chanson joyeuse célébrant sa liberté, nous sommes face à un morceau dont la tension augmente progressivement, illustrant un chemin semé d’embûches.

Sober brings the tension back down with a soft and soothing melody. The song draws on drug imagery to aesthetically portray desire and attraction, along with the willingness to deliberately surrender control, a recurring theme in Taemin’s music.

1004, whose Korean pronunciation is similar to the word “angel”, follows naturally from Sober, but with a much more melancholic tone.

Following his set at Coachella, Taemin explained that he had written the song while imagining the bond he shares with his fans. The angel represents Taemin in the eyes of those who are dear to him, but also the way he sees his own audience.

Following Permission and its will of emancipation, he is no longer talking about the image he is expected to project, but about how others perceive him as who he truly is.

Easy Loving You, described as a waltz-like ballad, is the album’s most soft track. Taemin seems more vulnerable than he does on FLOAT and Gooey. He describes the journey of someone gradually coming to terms with their romantic feelings, but who does not know how to handle them and decides to simply let themselves be carried away. Taemin stops fighting against what he feels.

Sober fait retomber la tension avec une mélodie douce et apaisante. Le morceau s’appuie sur l’image de la drogue pour représenter esthétiquement le désir et l’attraction avec cette volonté de perdre le contrôle, une thématique récurrente dans la musique de Taemin.

1004, dont la prononciation en coréen est similaire à celle du mot « Ange », s’inscrit dans la continuité de Sober avec un ton beaucoup plus mélancolique.

Suite à son set à Coachella, Taemin avait expliqué que cette chanson avait été écrite en imaginant le lien qui l’unit à ses fans. L’ange représenterait Taemin dans les yeux de ceux qui lui sont chers, mais aussi la manière dont il perçoit son propre public.

Dans la continuité de Permission et de son émancipation, il ne parle plus de l’image qu’on lui impose de renvoyer, mais de la perception que les autres on de lui tel qu’il est réellement.

Easy Loving You, décrite comme une ballade à rythme de valse, est le morceau le plus tendre de l’album. Taemin semble ici plus vulnérable que dans FLOAT et Gooey. Il décrit le parcours de quelqu’un qui prend progressivement conscience des sentiments amoureux qu’il éprouve, mais qui ne sait pas comment s’y prendre, et se décide à se laisser simplement porter. Taemin cesse de lutter contre ce qu’il ressent.

SKIN, following in the footsteps of 1004 and Permission, is about renewal : Taemin is trying to shed the image that has become attached to him. With its intriguing opening seconds and prominent bassline, the track feels heavy and brings us abruptly back to reality.

The metaphor of a shedding skin is interesting : Taemin does not want to leave this image behind because it was harmful, but because it no longer fits who he is.

Both musically and lyrically, SKIN perfectly embodies the Violence side of this project.

Following his festival performances, Parasite was the most highly anticipated song. Typical of his mysterious universe, the growing tension throughout the first half of the track contrasts sharply with the final verses, where Taemin lets his anger explode. The lyrics depict someone who has latched onto him and restricted him like a parasite. Once again, we cannot help but make connections to his recent professional and personal setbacks. Taemin is determined to reclaim what was taken from him in the past.

SKIN, dans la continuité de 1004 et Permission, parle de renouveau : Taemin cherche à se débarrasser de l’image qui lui colle à la peau. Avec d’intrigantes premières secondes et une basse très marquée, le morceau est lourd et nous ramène brutalement à la réalité. 

La métaphore de la mue est intéressante : Taemin ne souhaite pas quitter cette image car elle était néfaste, mais parce qu’elle ne lui convient plus.

Autant musicalement que par les paroles, SKIN représente parfaitement le côté Violence de ce projet.

Après ses performances en festival, Parasite était de loin la chanson la plus attendue. Typique de son univers mystérieux, la tension grandissante lors de la première moitié du morceau contraste avec les derniers couplets, où Taemin laisse exploser sa colère. Les paroles évoquent quelqu’un s’étant accroché à lui et le restreignant tel un parasite. Nous ne pouvons, une nouvelle fois, qu’en tirer des interprétations liées à ses récentes déconvenues professionnelles et personnelles. Taemin est déterminé à récupérer ce qu’on lui a volé par le passé.

Frankenstein, the album’s standout ballads, comes in to soothe the heavy atmosphere created by Parasite. The song continues the introspection Taemin began earlier, leading him into a deep reflection on the construction of his artistic identity. Like the monster, he was shaped from a very young age by what people expected of him, piece by piece. Placed under the public eye and subjected to its judgment from the age of 14, he now embraces his refusal to conform to what people expect of him, or to who they want him to be. His goal is simple : to embrace his uniqueness.

This is the End closes the album on an enigmatic note. And yet, this is only the beginning, as the album’s title shows : this is only the first phase of the project. Beginning and ending coexist, echoing the personal and artistic rebirth explored throughout the album.

Frankenstein, ballade marquante de l’album, vient apaiser la lourde ambiance instaurée par Parasite. Le morceau prolonge l’introspection entamée par Taemin, qui mène ici une réflexion profonde sur la construction de son identité artistique. A l’image du monstre, il a été façonné dès son plus jeune âge par ce que les gens attendaient de lui, pièce par pièce. Placé sous le regard du public et confronté à son jugement dès ses 14 ans, il assume désormais ne plus se conformer à ses attentes, à ce que les gens voudraient qu’il soit. Son objectif est simple : revendiquer sa singularité.

This is the End clôture l’album avec une note énigmatique. Nous ne sommes pourtant qu’au début comme l’annonce le titre de l’album, qui n’est que la première phase de ce projet. Le commencement et la fin se côtoient, faisant écho à la renaissance personnelle et artistique évoquées tout au long de l’album.

The gamble has paid off. With a perfect balance between softness and brutality, Taemin once again shows his identity as a solo artist through a unique artistic endeavor, within a universe entirely his own.

Soft Violence seems to tell the story of what comes after the liberation explored in Permission : the loss of bearings, the endless cycle, the transformation. Taemin is seeking to evolve and assert his artistic identity, but also to show who he truly is, rather than the person he was forced to become during his early years as an artist, both as a soloist and as a member of SHINee. The songs do not simply follow one another randomly : the album is particularly well-written and carefully structured around this ongoing quest, which he will continue to explore in the next phase of the project.

In recent interviews, he revealed that freeing himself from other people’s gaze and expectations had contributed to improve his mental health.

Following the release of his first song entirely in English, Long Way Home, last March, as well as his appearances at several festivals around the world this summer, Taemin goes on with his ambition to expand his international reach by incorporating more English lyrics into his songs.

His European tour, <LiMiNaL>, will make several stops across Europe at the end of the year, including a date at the Adidas Arena in Paris on November 16, 2026.

Le pari est réussi. Avec un parfait équilibre entre douceur et brutalité, Taemin affirme une fois de plus son identité d’artiste solo à travers un travail artistique unique, dans un univers qui lui est propre. 

Soft Violence semble raconter ce qui se passe après la libération évoquée dans Permission : la perte de repères, la boucle sans fin, la transformation. Taemin cherche à évoluer et à affirmer son identité artistique, mais également à montrer qui il est vraiment, et non celui qu’on l’a forcé à être durant ses premières années en tant qu’artiste, que ce soit en solo ou avec son groupe SHINee. Les chansons ne s’enchaînent pas aléatoirement : l’album est particulièrement bien écrit et construit autour de cette longue quête, qu’il continuera à explorer avec la suite de ce projet.

Il a révélé dans de récentes interviews que cette émancipation du regard et des attentes des autres avait contribué à l’amélioration de sa santé mentale.

Après la sortie de sa première chanson totalement en anglais intitulée Long Way Home en mars dernier, ainsi que ses apparitions dans plusieurs festivals aux quatre coins du monde cet été, Taemin poursuit son ambition d’élargir son rayonnement à l’international en intégrant de plus en plus de paroles en anglais à ses chansons.

Sa tournée européenne <LiMiNaL> effectuera plusieurs arrêts en Europe en fin d’année, avec notamment une date à l’Adidas Arena de Paris le 16 novembre 2026.
