Final tour for Wu-Tang Clan, and their stop in the French capital is a can’t-miss event for any hip-hop fan. A legendary group and a hugely important part of music history, and the Paris crowd knows it, the arena is packed tonight. Honestly, it feels like nine out of ten people are wearing Wu-Tang merch, which is pretty wild. The average age is definitely closer to the mid-40s, but the younger generation showed up too, and that’s great to see.

Warm-up and opening act:

Tonight’s opening set is handled by DJ Mathematics, who slowly but surely gets the crowd warmed up. Cappadonna is noticeably absent tonight, but the crowd does get a special guest appearance by Mobb Deep, yeah, not bad at all.

Dernière tournée pour le Wu-Tang, et leur passage dans la capitale est l’événement à ne pas rater pour les amoureux du hip-hop. Groupe légendaire et ô combien important dans l’Histoire de la musique, le public parisien ne s’y trompe pas ce soir en étant présent en masse. Je pense que neuf personnes sur dix portent du merch du groupe, c’est assez dingue. La moyenne d’âge est plus proche de la quarantaine bien passée mais la jeune génération est présente également, et ça fait plaisir à voir.

Chauffe et première partie :

La première partie de ce soir est assurée par DJ Mathematics afin de commencer à chauffer doucement mais sûrement la salle. On notera l’absence de Cappadonna ce soir, mais bien la présence en guest exceptionnel de Mobb Deep, rien que ça ouais !

It’s just past 9 PM when the lights finally go out. The stage is hidden behind a massive curtain featuring the iconic Wu-Tang logo. The crowd can barely contain their excitement, and after an intro that probably felt endless for the most hardcore fans, the show is finally on. As the members walk out one by one, the entire arena turns into a single roaring voice, shouting and welcoming each of them properly. Years go by, but their charisma hasn’t faded one bit. From the very start, they hit hard, dropping classics from Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), no time to catch your breath, it’s hit after hit, like getting punched over and over.

Production and atmosphere:

Alongside DJ Mathematics, the group is backed by a live band and backing vocalists, which really makes a difference for a show like this. The stage setup is fairly minimal and there aren’t a ton of flashy effects (and honestly, they don’t need them), but the giant screens display visuals, archive footage, and a live feed from the show, and it works perfectly. Each act is separated by Wu-Tang-related ads… yeah, well, they’re American, it might feel a bit weird for some European fans, but we’re kind of getting used to that kind of thing by now.

Il est 21h passé lorsque les lumières s’éteignent enfin, la scène est cachée par un énorme drap orné du mythique logo, les fans n’en peuvent plus et après une Intro qui doit sembler interminable pour les fans les plus hardcore, le show peut démarrer ! Alors que les membres arrivent un à un, Bercy se transforme en une seule et même voix pour hurler et accueillir comme il se doit chaque membre. Les années passent mais le charisme des mecs ne bouge pas. Et dès le début ça kick sévère, ça balance des classiques de Enter The Wu-Tang (36 Chambers), pas le temps de comprendre qu’on se prend uppercut sur uppercut !

Production et ambiance :

Notons en plus de DJ Mathematics, la présence d’un live band et de choristes. Ça fait vraiment toute la différence selon moi, pour ce genre de show. Bien que le décor soit assez minimaliste et pas d’artifices dans tous les sens (on n’en ressent pas le besoin d’ailleurs), les écrans géants balancent des visuels, vidéos d’archives et le live de ce soir. Et ça le fait carrément. Chaque acte est entrecoupé de publicités en rapport avec le Clan… ouais bon, c’est des Américains, ça peut dérouter certains Européens, mais on commence (malheureusement ?) à se faire à ce genre de bails.

Act 2: Solo tracks and special guests

Act 2 puts the spotlight on solo material, with sets from Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Mobb Deep (and what a treat it was to see Havoc on the same stage as Wu-Tang), and the legendary Method Man, who was smiling the entire time. The energy never drops, and there’s a real connection between the crowd and the MCs. At one point, Ghostface even asked security to pass him a vinyl record a fan was holding so he could sign it. Classy move.

Acts 3 & 4: Emotions and grand finale

Act 3 focuses on solo material from GZA and Masta Killa, but also brings some emotional moments. There are tributes to Biz Markie and the late Ol’ Dirty Bastard, as well as a broader tribute to several hip-hop legends we’ve lost over the years. Ol’ Dirty Bastard is also honored through his son, Young Dirty Bastard, who absolutely delivers and makes his father proud. Just like his dad, he’s probably the most unpredictable member of the crew, at one point, he jumps into the crowd and keeps rapping right up against the front barrier, as close to the fans as possible. The show reaches its peak with timeless classics C.R.E.A.M. and Triumph. One MC after another steps up, trading verses and giving it everything they’ve got. The group and the crowd are completely in sync, and you can feel that energy exchange from start to finish over more than two hours of music.

Acte 2 : solos et guests :

L’Acte 2 fait la part belle des morceaux solo, le répertoire de Ghostface Killah, Raekwon, Mobb Deep (quel régal de voir Havoc sur la même scène que les membres du Wu-Tang !) ou encore du légendaire Method Man, tout souriant tout le long du show. L’ambiance ne s’essouffle pas et il y a une vraie communion entre le public et les rappeurs. Ghostface Killah demandera d’ailleurs à la sécu de faire passer un vinyle qu’un fan lui tend, afin de lui dédicacer. Classe.

Actes 3 & 4 : émotions et apothéose :

L’acte 3 s’occupe du répertoire solo de GZA, Masta Killa… mais aussi de moments d’émotions. Des hommages à Biz Markie ainsi que le regretté Ol’ Dirty Bastard, appuyé par un hommage aux grandes figures du hip-hop qui ont disparu. Il y aura également un hommage, forcément, au légendaire Ol’ Dirty Bastard. Son fils, Young Dirty Bastard, assure à merveille et peut rendre fier son paternel de là où il est. À l’image de son illustre père, ce dernier semble être le plus imprévisible de la bande, il décidera d’aller dans la foule et de continuer à kicker à la crash barrière, au plus proche des fans plus heureux les uns que les autres. Cet acte se terminera en apothéose avec les tubes intemporels C.R.E.A.M. et Triumph. Les MC se sont succédés, entremêlés et surtout tout donné. Le groupe était sur la même longueur d’onde que son public, et l’échange d’énergie s’est fait ressentir du début jusqu’à la fin après plus de deux heures de show.
