The crowd goes wild as the band walks onstage. The musicians quietly take their spots. The lineup is drummer Joel Amey, guitarist Joff Oddie, and bassist Theo Ellis, with a pianist joining them even though he’s not part of the core band. They’re all dressed casually. Then the singer, Ellie Rowsell, slips through the silver curtain to join them. She’s wearing a turquoise bodysuit.

The show kicks off with Thorns, and the crowd screams their heads off.
They roll right into Blue Baby Bloom, and the whole place belts out the chorus, the Wolf Alice fans definitely showed up tonight! Next up is White Horse: the drummer sings the intro, Ellie grabs a guitar to play along before diving back into the vocals. They sing the chorus together in harmony.

Then comes Formidable Cool, a seriously rock-heavy track. The pianist and drummer handle the backing vocals. Lots of shifts in the song, mellow verses and heavy, punchy choruses. It really wakes you up!
I’m clearly not the only one into it, because the crowd is losing it.
Things calm down again with Just Two Girls. The guitarist retunes during the song. The disco ball lights up and the audience erupts.

Le public jubile à l’arrivée des artistes sur scène. Les musiciens se mettent en place en silence.
La formation se compose d’un batteur Joel Amey, un guitariste Joff Oddie et un bassiste Theo Ellis. Un pianiste les accompagne également mais ne fait pas partie de la formation.  Ils sont habillés décontractés. Puis la chanteuse, Ellie Rowsell se glisse à travers le rideau d’argent pour les rejoindre. Elle porte un body bleu turquoise. Le concert démarre sur Thorns sous les hurlements des spectateurs. Enchaînement ensuite avec Blue baby bloom, la foule chante le refrain, les fans de Wolf Alice sont réunis ce soir !

Ensuite démarre White horse, le batteur chante l’intro, la chanteuse sort une guitare et l’accompagne avant de reprendre le chant. Ils chantent le refrain en chœur. S’ensuit Formidable cool, un morceau très rock . Le pianiste et le batteur font les chœurs. Beaucoup de modulations dans cette chanson, les couplets sont calmes et les refrains bien heavy. Ça réveille ! Je ne suis pas la seule à apprécier puisque le public les encense. Retour au calme avec Just two girls. Le guitariste se réaccorde pendant le morceau. La boule disco s’illumine et déclenche les cris du public.

For Leaning Against the Wall, the guitarist pulls out an acoustic-electric. The whole stage goes dark, and a soft pink spotlight falls on the singer. It’s a gorgeous, dreamy song that gently sweeps you away, you feel like you’re drifting, light and weightless. Then something weird happens: the music cuts out all of a sudden and the stage blacks out, then comes back on for a second, cuts again, comes back… It snaps us out of that dreamlike state pretty abruptly.

During How Can I Make It OK?, bassist Theo gets the crowd to sing along on every chorus. Everyone joins in happily, and it’s one of my favorite songs.
Then the first notes of The Sofa ring out on the acoustic-electric, and the audience immediately sings the chorus (I’ve got tears in my eyes). Everyone waves their arms side to side, from the front of the pit all the way to the top rows, it’s beautiful and moving to feel that, just for a moment, all these people are completely in sync. Theo congratulates the crowd for being so responsive since the beginning.

For Bros, Ellie grabs a Lespaul, and the crowd screams as soon as they hear the opening notes, then sings along word for word the entire time!
Massive applause at the end. Joff, the guitarist, motions for the crowd to clap as You’re a Germ kicks in, and everyone jumps in. It’s a heavy track, and Ellie keeps her Les Paul but switches to a more saturated tone. Safe From Heartbreak (If You Never Fall in Love) is played acoustically. The drummer and pianist stand at the back of the stage, harmonizing with Ellie. The bassist, holding an acoustic bass, sits on the edge of the drum platform; the guitarist faces him with an acoustic-electric.
Safe in the World brings another calm moment, with the drummer singing deep harmonies.

Pour Leaning against the wall, le guitariste sort une électroacoustique. La scene est plongée dans le noir, un spot rose éclaire la chanteuse. Magnifique musique qui nous transporte avec douceur. on semble voyager, léger et fluide.
Très étrange, à la fin la musique se coupe subitement et la scène s’éteint, puis redémarre une seconde, s’éteint à nouveau, redémarre… On est coupé un peu brutalement du transport de cette musique onirique.

How can I make it ok ?, le bassiste Theo invite le public a chanter a chaque refrain. Le public participe avec bonheur, et c’est une de mes chansons préférées. Puis les premières notes de The sofa résonnent à la guitare électroacoustique, les spectateurs chantent le refrain spontanément (j’ai les larmes aux yeux).

Tout le monde agite les bras de gauche à droite, de l’avant de la fosse jusqu’en haut des gradins, c’est beau et émouvant de sentir que l’espace d’un instant, tous ces humains ne font qu’un. Le bassiste félicite le public d’être si réactif depuis le début. Pour Bros, la chanteuse prend une guitare Lespaul, le public crie en entendant les premières notes puis chante en chœur les paroles tout le long ! Le public applaudit avec vigueur à la fin du morceau.

Joff le guitariste fait signe à la foule d’applaudir lorsque You’re a germ démarre, et tout le monde s’y met. Musique bien heavy, la chanteuse a gardé sa Lespaul mais avec un son saturé cette fois-ci. Safe From Heartbreak (If You Never Fall in Love) est joué en acoustique. Le batteur et le pianiste sont debout en fond de scène et accompagnent la chanteuse en harmonie. Le bassiste avec une basse acoustique est assis sur le bord de la plateforme batterie, le guitariste est face à lui avec une guitare électroacoustique. Safe in the world, encore un moment calme, le batteur chante en harmonies graves.

Ellie turns her back to the crowd as Bread Butter Tea Sugar begins. A star-shaped spotlight hits her and spreads across the silver curtain, her shadow right in the center. The beat makes you want to stomp your foot. There’s an a cappella break during the bridge, then the energy kicks back in. Ellie strikes playful, sultry poses in front of the fan and the crowd goes wild!
A blast of guitar distortion rings out, joined by siren noises from a megaphone she’s holding. Then Yuk Foo explodes into action! She screams into the megaphone, the whole thing is loud, gritty, pure punk energy. They dive straight into Play the Greatest Hits with the same intensity. The pianist has a huge grin on his face, you can tell the whole band is having the time of their lives, and it’s contagious.

Sixteenth song in, I recognize the intro. It’s Silk, one of my favorites! Smoke spills across the stage. Once again we’re pulled into that dreamy atmosphere, like floating underwater (yep, Wolf Alice really can transport you to another reality!). For Play It Out, Ellie sits on a stool under soft, dim lighting, a gentle piano-and-vocals intro, then the bass joins in slowly. The guitarist gets the crowd clapping, and then a heavy rock riff kicks off Giant Peach. He makes the guitar scream with distortion. More clapping during the bridge, Ellie builds the tension… and wait, are those head-bangs happening when the massive riff drops?? The song ends in a wave of distortion and roaring applause.

The band jumps straight into Smile without a break, another high-energy one! Green lights flood the stage, Ellie’s switched to a Gibson SG, and the crowd sings along to the chorus. They walk offstage, leaving a guitar droning in feedback through the amps. The crowd screams and cheers, whistles echo, and the stands shake under people stomping. A chant rises: “One more! One more!

Ellie tourne le dos à la foule lorsque commence Bread butter tea sugar, un spot en forme d’étoile l’éclaire et se projette sur le rideau argenté, son ombre au centre. Le rythme donne envie de taper du pied. Passage a capela lors du pont du morceau, puis l’énergie redémarre , la chanteuse prend des poses lascives face au ventilo et le public pousse des cris !

Une saturation de guitare résonne, rejoint par les bruits de sirène venant d’un mégaphone tenu par la chanteuse . Puis le départ de Yuk foo est explosif ! Elle crie dans le mégaphone. La musique envoie du lourd, ambiance punk. Enchaînement avec Play the greatest hits dans la même énergie. Le pianiste arbore un grand sourire, on sent vraiment que les musiciens s’éclatent sur scène et c’est communicatif ! 16ème je reconnais l’intro, c’est Silk, une de mes préférées ! La fumée se répand sur scène.

Encore une ambiance planante, on s’imagine flotter dans l’eau (et oui, wolf alice arrive à vous transporter dans un univers parallèle !) Pour Play it out, la chanteuse s’assoit sur un tabouret, lumière tamisée, intro piano voix, rejoint ensuite par la basse en douceur. Le guitariste invite le public à clapper, puis un riff bien rock s’entame pour Giant peach. Il fait crier la guitare avec la saturation . Claps lors du pont, Ellie fait monter la pression . Mais que vois-je, des headbangs sur le riff bien lourd qui suit ?? Fin du morceau sous la saturation et les acclamations du public.

Le groupe enchaîne sans pause avec Smile, encore une bien énervée! Lumières vertes sur scène, la chanteuse a repris une guitare Gibson SG, le public chante le refrain. Le groupe quitte la scène en laissant une guitare saturer les amplis. Le public hurle et applaudit, sifflements, le gradin fait trembler avec ses pieds Clap de rappel « Une autre, une autre ! »

Ellie starts singing Don’t Delete the Kisses and the crowd immediately joins in. The bassist wiggles around center stage, making Ellie laugh, and she walks over to him. The last line of the song is sung a cappella, the crowd singing right along.
The members of Wolf Alice thank the audience, then walk offstage.The crowd was insanely active the entire show, between songs, during songs, from the very front of the pit all the way up to the back row. I’ve rarely seen an audience this engaged from start to finish!

Honestly, plenty of ‘bigger’ bands would be jealous.
There was also a really nice mix of people, great gender balance and ages ranging anywhere from about 18 to 60. Overall, the setlist was a perfect blend: one soft song, one rock song, back and forth, enough to keep us from drifting off but not completely blowing our heads off either, haha.

Ellie commence à entonner Don’t delete the kisses et le public la rejoint. Le bassiste se dandine au centre de la scène, faisant rire la chanteuse qui le rejoint. La dernière phrase du morceau est chantée a capella, le public chante.  La formation de Wolf Alice remercie le public puis les musiciens quittent la scène. Le public était extrêmement actif tout le long du concert et entre les morceaux, j’ai rarement vu un public qui interagit autant tout le long du concert sur chaque chanson, de l’avant de la fosse jusqu’au fond des gradins !

Il y a de quoi rendre jaloux pas mal de groupes bien plus “célèbres” ! On notera une belle parité dans le public, avec également des âges très différents (de 18 à 60 ans). Globalement la setlist c’est souvent une chanson «douce » puis une rock, puis une douce, puis une rock, pour être sûrs qu’on ne s’endorme pas sans trop s’énerver non plus haha.

And I’ve got to give huge props to the drummer for singing and doing backing vocals almost the whole night. That’s some serious stamina! A Wolf Alice show pulls you straight into their world, with a crowd that dives in happily.
It’s the kind of night where you feel connected, forgetting everyday worries for a little while.

Je ne peux que saluer la performance du batteur qui chante et fait les chœurs quasi tout au long du concert, quelle endurance ! Wolf Alice c’est un concert qui vous transporte dans leur monde, et un public qui participe avec joie. Une expérience vraiment agréable où l’on se sent unis, en oubliant les tracas du quotidien l’espace d’une soirée.
