Saturday, July 20th at 7:55 PM, I’m boarding a plane to Athens! The excitement is tangible as I’m about to embark on a one-of-a-kind adventure. At 11 PM, just as I step onto the streets of Athens, I’m hit by a stifling heat, a preview of the days to come. I’m here for The Ejekt Festival in Athens , and the scorching atmosphere is already setting the mood.

On July 21st, we decide to go to the beach, but since I tend to get bored quickly, we end up exploring the city. Athens is vast and fascinating, and we discover many of its hidden gems before settling into a bar to sip on refreshing cocktails. The evening wraps up with a delicious meal before heading back to our place.

The Ejekt Festival in Athens , though internationally renowned, stands out for its intimate and personable atmosphere. Unlike other large festivals, Ejekt offers a more personal and warm experience, making each moment special for the festival-goers.

Upon our arrival, the welcome is remarkably generous and royal: brand representatives offer us all sorts of goodies, drinks, and ice creams. The festival places a strong emphasis on ensuring the comfort and respect of all participants. The facilities are designed to be accessible and respectful of diversity. For example, the restrooms are individual and non-gendered, offering both seated and standing options, an attention to detail that demonstrates a commitment to meeting everyone’s needs.

What strikes you from the first moments at the festival is the respect and kindness of the Greeks. Despite the high temperatures that encourage very light clothing, there isn’t a single malicious or inappropriate look. The atmosphere is relaxed and safe, allowing everyone to fully enjoy the event without any worries.

The Greeks, known for their hospitality, are even more welcoming here. Interactions with locals and other festival-goers are always courteous and respectful. Whether in line, at the concerts, or in the relaxation areas, the ambiance is friendly and amiable.

Le Ejekt Festival à Athènes, bien que de renommée internationale, se distingue par sa taille humaine et son ambiance intimiste. Contrairement à d’autres grands festivals, Ejekt offre une expérience plus personnelle et chaleureuse, rendant chaque moment plus spécial pour les festivaliers.

Dès notre arrivée, l’accueil est remarquablement généreux et royal : des représentants de marques nous offrent toutes sortes de goodies, boissons, et glaces. Le festival met un point d’honneur à assurer le confort et le respect de tous les participants. Les infrastructures sont pensées pour être accessibles et respectueuses de la diversité. Les toilettes, par exemple, sont individuelles et non mixtes, offrant systématiquement la possibilité de s’asseoir ou d’être debout, une attention qui démontre une volonté de répondre aux besoins de chacun.

Ce qui frappe dès les premiers instants au festival, c’est le respect et la bienveillance des Grecs. Malgré les températures élevées qui incitent à porter des tenues très légères, pas un seul regard malveillant ou déplacé n’est à signaler. L’atmosphère est décontractée et sûre, permettant à chacun de profiter pleinement de l’événement sans aucune inquiétude.

Les Grecs, connus pour leur hospitalité, se montrent ici encore plus accueillants. Les échanges avec les locaux et autres festivaliers sont toujours empreints de courtoisie et de respect. Que ce soit dans la file d’attente, lors des concerts ou dans les espaces de détente, l’ambiance est conviviale et amicale.

The first band to take the stage is Planet Of Zeus, hailing from Athens. They kick off with “Vanity Suit”, and the supportive crowd goes wild. I enthusiastically discover their tracks “Loyal to the Pack” and “Them Nights”. They finish with the excellent “Vigilante”, and I’m already hooked.

Next up is Loathe, a British heavy metal band I had been eagerly anticipating. Their set begins with “Gored”, and the energy level spikes. Kadeem, the singer, keeps thanking the crowd and even ends up shirtless under the intense heat. During “I Let It In and It Took Everything…”, he checks on our well-being. The audience appreciates his concern and eagerly responds to his call for a circle pit during “Heavy Is the Head That Falls With the Weight of a Thousand Thoughts”. The heat is intense, but it doesn’t dampen the fans’ enthusiasm.

The Greeks are daring and likely accustomed to such conditions, which explains their boundless energy.

Additionally, the scorching asphalt surely motivates movement, as you can feel the heat through your soles.

All in all, for me, this was musically the best set of the day.

Ensuite, c’est au tour de Loathe, un groupe de Heavy métal britannique que j’attendais avec impatience. Leur set débute avec “Gored” et l’énergie monte d’un cran. Kadeem, le chanteur, remercie sans cesse le public et finit même torse nu sous la chaleur écrasante. Sur “I Let It In and It Took Everything…”, il s’inquiète de notre bien-être. Le public est ravi de sa sollicitude et répond présent à son appel pour un circle pit sur “Heavy Is the Head That Falls With the Weight Of a Thousand Thoughts”. La chaleur est intense, mais cela ne freine pas l’enthousiasme des fans.

Les grecs sont téméraires et ont sûrement l’habitude , ceci explique sûrement leur énergie folle.

Ceci étant dit, la semelle statique sur le bitume brûlant explique sûrement également l’envie de bouger, car on sent bien la chaleur sous la voûte plantaire.

Bref pour moi, musicalement ce sera le meilleur set de la journée.

As soon as Spiritbox starts with “Cellar Door”, there’s some headbanging in the pit, but it remains relatively calm.

Courtney (vocals) sports a “God’s Favorite” t-shirt and flirts a lot on stage. Interestingly, she leaves the stage between each song, which I find puzzling.

Despite the vocal effects sometimes making the lyrics hard to understand, tracks like “The Void” and “Secret Garden” resonate with the crowd. A fan shows off “Courtney” written on his chest, clearly thrilled. Before “Hysteria,” Courtney thanks the audience and the other bands, marking their first performance here at The Ejekt Festival in Athens.

Courtney (chant) arbore un tee shirt « god’s favorite » elle minaude beaucoup sur scène quand elle y est, en effet entre chaque morceau elle sort de scène et j’avoue ne pas comprendre le principe. 

Les titres “The Void” et “Secret Garden” résonnent malgré les effets vocaux qui rendent parfois les paroles difficilement compréhensibles. Un fan montre “Courtney” écrit sur son torse, visiblement aux anges. Avant “Hysteria”, Courtney remercie le public et les autres groupes, marquant leur première prestation ici, au Ejekt Festival d’Athenes.

Finally, Korn, a band with nothing left to prove and who hadn’t played in Athens since 2013 (when they performed with Asking Alexandria—what a lineup!), had the crowd salivating in anticipation. They took the stage half an hour late, but it was worth the wait.

From the moment they launched into “Rotting in Vain”, the crowd went wild. The stage setup, featuring grids projecting images, was impressive.

During “Clown,” a huge circle pit formed. We, who were at the front of the pit, got pushed back like bales of hay. The Greek pits are quite endearing, mainly consisting of jumping, which made it easy for us to move back to the front of the stage. Korn played hit after hit, including “Blind”, “Coming Undone” (mixed with Queen’s “We Will Rock You”), and “Shoots and Ladders” with a Metallica cover (a cover better than Metallica’s own performance at Hellfest, according to my friend Typhaine who was with me).

Then Jonathan Davis (vocals) shouted, “Atheeeeens! So good to play here!!! We’re celebrating our fucking 30-year career, it’s crazy. Thank you guys so much for being here. It’s only our second time playing in Athens, so make some noise!!!! I want to see all the middle fingers in the air. Fuckers!!!!”

They ended with “Freak on a Leash”, leaving the audience in a state of hysteria.

Enfin, Korn, ce groupe qui n’a plus rien à prouver et qui n’était pas venu à Athènes depuis 2013, date où ils étaient accompagnés de Asking Alexandria (quelle affiche!!!) fait saliver le public, en effet ils montent sur scène avec une demi heure de retard.

L’attente en valait la peine : dès “Rotting in Vain”, la foule est en délire. La mise en scène avec des grilles projetant des images est impressionnante. 

Sur le titre « Clown » un gros circle pit se forme, nous qui étions à l’avant de la fosse on se retrouve projeté plus en arrière tel des ballots de pailles. Les pits grecs sont vraiment très mignons, ils consistent d’avantage à sauter qu’autre chose, ce qui nous rend facile la tâche de traverser cette fosse pour de nouveau rejoindre le devant de la scène. Korn enchaîne les hits comme “Blind”, “Coming Undone” (mélangé à “We Will Rock You” de Queen), et “Shoots and Ladders” avec une reprise de Metallica  (reprise qui sera meilleure que la version exécuté par Metallica eux même lors du Hellfest festival, pour citer mon amie Typhaine qui m’accompagne).

Puis Jonathan Davis (chant) nous crie « Atheeeeeens! So good to play here!!! On célèbres nos putain de 30 ans de carrière, c’est fou, thank you guys so much to be here, c’est la seconde fois qu’on joue à Athènes alors faites du bruit!!!! Je veux voir tous les middle fingers en l’air. Fuckers!!!! 

Ils terminent sur “Freak on a Leash”, laissant le public en état d’hystérie.

On July 23rd, the day begins gently with the Athenian indie rock band Bonnie Nettles. It’s a new discovery for me, as their style isn’t what I typically listen to. However, their delicate sound gently awakens the audience, providing a welcome moment of tranquility before the intensity of the performances to come.

Next up is Alice Merton, the German-Canadian pop singer-songwriter. She opens her set with “Run Away Girl” and follows with “Hit the Ground Running”, dedicated to everyone in her life. She invites the audience to sing along, creating a participatory and warm atmosphere. She continues with tracks like “Mania” and “No Roots”, and finishes with “The Other Side”. Alice expresses her joy at being in this beautiful city at The Ejekt Festival in Athens and thanks the audience and the festival for their warm welcome.

Next up is Palaye Royale, ready to ignite the crowd with their unique style. From the first chords of “Little Bastards”, the energy is palpable. Charismatic lead singer Remington Leith sports a “Blondie” t-shirt, while the rest of the band sports a dandy look that contrasts with their explosive rock sound.

Remington quickly establishes a connection with the audience. During “You’ll Be Fine”, he shares that it’s the last date of their tour, yet there’s no sign of fatigue.

He comes down to the barrier, getting close to his fans, which elicits enthusiastic cheers. Sebastian (guitar), inspired by the energetic atmosphere, joins him in the crowd during the next song.

The band continues with “Showbiz,” a powerful track that prompts me to step away from the pit and head to the Jack Daniels truck, where I meet the friendly staff. We move to the rhythm of the music, enjoying the camaraderie and drinks.

The emotion peaks during “Lonely.” Remington accompanies himself on the piano, and the combination of his melancholic voice and the soft chords overwhelms me. Whether it’s the music, the alcohol, or both, the moment is magical. The performance takes an unexpected turn when he finishes the song in an inflatable boat carried by the crowd, dousing the audience with a water gun. The playful and refreshing gesture is joyfully received by the spectators.

The final track, “Mr. Doctor Man”, is the climax of their set. Remington expresses how it’s a “fucking honor” to play here and how much he loves the Greek audience. He climbs the stage scaffold for a better view, while Sebastian leaps into the pit, splitting the crowd in two. The energy is at its peak, and the audience is utterly captivated by this spectacular finale.

Il descend à la crash barrière, se rapprochant de ses fans, un geste qui suscite des cris d’enthousiasme. Sebastian (guitare), inspiré par l’énergie ambiante, le suit lors de la chanson suivante, se lançant lui aussi dans la foule.

Le groupe continue avec “Showbiz”, un morceau puissant qui me pousse à m’éloigner de la fosse pour rejoindre le camion Jack Daniels où j’ai fait la connaissance du personnel, tous adorables. Ensemble, nous bougeons en rythme avec la musique, profitant de la convivialité et des boissons.

L’émotion atteint son paroxysme sur “Lonely”. Remington s’accompagne au piano, et la combinaison de sa voix mélancolique et des accords doux me submerge. Est-ce la musique, l’alcool ou les deux qui provoquent cette vague d’émotion ? Peu importe, le moment est magique. La performance prend une tournure inattendue lorsqu’il finit la chanson dans un bateau gonflable porté par la foule, arrosant le public avec un pistolet à eau. Le geste, à la fois ludique et rafraîchissant, est accueilli avec joie par les spectateurs.

Le dernier titre, “Mr. Doctor Man”, est l’apothéose de leur set. Remington exprime à quel point c’est un “putain d’honneur” de jouer ici et qu’il aime le public grec. Il escalade l’échafaudage de la scène pour avoir une vue d’ensemble, tandis que Sebastian se jette dans la fosse, séparant la foule en deux. L’énergie est à son comble, et le public est complètement captivé par ce final spectaculaire.

The day ends with Maneskin, the Italian rock band that ignites euphoria from their first track, “Don’t Wanna Sleep”. It’s a new discovery for me; although friends had mentioned them, I hadn’t been particularly intrigued. Their live performance changes that. The crowd claps and sings along with every song, clearly showing that many people came especially for them.

Damiano, the lead singer, expresses his joy at being there, eliciting cheers from the crowd. “Supermodel” feels almost like an anthem, and the band’s authenticity shines through despite their fame. They continue with “For Your Love” and “Kool Kids”, even inviting some of the audience on stage. The set concludes with an encore of “The Loneliest” and “I Wanna Be Your Slave”, wrapping up a memorable day and evening on the second day of the Ejekt festival in Athens.

La journée se termine avec Maneskin, le groupe de rock italien qui déclenche l’euphorie dès leur premier titre “Don’t Wanna Sleep”. C’est une découverte pour moi; bien que des amis m’en aient parlé, je n’avais jamais été particulièrement intriguée. Leur performance live change la donne. Le public tape des mains et chante chaque chanson, montrant clairement que beaucoup sont venus spécialement pour eux. Damiano, le chanteur, exprime sa joie d’être ici, déclenchant des cris de plaisir dans la foule.

“Supermodel” semble presque être un hymne, et l’authenticité du groupe transparaît malgré leur popularité. July 24th starts under a blazing sun as we arrive at the festival site at 4:30 PM, eager for another day of music. The gates open at 5:00 PM, but due to the crowd and security checks, we only manage to get in at 6:30 PM. Two hours of waiting in the sweltering heat felt like an Olympic challenge!

By the time we get in, unfortunately, Six for Nine’s set is coming to an end. I’m a bit disappointed to miss this band, especially since the one song I did catch had an incredible energy.

Le 24 juillet commence sous un soleil de plomb alors que nous arrivons sur le site du festival à 16h30, impatients de vivre une nouvelle journée de musique. Les portes s’ouvrent à 17h, mais à cause de l’affluence et des contrôles, nous ne parvenons à entrer qu’à 18h30. Deux heures d’attente sous une chaleur écrasante, c’était digne d’une épreuve olympique !

À notre arrivée, le set de Six for Nine touche malheureusement à sa fin. Je suis un peu déçue de manquer ce groupe, d’autant plus que la seule chanson que j’ai pu entendre dégageait une énergie incroyable.

The British Bury Tomorrow kicks off their set with “The Seventh Sun”. By the second track, “Abandon Us”, a circle pit forms despite the 38-degree heat. Lead singer Dani Winter-Bates jokes that they’ve just come from Finland, where the pits are much larger, calling the ones at The Ejekt Festival in Athens “baby circle pits.” He also mentions Bring Me The Horizon will be performing later, encouraging the audience to train and move more.

A technical issue causes a five-minute delay before the next song, but it doesn’t dampen the enthusiasm of the band or the crowd, who remain ready to rock. Dani thanks us for our patience. During “Cannibal,” a general jump ignites the crowd. Before “Black Flame”, Dani asks to see a real pit, sparking the first slam of the day.

For the final track, “DEATH,” Dani pumps us up, saying: “We saw BMTH backstage, and they’re fired up. You need to be too—move more, damn it, this is your moment, sing with me!” The crowd responds with enthusiasm, wrapping up a memorable set.

Les britanniques Bury Tomorrow ouvre leur set avec “The Seventh Sun”. Dès le deuxième titre, “Abandon Us”, un circle pit se forme malgré les 38 degrés. Le chanteur Dani Winter-Bates plaisante en disant qu’ils reviennent de Finlande et qu’ici au Ejekt festival d’Athènes, ce sont des “bébés circle pits”. Il mentionne aussi la présence de Bring Me The Horizon ce soir, incitant le public à s’entraîner et à bouger davantage comme pour s’entrainer.

Un problème technique survient avant le titre suivant, provoquant une interruption de cinq minutes. Cela n’entame en rien l’enthousiasme du groupe ni celui du public, qui reste prêt à en découdre. Dani nous remercie pour notre patience. Sur “Cannibal”, un jump général enflamme la foule. Avant de jouer “Black Flame”, Dani demande à voir un vrai pit, ce qui déclenche le premier slam de la journée.

Pour le dernier titre “DEATH”, Dani nous motive en disant : “On a vu BMTH en backstage, ils sont à bloc. Vous devez l’être aussi, bougez plus putain, c’est votre moment, chantez avec moi !” Le public répond avec enthousiasme, clôturant ainsi un set mémorable!

The British pop-punk band Neck Deep starts their set with “Dumbstruck Dumbfuck,” brimming with energy. During “Sort Yourself Out”, I feel rejuvenated, as if I’m a teenager again. Lead singer Ben Barlow engages frequently with the audience. Aware that we’re all here for Bring Me The Horizon, and despite the 34-degree heat, he encourages us to move. The pit springs to life without hesitation.

Before “Kali Ma”, Ben delivers a political message, addressing global economic struggles and celebrating the solidarity and strength of the punk community. He declares, “We are punk! Moshpit!” During “Take Me With You”, he asks if we’re ready for BMTH and mentions that Neck Deep has been around for 12 years. They’re thrilled to be here at The Ejekt festival in Athens for the first time and are curious to see how the French will react to their Paris show the next day.

The set wraps up with “In Bloom”. Ben warmly thanks the Ejekt Festival, bows to the audience, and toasts with us as the crowd enjoys numerous slams.

La fosse s’active sans hésitation.

Avant “Kali Ma”, Ben partage un message politique, évoquant les difficultés économiques mondiales et célébrant la solidarité et la force de la communauté punk. Il déclare : “Nous sommes punk ! Moshpit !”. Sur “Take Me With You”, il demande si nous sommes prêts pour BMTH et mentionne que Neck Deep existe depuis 12 ans. Ils sont heureux d’être ici au Ejekt festival d’Athènes pour la première fois et curieux de voir comment les Français réagiront le lendemain pour leur concert à Paris.

Le set se termine par “In Bloom”, Ben remercie chaleureusement le Ejekt Festival, s’incline devant le public et trinque avec nous, alors que de nombreux slams animent la foule.

Needless to say, I was eagerly anticipating this moment. I’ve written extensively about Bring Me The Horizon, their albums, and their concerts, so this time, I decided to simply enjoy the show without taking notes.

Hailing from Sheffield, this band never disappoints. Their performance lives up to expectations with flames, pyrotechnics, smoke, and screens displaying stunning visuals. The energy of the band, led by their charismatic frontman Oliver Sykes, is contagious. They deliver 17 songs in a set that is both generous and intense.

They kick off with “Darkside,” accompanied by the roar of the crowd. As the songs progress, I move closer to the stage, swept up by the excitement and joy of being here. “Top 10 Statues That Cried Blood”, from their new album, is a standout track that sparks general euphoria. We scream and dance as if it’s the last time, the lyrics making us acutely aware of how precious time is.

A memorable moment occurs after “Kingslayer” when a fan collapses. Oli pauses the show to ensure the fan receives help and takes the opportunity to chat with the audience, reading signs that trigger a Greek chant: “British guys are crazy.”

During “Drown,” Oliver sings at the barrier as usual, then reappears on stage wearing cat ears—a gift from a fan that he proudly sports. On “Antivist,” a Greek fan joins Oli on stage to share the song, and the chemistry is perfect both vocally and personally. Bring Me The Horizon embodies sharing, sincerity, and authenticity!

“Can You Feel My Heart” and “Doomed” bring tears of emotion to the crowd. The set concludes with “Throne,” the final chance to give it all. The audience is in a frenzy with more than seven simultaneous circle pits, proving that Greeks can really go for it when they want to.

The applause continues after the set ends. Oli, remaining on stage with a smile and visibly moved, gestures hearts with his hands before leaving to cheers.

Un moment marquant survient après “Kingslayer” : un(e) fan fait un malaise et Oli interrompt le show pour assurer sa prise en charge. Il en profite pour discuter avec le public et lire les pancartes, ce qui déclenche un chant grec : “British guys are crazy“.

Lors de “Drown”, Oliver chante à la crash barrière comme à son habitude, puis réapparaît sur scène avec des oreilles de chat, cadeau d’un fan qu’il porte fièrement. Sur “Antivist”, un fan grec monte sur scène pour partager le titre avec Oli, et l’alchimie est parfaite tant vocalement que humainement. Bring me The Horizon c’est aussi et surtout ça, du partage, de la sincérité de l’authenticité! 

“Can You Feel My Heart” et “Doomed” suscitent des larmes d’émotion parmi le public. Le set se conclut avec “Throne”, dernière occasion de tout donner. Le public est en pleine effervescence avec plus de sept circle pits simultanés, prouvant que les Grecs peuvent se battre quand ils le veulent.

Les applaudissements ne cessent pas après la fin du set. Oli, resté sur scène, sourire aux lèvres et visiblement ému, adresse des cœurs avec les mains avant de s’en aller sous les acclamations.
