Last night, right in the heart of Paris’s 18th arrondissement, Backstage By the Mill was packed, or nearly sold out, to welcome Sweet Pill and Movements, two bands with very different vibes but perfectly matched energy. The Paris crowd, loyal and absolutely fired up, showed up in full force for a night that’s bound to stick in everyone’s memory.

Hier soir, au cœur du 18e arrondissement, la salle du Backstage By the Mill affichait complet ou presque pour accueillir Sweet Pill et Movements, deux groupes aux univers bien distincts mais à l’énergie complémentaire. Le public parisien, fidèle et en feu, a répondu présent pour une date qui restera marquée dans les esprits.

Sweet Pill: A Killer Opening Set

Sweet Pill, hailing from Philadelphia, kicked things off in style. Formed in 2019, the band has been steadily making a name for themselves in the emo/indie rock scene, and in Paris, they delivered a short but punchy set that hit all the right notes. Opening with “Where the Heart Is” in an already packed room, they struck a fine balance between tenderness and raw energy. The applause came fast and loud.

By the second song, the vibe was set. Lead singer Zayna Youssef held out the mic, and the crowd screamed the lyrics back at her. On stage, the two guitarists shared a tender kiss, a small but genuine moment of connection that echoed through their performance.

Zayna, full of charisma, shouted: “We are Sweet Pill and we love you!” while the guitarist stunned the crowd with a killer vocal performance. The whole room swayed along to “Glow” before the band thanked the crowd warmly: “What’s up Paris, thank you for being here, we are very excited so let’s have fun!”

During “Chewed Up”, the male vocals kicked in and brought a new level of intensity. The band even tried out some French with an adorable accent, earning big cheers and rhythmic claps from the crowd.

A few songs in, Zayna asked:

“You ready for Movements??? Yessss!”

Then added how honored they were to be opening: “We were honestly so happy and shocked when we found out we got this support slot. We’re super grateful!”

There was a selfie with the crowd “You’re all beautiful, I’m showing this to my mom!”, barking during “Dog Song” (yep, why not!), and finally “Cut”, which sparked the first crowdsurf of the night.

The crowd gave Sweet Pill the love they deserved at the end. A refreshing, heartfelt, and fun opening act, the perfect way to start the night.

Sweet Pill : une première partie qui claque

Sweet Pill, originaire de Philadelphie, ouvrait le bal. Formé en 2019, le groupe s’impose doucement mais sûrement sur la scène emo/indie rock. À Paris, ils ont offert un set court mais ultra efficace, débutant sur “Where the Heart Is” dans une salle déjà bien remplie, avec un subtil mélange de douceur et d’énergie. Les applaudissements ne se sont pas fait attendre.

Dès le deuxième morceau, le ton est donné : la chanteuse Zayna Youssef tend le micro et le public hurle les paroles avec elle. Sur scène, les deux guitaristes échangent un baiser tendre, symbole d’une complicité sincère qui se ressent dans leur musique.

Charismatique, Zayna annonce : « We are Sweet Pill and we love you! » tandis que la guitariste envoie une performance vocale bluffante. Toute la salle se dandine au rythme de “Glow”, avant que le groupe ne remercie chaleureusement Paris : « What’s up Paris, thank you for being here, we are very excited so let’s have fun! »

Sur “Chewed Up”, les voix masculines du groupe viennent dynamiser le morceau, avec une énergie débordante. Ils s’essaient même au français avec un accent adorable, ce qui amuse beaucoup le public qui applaudit en rythme, spontanément.

Après quelques morceaux, Zayna lance :

« Vous êtes chaud pour Movements ??? Yessss ! »

Avant de partager combien le groupe est honoré d’ouvrir pour eux : « On était vraiment super heureux et choqués quand on nous a annoncé cette première partie. On est vraiment reconnaissant ! »

Photo souvenir avec le public « Vous êtes beaux, je vais la montrer à ma mère ! », aboiements collectifs pour “Dog Song” (?? pourquoi pas !), et enfin “Cut” qui déclenche le tout premier crowdsurf de la soirée.

Le public acclame Sweet Pill comme il se doit à la fin. Une superbe entrée en matière, pleine de fraîcheur, de fun, et de sincérité.

Movements: The Post-Hardcore Punch We Were Waiting For

Next up were Movements, the California-based band formed in 2015, and it had been six years since they last set foot in Paris. To say the anticipation was high would be an understatement. And the moment “Afraid To Die” kicked in (a favorite of our photographer Alexis, by the way), the room exploded: screaming fans, clapping hands, and a pit going wild right from the start.

Frontman Pat Miranda was chatty and full of gratitude:

“Paris, thank you so fucking much!” “Paris, what the fuck is up!!!”

He admitted it’d been a long time, and promised a longer set to celebrate the end of their tour… Okay, it was the same setlist as in Germany, but he was teasing, and honestly, no one cared.

“Full Circle” brought the energy up even more, with wave after wave of crowdsurfers. The crowd was electric. Pat thanked everyone again, touching on their journey since 2020, recording, touring…

Then came “Third Degree”, “Kept”, “Colorblind”… one classic after another. Paris clapped along all the way to the back of the venue. Pat pushed them further:

“Germany had the best crowd this year… Paris, can you beat that?”

Spoiler alert: they did. A circle pit broke out instantly during a song dedicated to Sweet Pill (“Make some noise for Sweet Pill!!!”), and the venue turned into a whirlwind.

“Where I Lay” and “I Hope You Choke!” sealed the deal, the bond between the band and the audience was electric. With “A.M.P.,” Pat challenged Paris again: “Are you ready to do better than the Germans??” → mission accomplished. The crowd sang, jumped, screamedk, and truly lived the moment.

As the set neared its end, the band delivered a hauntingly emotional “Deep Red”, before firing the room back up for the final stretch:

“Two more songs for you, I need more energy!!! Jump jump jump!”

Then came the final rallying cry:
“We’ve got one more song, and when I say one, I mean the last one, no encore! Paris, give it everything you’ve got! Tear it the fuck up!!!”

The finale on “Daylily”, the band’s iconic anthem, was a surge of emotion. We got our pink cloud summer moment, and for that, thank you!!!

The crowd screamed the chorus in Pat’s place. His last words: “Au revoir, merci!” — in perfect French.

Movements : la claque post-hardcore attendue

Place ensuite à Movements, groupe californien fondé en 2015, qui n’avait pas mis les pieds à Paris depuis six ans. Autant dire que l’attente était immense. Et dès les premières secondes de “Afraid To Die” (le morceau préféré de notre photographe Alexis, pour l’anecdote), l’explosion est immédiate : hurlements du public, mains qui claquent, et fosse qui saute de bon cœur.

Le chanteur Pat Miranda se montre très bavard et reconnaissant :

« Paris, thank you so fucking much! » « Paris, what’s the fuck is up !!! »

Il avoue que ça faisait longtemps, et promet un set plus long pour fêter la fin de leur tournée… bon, même setlist qu’en Allemagne, mais il est taquin, et on lui pardonne !

Sur “Full Circle”, la tension monte d’un cran avec des crowdsurfs en pagaille. Le public est bouillant, Patrick remercie à nouveau les fans d’être venus, évoquant leur parcours depuis 2020, les enregistrements, les tournées…

“Third Degree”, “Kept”, “Colorblind”… Les classiques s’enchaînent. Paris tape des mains en rythme jusqu’au fond de la salle. Patrick relance :

« German had the best crowd this year… Paris tu peux faire mieux ? »

Spoiler : oui. Circle pit immédiat sur la chanson dédiée à Sweet Pill « Make some noise for Sweet Pill !!! » , la salle est en fusion.

“Where I Lay” et “I Hope You Choke!” confirment l’incroyable osmose entre le groupe et son public. Sur “A.M.P.”, Paris répond présent : « Vous êtes prêts à faire mieux que les Allemands ??? » → mission accomplie. On chante, on saute, on crie, on vit.

Le set touche à sa fin. Le groupe offre un moment suspendu avec “Deep Red” tout en émotion, avant de remobiliser les énergies pour les deux dernières chansons :

« Two more songs for you, I need more energy !!! Jump jump jump ! »

« Il nous reste une chanson, et quand je dis une chanson, je veux dire la dernière, y’aura pas de rappel ! Paris, donne tout ! Paris, fous le bordel !!! »

Le final sur “Daylily”, LE morceau culte du groupe, est d’une puissance émotionnelle incroyable. Nous avons eu notre pink cloud summer et pour ça merci!!! 

Et le public hurle le refrain à la place de Pat. Dernier mot : « Au revoir, merci ! », en français.

Huge Thanks and an Unforgettable Night

Songs from every album, a mix of old hits and new favorites, a crowd that stayed fired up from start to finish, and explosive energy throughout, this second night of the European tour (with seven more to go, not counting Slam Dunk) was nothing short of a triumph.

Huge thanks to both bands for their generosity. Big love to the Paris crowd for bringing the heat.

Un grand merci et une soirée inoubliable

Des chansons de tous les albums, des tubes anciens comme récents, un public au taquet du début à la fin, une énergie explosive : cette deuxième date de tournée européenne (sur 7 restantes, sans compter le Slam Dunk) était une vraie réussite.

Merci aux groupes pour leur générosité. Merci au public parisien pour sa ferveur.

Et surtout, un immense merci à Veryshow pour les accréditations qui ont permis de vivre cette soirée incroyable. On en veut encore !
