On June 19, 2025, La Boule Noire got absolutely torn apart by the Brits from Static Dress, with the French band Sweet Needles kicking things off. It was a night drenched in post-hardcore and metalcore, with a touch of emo on top. So get ready to throw down, ’cause the moshpits were wild.

Le 19 juin 2025, la Boule Noire a été retournée par les anglais de Static Dress avec en ouverture, les français Sweet Needles. Un concert sous le signe du post hardcore, metalcore avec une pointe d’emo. Faites donc place aux pogos et surtout : aux moshpits.

The night kicked off with Sweet Needles taking the stage. Drinks in hand (yep, beer included, though, hey, drink responsibly), the four-piece hit the spotlight. The band features Oscar Bonnot on vocals, his brother Arthur switching between guitar and bass, Simon Dillinger on guitar, and Hippolyte Bordes behind the drums. Long hair, heavy riffs with a dash of Korn vibes, and a good dose of humor, that’s the Sweet Needles signature.

Why bother asking the crowd to scream or clap when you can just duct-tape “SCREAM” onto a mic stand and flash it at the audience? Genius. Even though the venue wasn’t packed early on, the band came out swinging, loud, wild, and full of raw energy that hit you right in the pit. Crushing bass, growls, clean vocals, blazing solos, and pounding drums, Sweet Needles set the tone for the chaos to come.

They played tracks like “Fail,” “Better Late Than Never,” and “Not Quiet.” The crowd was a little shy at first, but still curious, and supportive. Headbanging slowly took over, and the floor started to move. Songs like Tourne en rond opened with synth lines that felt straight out of a John Carpenter movie. Others gave off slight AqME vibes. “Party Police” brought flashes of Electric Callboy (the latest project from ex-Sum 41 drummer Frank Zummo), and certain moments even gave off a taste of Die Antwoord’s twisted energy.

La soirée débute avec l’arrivée sur scène des Sweet Needles. N’oubliez pas vos boissons (bières -même si l’abus d’alcool est dangereux pour votre santé-), le quatuor arrive sur scène. Le groupe est composé de Oscar Bonnot au chant, son frère Arthur à la guitare ou à la basse, Simon Dillinger à la guitare et enfin Hippolyte Bordes à la batterie. Des cheveux longs, une vibe musicale à la Korn par moments et toujours une pointe d’humour font le charme de Sweet Needles. Effectivement, pourquoi s’embêter à demander aux gens de crier ou d’applaudir quand il suffit juste de prendre un pied de micro et décrire au gaffeur “CRI” sous le pied afin de le montrer au public. Même si peu de monde était présent dans la salle pour l’ouverture du concert, le groupe est électrique sur scène, mouvementé avec une bonne énergie que l’on peut ressentir depuis la fosse. De la basse bien lourde, du scream, du chant, des solos de guitare et de la batterie fracassante sont les maîtres mots pour Sweet Needles qui vont poser l’ambiance pour la suite du concert. Ils joueront des titres comme Fail, Better late than never, ou encore Not Quiet. Le public est un peu timide mais reste pour autant curieux et supportive. Les headbangs arrivent, le public s’agite de plus en plus. Certaines chansons comme Tourne en rond ont un début au synthé qui rappellera les musiques du grand John Carpenter. Certaines autres feront un léger écho aux français de Aqme. Party Police nous rappellera Electric Callboy (nouveau groupe de l’ancien batteur de Sum 41 Frank Zummo). Certaines sonorités du morceau nous feront également penser à Die Antwoord.

Finally, it was time for the Brits of Static Dress to hit the stage. The crowd had grown, still not a full house, but the energy in the room was undeniable. It was their first-ever headlining show in France, and you could tell the band was stoked. And so were we. Let’s not forget: back in 2023, they were opening for none other than Bring Me the Horizon. As soon as they kicked off with “face.”, the place erupted. The five member, Olli Appleyard (vocals), Vincent Weight (guitar), Contrast (guitar), George Holding (bass), and Sam Ogden (drums), were clearly psyched to be there, and it showed. Olli even handed over the mic to the crowd at one point, letting a fan pour their soul into the lyrics like it was their own show. Behind them, old-school VHS-style visuals played on screen, straight out of a dusty ‘90s tape, echoing the static-filled TV next to their merch booth. The second Courtney, Just Relax dropped, the pit blew wide open. From there, it was pure intensity: bursts of adrenaline, crowd surges, fists flying, and raw connection. During crying, the emotion peaked. Olli pushed the crowd to move closer, to be present, to scream every lyric with their whole chest. He wanted bodies moving and voices shaking the ceiling. They rolled through disposable care, Unknown, sweet., and closed things out with clean., a quick but unforgettable set.

C’est enfin l’heure que les anglais de Static Dress arrivent sur scène. La salle c’est un peu plus remplie même si elle reste à moitié pleine cependant l’ambiance est présente directement dans la salle. C’est leur première date française en tant que tête d’affiche. Le groupe est ravi et nous aussi. Surtout qu’il est également important de rappeler qu’en 2023 ils ont été en première partie des grands Bring Me the Horizon. Dès leur arrivée sur leur titre face. les cinq membres de Static Dress sont acclamés. Olli Appleyard (chanteur), Vincent Weight (guitare), Contrast (guitare), George Holding (basse), Sam Ogden (batterie) sont ravis d’être là et ça se ressent ! Olli va laisser chanter le public à sa place, jusqu’à ce qu’une des personnes dans le public finisse par attraper son micro pour chanter avec son âme. Les écrans derrière la scène diffusent des images vintages, rappelant les images VHS de notre enfance mais également la télévision posée à côté de leur stand de merchandising. Dès que Courtney, Just Relax va retentir, les premiers moshpit vont éclater dans la fosse. L’ambiance va osciller entre moments d’excitation, moshpit avec des moments forts, d’une intensité rare. Ce fut le cas durant crying, Olli a également insisté pour que le public se rapproche, partage l’instant avec eux et chantent de tout leur être. Olli voulait entendre nos voix s’élever et de bouger nos corps. Les titres vont s’enchaîner rapidement, disposable care, Unknown, sweet. pour finir sur clean.

Still, this first headlining show in Paris from the Static Dress crew left us wanting a little more, the set felt a bit short, and the energy didn’t quite hit its full potential. Maybe it was the half-empty room… or maybe just an off night. Let’s give the band the benefit of the doubt, next time will no doubt hit harder.

Ce premier concert en tête d’affiche à Paris des coreux de Static Dress nous aura tout de même laisser sur notre faim de par sa durée mais aussi par l’ambiance qui n’était pas à son maximum. Peut être cela était dû à la salle à moitié pleine… laissons le bénéfice du doute au groupe, la prochaine fois sera sûrement meilleure…!
