On Wednesday, October 23rd, Starset landed in Paris for a complete immersion at Le Bataclan. If you don’t know who Starset is, they are an electronic rock band from Columbus, Ohio. They blend music and storytelling, focusing on futuristic, space-themed concepts. Their live shows aren’t just concerts, they are “demonstrations”, and this one proved why.

With no openers, Starset had the public all to themselves for a two-hour long performance. When the curtains are pulled back to finally reveal the stage, we are diving into the story right away. We were immediately immersed in the narrative, with a massive screen at the back of the stage projecting cinematic sequences, while holographic fans at the front added another layer to the visuals. The band stood between these elements, ready to start the first song after the intro video.

As Unbecoming kicks off, it became clear that this was more than just a performance. The visuals on the screen sync with the holographic fans, which truly creates a fully immersive experience. Each song was part of a larger story, with interludes between them. The stage design was high-budget for a good reason.

Mercredi 23 octobre, Starset a atterri à Paris pour une immersion complète au Bataclan. Si vous ne connaissez pas Starset, c’est un groupe de rock électronique originaire de Columbus, dans l’Ohio. Ils mêlent musique et narration, avec un univers futuriste et des concepts inspirés par l’espace. Leurs spectacles ne sont pas seulement des concerts : ce sont des « démonstrations », et celle-ci en a été une preuve.

Sans première partie, Starset avait le public pour eux seuls pour deux heures de performance. Quand les rideaux se sont levés pour révéler la scène, nous sommes immédiatement plongés dans l’histoire. Dès le début, nous étions totalement immergés dans le récit, avec un écran géant en fond de scène projetant des séquences cinématographiques, tandis que des ventilateurs holographiques à l’avant ajoutaient une couche supplémentaire aux visuels. Le groupe se tenait entre ces éléments, prêt à lancer le premier morceau après la vidéo d’introduction.

Dès les premières notes d’Unbecoming, il est devenu évident que cela allait au-delà d’une simple performance. Les visuels à l’écran se synchronisaient avec les ventilateurs holographiques, créant une immersion totale. Chaque chanson faisait partie d’une histoire plus large, entrecoupée de courtes scènes cinématiques. La scénographie, d’un budget visiblement élevé, apportait une réelle valeur ajoutée au spectacle.

The seven band members, all in futuristic soldier outfits, played their roles well. Props like flags, confetti, lasers, and smoke cannons only added to the spectacle. The crowd is mostly calm and observant, but they actively join in singing along.

For the first part of the show, the band performed behind the holographic fans. We’re watching them through this filter which puts distance between the band and its audience. And it fits perfectly with the story they were telling. However, this part lasted for about three quarters of the set which is a long time with this detachment from the crowd. Towards the end, it was getting repetitive and I couldn’t wait for these fans to be gone.

Finally the rebellion takes over. The holographic fans are removed, allowing us to finally see the band more clearly. The shift is dramatic and clearly indicates that a new chapter had begun. The band’s outfits changed as well to match the story going to the rebellion side.

Some horizontal lights across the stage replace the fans. It represents the breakdown of control, and now the lead singer, Dustin, can freely move across the stage and can engage with the crowd more directly.

Les sept membres du groupe, tous en costumes futuristes de soldats, incarnaient leurs rôles à la perfection. Les accessoires comme les drapeaux, confettis, lasers et canons à fumée renforçaient l’ampleur du spectacle. Le public restait relativement calme et observateur, mais participait activement en chantant.

Pendant la première partie du spectacle, le groupe se produisait derrière les ventilateurs holographiques. Nous les observions à travers ce filtre qui instaurait une certaine distance entre le groupe et le public, parfaitement en phase avec le récit qu’ils nous racontaient. Toutefois, cette première partie a duré les trois quarts du set, et après un certain temps, cette séparation est devenue répétitive. À la fin, on attendait avec impatience que ces ventilateurs disparaissent.

Enfin, la rébellion prend le dessus. Les ventilateurs holographiques sont retirés, nous permettant de voir le groupe plus clairement. Ce changement marque un tournant dramatique et indique qu’un nouveau chapitre a commencé. Les tenues du groupe ont également changé pour s’aligner avec l’histoire, se tournant du côté des rebelles.

Des lumières horizontales traversant la scène remplacent les ventilateurs. Elles représentent la rupture du contrôle, et désormais, le chanteur Dustin peut se déplacer librement sur scène et interagir plus directement avec le public.

Before launching into Echo, Dustin, gives his first speech of the night, thanking the crew since there were no openers. The,, the crowd finally gets the moment they have been waiting for with My Demons, which witnessed the most activity in the pit. This song was the peak of energy for the night.

The final part of the show marks the end of the narrative, with one last outfit change for the encore with TokSik. Even though the band faked a “last encore” with a joke about how they “don’t usually do this” it was clear they had planned for one more big finish.

Starset’s demonstration in Paris wasn’t just a concert. It was an immersive experience where every element, music, visuals, props, were part of a bigger story. Despite some parts dragging on, particularly with the holographic fans dominating much of the first half, the overall experience was captivating. The detailed narrative, combined with a impressive production, made this show a unique journey through a dystopian world. We have to salute Starset’s ability to push the boundaries of their live performance.

Avant d’entamer Echo, Dustin donne son premier discours de la soirée, remerciant l’équipe puisqu’il n’y avait pas de première partie. Finalement, le public obtient le moment tant attendu avec My Demons, qui a vu l’activité la plus intense dans la fosse. Ce morceau a été le sommet de l’énergie de la soirée.

La dernière partie du concert marque la fin du récit, avec un dernier changement de tenue pour le rappel avec TokSik. Bien que le groupe ait simulé un « faux rappel » en plaisantant sur le fait qu’ils « ne le faisaient pas d’habitude », il était clair qu’ils avaient prévu une grande fin.

La démonstration de Starset à Paris n’était pas juste un concert. C’était une expérience immersive où chaque élément—musique, visuels, accessoires—faisait partie d’une histoire plus vaste. Malgré quelques longueurs, surtout avec les ventilateurs holographiques dans la première moitié, l’expérience globale était captivante. Le récit détaillé, combiné à une production impressionnante, a fait de ce spectacle un voyage unique dans un monde dystopique. On ne peut que saluer la capacité de Starset à repousser les limites de la performance live.
