The electric guitars, showcasing incredible technique, set a tone both ethereal and deeply emotional, while the bassist, despite his understated appearance behind glasses, impressed with his energy and precision. Drawing from their 2023 album, the band delivered compelling performances of tracks like All Night, with its intriguing tempo, and Never Coming Back, where the drummer’s refined playing took center stage. Their latest single, Drown, struck a chord with the audience from its very first notes, immersing the room in an introspective, dreamlike atmosphere. Songs like Lighthouse and Old Ways further highlighted the group’s exceptional musical cohesion, each member seamlessly contributing to their unique sound. This Canadian shoegaze duo, led by twin sisters Mercedes and Phoenix Arn Horn, immediately captivated the audience with Haunt You Still. Backed by Brent McSwiggan and Phil Hirst, the twins carried the set to new heights, following up with fan favorites Gloomy Girl and Take It Off, with the crowd passionately shouting back every lyric. The twins’ connection on stage was magnetic: Phoenix, blending into the darkness yet commanding attention with their sharp, flawless drum work, while Mercedes lit up the room with her charisma and fiery stage presence. Tracks from their latest EP, Heaven, like Spit It Out, Gaslight, and Young Forever, kept the energy soaring. One of the standout moments came when Mercedes paused to address the audience, speaking about the murder of a young woman in the UK by a police officer, before launching into BWBB, a song brimming with fury and defiance. Tackling heavy themes like misogyny and societal injustice, Softcult’s shows are not just musical performances but also political statements, igniting a fire in the crowd. The 14-song setlist also featured standout tracks like Someone2Me, Drain, and One Of The Pack, fully embodying the band’s emotional and sonic depth.
