Shadow of Intent, Aborted & Disembodied Tyrant: Paris Gets Absolutely Wrecked at La Machine du Moulin Rouge EN/FR

EN
There are nights when you have a pretty good idea of what you’re getting yourself into. And then there are nights when you take one look at the lineup and realize you’re probably gonna walk out with a few fewer functioning neck vertebrae. September 28 at La Machine du Moulin Rouge was definitely one of those nights.

With Disembodied Tyrant, Aborted, and Shadow of Intent on the bill, a chill night was never in the cards. And judging by the absolute chaos unfolding in the pit as each band took the stage, nobody showed up expecting one.

Soreption kicks off the night. Unfortunately, by the time our photographer made it into the venue, their set was already pretty much over, so no photos this time around. La Machine was still far from packed when they hit the stage, but that didn’t stop them from winning over the crowd. One hell of an opener before all hell broke loose.

DISEMBODIED TYRANT

I’ll say it right off the bat: this was the band I was most excited to see live. Needless to say, my expectations were pretty damn high. And as soon as “Icarian” kicks in, La Machine is now absolutely packed, and it takes literally seconds for the crowd to lose its collective mind. The first circle pit breaks out, bodies are flying everywhere, and the crowd is instantly hooked. We’re all sold.

And right in the middle of all that chaos, a completely unexpected moment for me: Dominic Petrocelli points straight at me from the stage to tell me he loves my hair, neon green, so not exactly hard to miss. Consider me flattered.

During “Malphasian,” Blake Mullens puts down his guitar. Hands up, then a wall of death: everyone follows suit, and the breakdown that comes next is absolutely filthy. The kind of moment that has you pulling out your best stank face without even realizing it.
“The Poetic Edda” confirms what we’ve already figured out by this point: the crowd is completely won over. The entire venue is going nuts, and nobody seems remotely interested in slowing down. Blake picks up his guitar again for “Omenkiller,” which comes out swinging right from the start. Crushingly heavy instrumentals, screams straight out of the gate: no unnecessary buildup, just an immediate punch to the face.
Then comes “8.6 Black-Out.” Dominic takes a moment to say what a fucking awesome tour this has been, while Blake once again puts down his guitar. And can we take a second to appreciate that absolutely glorious pig squeal? But what really stands out live is just how insanely well their two voices work together. And that’s without even getting into their instrumental skills, especially Dominic, who not only absolutely shreds on his instrument but also delivers some seriously killer vocals.
And just like that, it’s already time for “Winter.” Dominic reminds everyone that this is their first time in Europe and that they’re absolutely loving the experience. Blake then announces that this will be their last song, and it’s safe to say nobody wants this set to end just yet. The pit, however, decides to make every last second count, keeping the chaos going right until the very end.
As for the band I was looking forward to the most tonight? Let’s just say they did not fucking disappoint.

DISEMBODIED TYRANT

Me voilà flattée.

Arrive « 8.6 Black-Out ».

ABORTED

A change of pace, but definitely not a drop in brutality.
Aborted hits the stage with “Dreadbringer,” and Sven de Caluwé wastes no time reconnecting with Paris: “Good evening, Paris! It feels good to be back!” At his request, the crowd starts clapping along, and just like that, the madness begins.
During “Retrogore,” Sven checks in with the crowd: “How are we doing, Paris?” Naturally, a massive “YEEEEES!” comes roaring back. He says how stoked he is to be here with such an insane lineup before calling for a circle pit. No need to ask twice.
Then comes “Brotherhood of Sleep,” along with a little announcement: this is their first show in France with their new drummer. So, naturally: “MAKE SOME NOISE!!!”
But what Sven really wants to see is “a real tsunami of crowdsurfers,” Brotherhood-style. And Paris clearly takes that challenge very seriously. Crowdsurfers start pouring in at an absolutely ridiculous rate. At one point, I’m pretty sure the stage is about to hit maximum capacity with the sheer number of people making their way up there.

During “The Origin of Disease,” Sven asks how many people in the room have never seen Aborted before. “Sorry for you!”
Then comes the most ridiculous story of the night: apparently, his mom keeps telling him he’s fat, so he suggests we all get some exercise together. The rules are simple: whenever he says a particular phrase, everyone has to do squats. And, of course, the entire pit plays along.
With “The Shape of Hate,” it’s time for another little detour: it’s a friend of the band’s birthday, and Sven asks everyone at La Machine to sing her a birthday song. The entire venue happily obliges, only for him to announce once the song is over: “YEAH!!! IT WAS LAST WEEK!” Well, there you have it.
And since we apparently weren’t exhausted enough already, he immediately calls for a wall of death. “Death Cult” is introduced as a track from their latest album, before “Insect Politics” also serves as a warm-up for what’s coming next: “ARE YOU READY FOR SHADOW OF INTENT? MAKE SOME FUCKING NOISE!”

The set finally comes to a close with “Threading on Vermillion Deception / The Saw and the Carnage Done.” “This is our last one tonight! THANK YOU, PARIS!!!” Aborted leaves behind a pit that’s already been absolutely battered.

ABORTED

La fin du set arrive avec « Threading on Vermillion Deception / The Saw and the Carnage Done ».
Aborted quitte une fosse déjà bien amochée.

SHADOW OF INTENT

The second Shadow of Intent steps onstage, the crowd absolutely loses its mind. “Infinity of Horrors” kicks in, and, of course, a circle pit breaks out immediately. Apparently, we’re skipping the warm-up entirely. The opening notes of “Flying the Black Flag” are enough to send another wave of screams through the venue, somehow kicking the intensity up yet another notch. Then comes “The Migrant,” and all you have to do is look around: mosh pits everywhere, cups flying through the air, crowdsurfers… You name it, it’s happening. Ben Duerr also takes a moment to thank the crowd between waves of absolute chaos.

During “Feeding the Meatgrinder,” my stank face hasn’t budged.
Yep. I think that pretty much sums up the entire song.
“The Heretic Prevails” gets the whole venue jumping, and that breakdown hits ridiculously hard. The kind of moment where everyone knows exactly what’s coming, but it still gets you every single time.
With “Barren and Breathless Macrocosm,” hands shoot up once again. As the breakdown hits, a thick cloud of smoke engulfs the stage, perfectly matching the crushing heaviness of the track.

Then Ben Duerr finally drops the two words nobody wants to hear:
“Last song.” And that last song is “Imperium Delirium.”
And holy shit, what a way to close out a set. The crowd throws every last ounce of energy into it, as if we haven’t already spent several hours getting absolutely wrecked.
Except… it’s not actually over.
Shadow of Intent returns for an encore with “Malediction,” and now it’s time to dig deep and find whatever energy we have left. The pit erupts into one final round of absolute mayhem, making sure the night ends exactly the way it started: in complete and utter chaos.

SHADOW OF INTENT

Four bands, four absolutely insane crowd reactions, and a pit that barely stopped moving all night. On September 28, La Machine du Moulin Rouge was packed to the rafters with people who clearly had zero intention of saving their energy.

Disembodied Tyrant was the band I’d been looking forward to the most, and their performance more than lived up to the hype. Between their incredible musicianship, insanely powerful vocal duo, and a crowd that was hooked from the very first seconds, they absolutely delivered. Aborted then turned their set into one massive playground of circle pits, walls of death, crowdsurfers, squats, and Sven de Caluwé’s hilarious banter, before Shadow of Intent came in to finish off whatever was left of the pit.

By the time “Malediction” came to an end, there was pretty much nothing left in the tank.

And after a night like that, that’s exactly how it should be. Thanks Garmonbozia

Merci Garmonbozia
