On the day after the Fête de la Musique, Petit Bain once again offered a well-curated lineup, focused on hardcore and metalcore. This evening, organized by Veryshow, had the honor of hosting the Japanese band Crystal Lake, accompanied by two high-quality French bands: Ashen and FreeHowling.

Metalcore orgy: Crystal Lake, Ashen and FreeHowling electrify Le Petit Bain.

Au lendemain de la Fête de la Musique, le Petit Bain a de nouveau proposé une affiche soignée, placée sous le signe du hardcore et du metalcore. Cette soirée, organisée par Veryshow, a eu l’honneur d’accueillir les Japonais de Crystal Lake, accompagnés par deux groupes français de grande qualité : Ashen et FreeHowling.

The hostilities begin with FreeHowling, a band that blends hardcore, industrial, and rap influences. The French band presents their latest EP, ‘Pure Negative Attitude‘, live, which was released last April.
From the first notes of ‘Far Beyond the Rain‘ the audience, who knew what to expect, instantly comes alive. The riffs are precise, and the scream of singer Guillaume Nicolas is incredibly effective. Those who wanted a live preview of the latest opus got their money’s worth, as the entire EP was played during the set.
A few minutes before the end of the performance, the current events in France are brought to everyone’s attention. The band takes the moment to call on the crowd to “raise their middle finger for this fucking RN.” The show ends beautifully with Oruna coming on stage for a live featuring on ‘The Bodies Fall Just Like the Leaves‘ thus concluding a great warm-up for the evening.

Les hostilités commencent avec FreeHowling, un groupe défendant un style teinté de hardcore, d’indus et de rap. Les Français présentent en live leur dernier EP, ‘Pure Negative Attitude‘ sorti en avril dernier.
Dès les premières notes de ‘Far Beyond the Rain‘ le public, qui savait à qui il avait affaire, s’anime instantanément. Les riffs sont précis et le scream du chanteur Guillaume Nicolas est terriblement efficace. Ceux qui souhaitaient un aperçu en live du dernier opus en ont eu pour leur argent, l’intégralité de celui-ci ayant été jouée pendant le set.
A quelques minutes de la fin de la performance, l’actualité française est rappelée à tous. Le groupe profite du moment pour appeler la fosse à mettre le “majeur en l’air pour ce putain de RN”. Le show se termine en beauté avec l’arrivée d’Oruna sur scène pour un featuring en live sur ‘The Bodies Fall Just Like the Leaves‘, clôturant ainsi une belle mise en bouche de la soirée.

The stage lights up with much more pop colors as the Parisians of Ashen take the stage, led by Clem Richard. The frontman, dressed entirely in white, immediately engages the audience from the first seconds of the track ‘Angel‘ released last year. What truly defines Ashen is the boundless energy of their singer, who can’t stand still and lives each song to the fullest.
“The last time we were here was with Novelist, and it was our best show. Tonight, I want you to go even crazier!” he shouts within the first few minutes, determined to push the crowd to their limits. “Open up this pit, show us what a real wall of death in Paris looks like!”
The metalcore band then launches into a set of about ten songs in this electrified atmosphere, including their latest track ‘Sacrifice‘ featuring Aaron Matts of ten56. In a surprise move, Matts takes the stage to perform the single, causing genuine hysteria among the crowd.
The set ends on a softer note with a cover of Nirvana’s ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit ‘ sung in unison by everyone on the barge, before closing the show with ‘Outlier‘ a hit from their first EP. Ashen‘s performance leaves the audience wanting more, now fully energized for the arrival of the Japanese band Crystal Lake.

La scène se pare de lumières aux couleurs beaucoup plus pop tandis que les Parisiens d’Ashen arrivent sur scène, menés par Clem Richard. Le frontman, tout vêtu de blanc, réussit d’emblée à amener le public avec lui dès les premières secondes du titre ‘Angel‘ sorti l’année dernière. Car s’il y a bien quelque chose qui caractérise Ashen, c’est l’énergie débordante de son chanteur, qui ne tient pas en place et qui vit les morceaux au plus profond de lui.
“La dernière fois qu’on est venu ici, c’était avec Novelist et c’était notre meilleure date. Ce soir, je veux que vous foutiez encore plus le bordel !” scande-t-il dès les premières minutes, comptant bien pousser le public dans ses retranchements. “Ouvrez-nous ce pit, montrez-nous ce qu’est un vrai wall of death à Paris !”
Le groupe de metalcore va ainsi enchaîner dans cette atmosphère survoltée une dizaine de morceaux, dont leur dernier né ‘Sacrifice‘, en featuring avec Aaron Matts de ten56. Petite surprise, ce dernier débarque sur scène pour venir poser sur le single, provoquant une véritable hystérie au sein de la fosse.
La fin du set se fait plus en douceur, avec une reprise de ‘Smells Like Teen Spirit ‘de Nirvana, reprise en chœur par la totalité de la péniche, avant de clôturer le show avec Outlier succès de leur premier EP.
La performance d’Ashen laisse un goût de reviens-y dans les oreilles du public, qui est désormais chauffé à bloc pour l’arrivée des Japonais de Crystal Lake.

At 9 PM, in front of a full barge, the lights go out to make way for the headliners of the evening. The drummer appears alone, surrounded by blue halos, with one arm raised. The atmosphere is already electric when the rest of the band arrives to start the first notes of ‘Prometheus‘.

Crystal Lake is known for their impressive stage performances, and tonight’s show only enhances their reputation. The musicians give it their all, and the two guitarists don’t hesitate to stage dive multiple times. 

John Robert Centorrino (ex-The Last Ten Seconds of Life), the new frontman who joined the band at the beginning of 2023, sets the tone and is already very comfortable in his role. When he asks the audience who has seen them live before, a good half of the room raises their hands. 

The twelve songs in the setlist offer the audience a perfect balance between what has made them successful since their beginnings (‘Open Water‘, ‘Six Feet Under‘, ‘Machina‘) and their new productions. The Japanese band even treats the audience to a live debut of their latest track, ‘Bludgod‘ during which they invite the crowd to chant the chorus together.

The temperature in the room rises minute by minute. The barge feels like it’s in the middle of a raging sea, swaying to the rhythm of the crowd’s jumps, the relentless circle pits, and the band’s devastating breakdowns. 

When the concert comes to an end, after an explosive encore, the euphoric audience chants Crystal Lake‘s name for several minutes. The musicians stay on stage for a while after the lights come back on, taking the time to interact with the fans. This Saturday night ends with one question on everyone’s lips: when will the next album with John at the helm be released?

C’est à 21h, devant une salle pleine à craquer, que les lumières s’éteignent pour laisser place aux boss de la soirée. Le batteur apparaît seul, entouré par des halos bleus, un bras levé. L’ambiance est déjà électrique lorsque le reste du groupe débarque pour entamer les premières notes de ‘Prometheus‘.

Crystal Lake est connu pour ses performances scéniques impressionnantes et le show de ce soir ne fera que renforcer leur réputation. Les musiciens se donnent à fond et les deux guitaristes n’hésitent pas à se lancer dans des stage dives à plusieurs reprises.

John Robert Centorrino (ex-The Last Ten Seconds of Life), le nouveau frontman qui a rejoint le groupe début 2023, pose les bases et se montre déjà tout à fait à l’aise dans son rôle. Lorsqu’il demande à l’assemblée qui était déjà venue les voir en live, une bonne moitié de la salle lève la main.

Les douze morceaux de la setlist offrent au public un bel équilibre entre ce qui a fait leur succès depuis leurs débuts (‘Open Water‘, ‘Six Feet Under‘, ‘Machina‘) et leurs nouvelles productions. Les Japonais offrent même au public la découverte en live de leur dernier né, ‘Bludgod‘, au cours duquel ils invitent la foule à scander le refrain en chœur.

La température de la salle grimpe minute après minute. La péniche est comme transportée au milieu d’une mer déchaînée, tanguant au rythme des jumps du public, des circle pits incessants et des breakdowns dévastateurs du groupe.

Lorsque le concert touche à sa fin, après un rappel explosif, le public euphorique scande encore le nom de Crystal Lake pendant de longues minutes. Les musiciens restent un bon moment sur scène après que les lumières soient rallumées, prenant le temps pour accorder à chacun un moment d’échange. Ce samedi soir se termine avec une question sur toutes les lèvres : à quand la sortie du prochain album avec John aux manettes ?
