For its 20th anniversary, the Main Square Festival, which took place from 4 to 7 July 2024 at the sublime citadel of Arras, hit back with a top-quality and eclectic line-up, spanning four days instead of three! We were lucky enough to cover Friday 5 July, and here’s our detailed report.

Pour ses 20 ans, le Main Square Festival, qui s’est déroulé du 4 au 7 juillet 2024 à la sublime citadelle d’Arras, a frappé fort avec un line-up de très grande qualité et éclectique, s’étalant sur quatre jours au lieu de trois ! Nous avons eu la chance de couvrir la journée du vendredi 5 juillet, et voici notre compte rendu détaillé.

Exemplary organisation despite constraints
This year, because of the Olympic Games and the Euro football tournament, the Mainsquare festival decided not to offer camping facilities. The lack of security staff led the organisers to prioritise the quality of the reception rather than risk a bad experience for festival-goers. It was a wise decision which, although it contributed to the festival not selling out, in no way detracted from its success. The queues at the entrances bear witness to this: the site was very full, but more breathable, facilitating traffic flow while keeping the crowds compact in front of the stages.

Une Organisation Exemplaire malgré les Contraintes
Cette année, en raison des Jeux Olympiques et de l’Euro de football, le Mainquare festival a pris la décision de ne pas proposer de camping. Le manque de personnel de sécurité a poussé les organisateurs à privilégier la qualité de l’accueil plutôt que de risquer une mauvaise expérience pour les festivaliers. Un choix judicieux qui, bien que contribuant à ce que le festival ne soit pas complet, n’a en rien entaché son succès. Les files d’attente à l’entrée en témoignent : le site était très rempli, mais plus respirable, facilitant la circulation tout en conservant une foule compacte devant les scènes.

The welcome extended to VIPs and the press was simply outstanding. Personally, I felt extremely valued in my work thanks to a professional and attentive hospitality and communication team. There’s no doubt that the artists received top-notch treatment, just like the festival-goers.

L’accueil réservé aux VIP et à la presse était tout simplement royal. Personnellement, je me suis senti extrêmement valorisé dans mon travail grâce à une équipe d’accueil et de communication à l’écoute et très professionnelle. Il ne fait aucun doute que les artistes ont également bénéficié du meilleur accueil, tout comme les festivaliers.

A Well-Designed and Friendly Venue
The site featured numerous stands and bars, offering a wide range of menus to festival-goers. The variety of options ensured everyone found something to eat and drink, contributing to a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.

Un Site Bien Aménagé et Convivial
Sur le site, de nombreux stands et bars étaient à disposition, offrant un large choix de menus aux festivaliers. La diversité des options a permis à chacun de trouver de quoi se restaurer et se désaltérer, contribuant à une ambiance conviviale et détendue.
Un Line-Up Éclectique et de Grande Qualité
Le vendredi, nous avons été témoins de performances exceptionnelles. Voici un aperçu des groupes qui ont marqué cette journée:

Landmvrks set the stage on fire right from their arrival, with the crowd cheering and a blue butterfly appearing on the screen followed by a huge red “V.” They opened with “Creature,” prompting many crowd surfers, including a standout “Where’s Waldo” costume. During their second song, “Death,” a wall of death initiated by the same spectator amplified the crowd’s energy. Lead singer Flo engaged with the audience, instructing them to scream “death” after he said “everyday I feel like.” The crowd followed along, and the word appeared prominently on the screen behind the band.
Flo encouraged the crowd to stage dive, assuring those who had never tried that they would experience it that day. The third song, “Say No Word,” saw an enthusiastic audience with a circle pit forming mid-song.
During “Visage,” an impressive circle pit formed, but a power cut in the middle of the song halted the action. “Where’s Waldo” kept the audience entertained by getting them to clap in rhythm, followed by supportive chants for the band, who sat on stage making heart shapes with their hands towards the crowd.

Landmvrks a enflammé la scène dès leur arrivée, sous les acclamations du public, avec une musique d’introduction accompagnée d’un papillon bleu sur l’écran, suivi d’un énorme V rouge. Le groupe a ouvert avec “Creature“, déclenchant l’apparition de nombreux crowsurfers, dont un spectateur déguisé en “Où est Charlie” qui s’est particulièrement fait remarquer. Lors du deuxième titre, “Death“, un wall of death initié par ce même spectateur a intensifié l’énergie du public. Le chanteur Flo a interagi avec la foule en disant : « Quand je dis ‘everyday I feel like’, vous criez ‘death’ ! ». Le public a joué le jeu, et le mot s’affichait en grand sur l’écran derrière le groupe.
Flo a ensuite invité les spectateurs à slammer, assurant ceux qui n’avaient jamais essayé qu’ils vivraient leur première expérience ce jour-là. Le troisième titre, “Say No Word“, a vu le public toujours aussi enthousiaste, avec un circle pit au milieu de la chanson.
Pendant “Visage“, un circle pit impressionnant s’est formé, mais une coupure d’électricité en plein milieu du morceau a suspendu l’action. “Où est Charlie” a occupé le public en les faisant taper des mains en rythme, suivi de chants de soutien pour le groupe, qui, assis sur scène, adressaient des cœurs avec les mains au public.

After a few minutes, the band resumed with “Tired of it all,” despite minor technical issues throughout the set. The song “Fantasy” followed, with Flo encouraging the audience to sing along, continuing even after the song ended. Flo then launched into “Scars” with a collective jump, followed by an acoustic performance of “Suffocate” before being joined by the band for a grand finale.
The band also played tracks like “Hollow,” “Rainfall,” and “Lost in a Wave,” with Flo asking to see everyone moving. Security was present to control stage dives, but it didn’t stop the crowd from actively participating. The set ended with “Self Made“, with Flo asking the audience to sing as loudly as possible for the final chorus.

Après quelques minutes, le groupe a repris avec “Tired of it all“, malgré de petits problèmes techniques tout au long du set. La chanson “Fantasy” a suivi, avec Flo incitant le public à chanter, et la foule a continué même après la fin du morceau. Flo a ensuite lancé “Scars” avec un jump général, puis a interprété “Suffocate” en acoustique avant d’être rejoint par le groupe pour une fin en apothéose.
Le groupe a également joué des titres comme “Hollow“, “Rainfall“, et “Lost in a Wave“, avec Flo demandant à voir tout le monde en mouvement. La sécurité était présente pour casser les slams, ce qui n’a pas empêché la foule de participer activement. Le set s’est terminé sur “Self Made“, avec Flo demandant au public de chanter le plus fort possible pour le dernier refrain.

The British alternative rock band Nothing But Thieves delivered an eclectic setlist, mixing old hits with new songs. The crowd was large and enthusiastic, especially moved by the song “Impossible.” Connor Mason interacted with the audience before starting “Ce n’est rien,” expressing their love for French fans. Their cover of “Where is My Mind” electrified the crowd, and the set concluded with “Overcome.

Le groupe britannique de rock alternatif Nothing But Thieves a offert une setlist éclectique, mélangeant anciens succès et nouvelles chansons. La foule était nombreuse et enthousiaste, particulièrement émue par le titre “Impossible“. Connor Mason a interagi avec le public avant de démarrer “Ce n’est rien“, exprimant leur amour pour les fans français. Leur cover de “Where is My Mind” a déchaîné la foule, et le set s’est conclu sur “Overcome“.

The Mexican sister trio, The Warning, captivated the audience from the first notes. Dany greeted the crowd in French, introducing her band with infectious charisma and energy. They immediately engaged the crowd with “Six Feet Deep.” Pau, on drums, impressed with her vocal performances thanks to her headset microphone, while Ale on bass delivered a clear and punchy line. The precision of Dany‘s guitar solos was particularly appreciated.
“Six Feet Deep“: The crowd clapped in rhythm under Dany’s direction, who expressed her joy of being present with an enthusiastic “So happy to be here.”

Le trio de sœurs mexicaines, The Warning, a captivé le public dès les premières notes. Dany a salué le public en français, présentant son groupe avec un charisme et une énergie communicative. Elles ont immédiatement engagé la foule avec le titre “Six Feet Deep“. Pau, à la batterie, a impressionné par ses performances vocales grâce à son micro de visage, tandis qu’Ale à la basse a assuré une ligne claire et percutante. La justesse des solos de guitare de Dany a été particulièrement appréciée.
“Six Feet Deep” : Le public tape dans les mains en rythme sous la direction de Dany, qui exprime sa joie d’être présente en lançant un enthousiaste “So happy to be here”.

“Z“: Started softly but quickly evolved into powerful rock, inciting the crowd to move. Dany‘s solos made the crowd sway.
“Qué Más Quieres“: Dany explained that the band had just released a new album, with this Spanish song captivating the crowd who admired the performances displayed on the side screens.
“Dull Knives“: Dany energized the crowd with her guitar, inciting them to scream and creating dynamic interaction.
“Money“: The sisters’ energy and facial expressions were adorable and engaging, demonstrating their happiness to be on stage. The crowd responded enthusiastically to their “Merci beaucoup.”
“S!ck“: They started strong with this song, Dany shouting “Make some noise for my lil sister on bass, for my middle sister on drums!”
“Discipline“: Pau impressed with her singing, giving the audience chills and maintaining this emotion throughout the song. The rhythmic applause was intense.
“Hell You Call a Dream“: The emotion overwhelmed the audience, an unexpectedly powerful moment that resulted in a standing ovation.
“Narcisista“: Dany engaged the crowd, asking them to sing with her. Her powerful and emotional voice was acclaimed by the audience.
“Evolve“: Dany announced the band’s return next year to the Olympia, news that delighted fans.

“Narcisista” : Dany engage le public, leur demandant de chanter avec elle. Sa voix puissante et émotionnelle est acclamée par la foule.
“Evolve” : Dany annonce que le groupe sera de retour l’année prochaine à l’Olympia, une nouvelle qui réjouit les fans.

The band from Sheffield, Bring Me the Horizon, no longer needs to prove their reputation on the global stage. Their performance was by far the most anticipated of the day, with hysterical groupies clinging to the barriers from the festival’s opening.
All eyes were on the stage as the crew set up. Suddenly, everything went dark, and the screens lit up, projecting an introduction scene in the form of a video game. Screams erupted and phones rose into the sky.

Le groupe originaire de Sheffield, n’a plus à prouver sa réputation sur la scène mondiale. Leur performance était de loin la plus attendue de la journée, et les groupies hystériques étaient accrochées aux barrières dès l’ouverture du festival. Les regards étaient fixés sur la scène tandis que l’équipe technique s’activait.
Soudain, tout devient noir, et les écrans s’allument, projetant une scène d’introduction sous forme de jeu vidéo. Les hurlements retentissent et les téléphones s’élèvent dans le ciel.

The band took the stage and kicked off with “Darkside,” from their latest album, triggering immediate hysteria. At that moment, I wondered how I would manage to take notes, as I was swept away from the first second!
Following with “Empire,” the crowd screamed the lyrics non-stop, then “Mantra” kept the atmosphere at its peak.
During “Teardrops,” Oli shouted, “Everyone must jump!!!” and the crowd complied without hesitation. During “Koolaid,” I thought I might die in the pit, but continued my journey with “Shadow Moses.”

Le groupe entre en scène et ouvre les hostilités avec “Darkside“, extrait de leur dernier album, déclenchant une hystérie immédiate. À ce moment précis, je me demande comment je vais réussir à prendre des notes, tant je suis emporté dès la première seconde!
Enchaînant avec “Empire“, le public hurle les paroles sans relâche, puis c’est “Mantra” qui maintient l’ambiance à son comble.
Sur “Teardrops“, Oli crie “Tout le monde doit sauter !!!” et la foule s’exécute sans hésiter. Sur “Koolaid“, je crois mourir dans le pit, mais je continue mon périple avec “Shadow Moses“.

Oli thanked the crowd for their energy and asked them to jump “Come on, friend” for “Top 10 Statues That Cried Blood.”
It was collective euphoria; I was pushed towards the crash barriers, feeling the heat of the flames caressing my face. It was a surreal moment; I floated while suffocating.
The band momentarily left the stage, and the screens lit up again, displaying:
“Infiltrating next-gen servers”
“Retrograde virus detected”
This announced the featuring with Babymetal on “Kingslayer,” represented by animated images of the group on the stage screen. In the pit, it was total hysteria!

Oli remercie le public pour leur énergie et demande de sauter “Come on, friend” pour “Top 10 Statues That Cried Blood“.
C’est l’euphorie collective, je suis projeté vers les crash barrières et ressens la chaleur des flammes caressant mon visage. C’est un moment lunaire, je plane tout en étouffant.
Le groupe quitte momentanément la scène, et les écrans s’allument de nouveau, affichant :
“Infiltrating next-gen servers”
“Retrograde virus detected”
Cela annonce le featuring avec Babymetal sur “Kingslayer“, représenté par des images animées du groupe sur l’écran de la scène. Dans la fosse, c’est l’hystérie totale!

Before starting “Parasite Eve,” Oli said, “You guys are really, really good.” At the end, he added in French: “Merci beaucoup,” then “Thank you very much, France.” Oli apologized for not being able to sing all the songs he wanted, including “Antivist” (which I had the chance to see at the Graspop Metal Meeting, in a memorable duo with a guy from the crowd).
For “Drown,” Oli descended towards the crash barrier and filmed the crowd with a GoPro. At that moment, the aggression and hysteria of the fans were evident. They grabbed him from all sides, desperately trying to touch their idol. The scene was chaotic, and Oli mimed exhaustion with his tongue out before climbing back on stage for the last verse, proudly wearing an LGBT flag around his neck and a carefully placed stuffed animal behind him.
When he announced “Can You Feel My Heart,” it was total madness. The crowd sang the break, and Oli wore the flag over his face until the end of the set.

Avant de démarrer “Parasite Eve“, Oli nous dit : “You guys are really, really good”. À la fin, il ajoute en français : “Merci beaucoup”, puis “Thank you very much, France”. Oli s’excuse de ne pas pouvoir chanter toutes les chansons qu’il aurait voulu, notamment “Antivist” (que j’avais eu la chance de voir au Graspop Metal Meeting, en duo avec un gars du public offrant une performance mémorable).
Pour “Drown“, Oli descend vers la crash barrière et filme le public avec une GoPro. C’est à ce moment que l’on réalise toute l’agressivité et l’hystérie des fans. Ils l’agrippent de toutes parts, essayant désespérément de toucher leur idole. La scène est chaotique, et Oli mime l’épuisement avec la langue sur le côté avant de remonter sur scène pour le dernier couplet, arborant fièrement un drapeau LGBT autour du cou et une peluche installée avec soin derrière lui.
Quand il annonce “Can You Feel My Heart“, c’est la folie totale. Le public chante le break, et Oli porte le drapeau sur le visage jusqu’à la fin du set.

To announce “Doomed,” an intro video was projected, tracing the band’s evolution; it was highly moving to see all these images retracing their career, their evolution, and their highlights, so much so that tears welled up in my eyes. As soon as the song started, hysteria resumed in the crowd, everyone screaming the lyrics as if their lives depended on it. Oli finished the song lying on the floor.
During “Lost,” Oli offered a hip wiggle and asked the crowd to clap during the break, which they did without hesitation. Oliver concluded: “I had a great time with you tonight, thank you very much.” He thanked the audience about ten times.
The last song: “Throne.” “Everyone must sing and move!!” The flames tore through the sky. For the break, Sykes asked, “Can you do me one last favor?” The crowd screamed “Yeeeees.” “Everybody sit down,” and the pit complied before a final jump.
The audience continued to applaud the band for several minutes. Oli thanked the crowd again and wished them peace and love.
Pyro, flames, lasers, energy, everything was there! As usual, they distributed drumsticks and picks to the crowd. Bring Me the Horizon never disappoints, and there’s always a taste of too little. We always want more because the emotions they make us feel are unique!

Pour annoncer “Doomed“, une vidéo d’intro est projetée, retraçant l’évolution du groupe, c’est hyper émouvant de voir toutes ces images retraçant leur carrière, leur évolution et leurs moments forts, tant et si bien que les larmes me montent aux yeux. Dès que le titre commence, l’hystérie reprend dans le public, chacun hurlant les paroles comme si sa vie en dépendait. Oli termine la chanson allongé au sol.
Sur “Lost“, Oli offre un déhanché de postérieur et demande au public de taper des mains pendant le break, ce qu’il fait évidemment sans hésitation. Oliver conclut : “J’ai passé un bon moment avec vous ce soir, je vous remercie infiniment”. Il remercie le public une bonne dizaine de fois.
Dernière chanson : “Throne“. “Chacun de vous doit chanter et bouger !!” Les flammes déchirent le ciel. Pour le break, Sykes demande : “Pouvez-vous me faire une dernière faveur?” Le public hurle “Yeeeees”. “Everybody sit down,” et la fosse s’exécute avant un jump final.
Le public continue d’applaudir le groupe pendant de longues minutes. Oli remercie encore le public et leur souhaite paix et amour.
Pyro, flammes, lasers, énergie, tout y était! Comme à leur habitude, ils distribuent baguettes et médiators au public. Bring Me the Horizon ne déçoit jamais, et il y a toujours un goût de trop peu. On en veut toujours plus car les émotions qu’ils nous font vivre sont uniques!

The Main Square Festival once again proved why it is one of the most appreciated and awaited festivals of the summer. Despite the constraints imposed by international sports events, the organization maintained an exceptional level of quality, both in terms of programming and hospitality. The diversity of artists and musical genres satisfied all tastes, creating a unique atmosphere where the passion for music was palpable.
Each group, from Landmvrks to Bring Me The Horizon, including The Warning and Nothing But Thieves, managed to captivate and ignite the audience, delivering moments of pure magic and intensity.

En dépit des contraintes imposées par les événements sportifs internationaux, l’organisation a su maintenir un niveau de qualité exceptionnel, tant en termes de programmation que d’accueil. La diversité des artistes et des genres musicaux a permis de satisfaire tous les goûts, créant une ambiance unique où la passion pour la musique était palpable.
