Glazart is about to welcome a band whose reputation speaks for itself. As Kokeshi takes the stage in Paris, one thing quickly becomes clear: their music isn’t just something you listen to, it’s something you experience, fully, the moment the lights go down.

As soon as Nana steps onto the stage, all eyes are on her. Dressed in a long white gown, with red cords wrapped tightly around her hand and wrist, she looks as though she’s stepped straight out of a Japanese folktale. The purity of her appearance immediately clashes with the sheer brutality that’s about to unfold.
The moment the first song begins, she closes the gap between herself and the audience. Within seconds, she’s standing inches away from the front row, nearly face-to-face with the people watching her. Her piercing stare cuts through the crowd while every movement of her body mirrors the music’s rising tension. It becomes obvious almost instantly that, for Kokeshi, the visual performance is every bit as important as the music itself.
What stands out most is Nana‘s transformation. Having met her backstage just moments before the show, the contrast is impossible to ignore. Offstage, she’s incredibly soft-spoken and genuinely kind. Under the stage lights, she’s someone else entirely. Every movement feels instinctive, every scream seems to tear itself out of her without restraint. Saying she looks possessed isn’t an exaggeration, she throws herself into every song with an intensity that’s both mesmerizing and deeply unsettling.
Around her, the rest of the band delivers with remarkable precision. Dreamlike shoegaze passages give way without warning to crushing walls of sound, only to fall back into haunting, almost hypnotic melancholy. Those constant shifts between beauty and violence have become Kokeshi’s trademark, and they’re even more striking in a live setting.
Then there are Nana‘s unmistakable high-pitched screams. They’re the band’s true signature, piercing, haunting, and instantly recognizable. They cut through the room with incredible force, giving every song a character that’s uniquely Kokeshi. It’s easily my favorite part of their sound; hearing those shrieks live feels almost unreal, and they’re unlike anything else in the scene.

One of the evening’s biggest highlights was “Rokudou no Tsuji.” Already a standout on record, the song takes on an entirely new dimension live, elevated by Nana’s deeply emotional performance and the band’s crushing intensity. It was undoubtedly one of the most powerful moments of the set.
A few songs later, “Ningen ni Kaeru” delivered what was arguably the night’s most unforgettable moment. Mid-song, Nana set her microphone aside and continued screaming completely a cappella. With no amplification, her voice ripped through the silence of Glazart with almost unbelievable force. For a few seconds, time seemed to stand still as the entire room watched in stunned silence.
Throughout the performance, Kokeshi let the music speak for itself, barely saying a word between songs. Each track flowed seamlessly into the next beneath deep red and icy blue lighting, while thick clouds of smoke constantly blanketed the stage. The result was an atmosphere that felt beautiful, unsettling, and utterly hypnotic from beginning to end.
As the set came to a close, Naroccon, a close friend of the band, stepped onstage to explain that, due to shipping issues, most of the band’s merchandise hadn’t made it to Paris in time. A handful of CDs were still available, and fans were encouraged to stop by the merch table, where the band would happily chat, sign items, and take photos with everyone. It was a heartfelt way to wrap up their first European tour while staying true to the warmth and gratitude they showed their supporters throughout the evening.

With this unforgettable Paris performance, Kokeshi proves it is far more than just a post-hardcore or shoegaze band. It’s a fully immersive live experience, driven by a vocalist whose striking contrast between her gentle offstage personality and her overwhelming onstage intensity leaves a lasting impression. Haunting, captivating, and unlike anything else, this was a performance that will undoubtedly stand as one of the most memorable shows of the year.
