Somewhere Between Calculated Psych and Full-Blown Symphony Madness

With nearly thirty studio albums under their belt in just over a decade, including their latest, Phantom Island, recorded with a full strings-and-brass section—tonight in Paris we’re in for one hell of a bold performance. The Australians are playing the entire album live, front to back, backed by the Lamoureux Orchestra conducted by Chad Kelly. The concept is already wild, but the band takes it a step further: the orchestra backing them changes from country to country.

Entre psyché raisonnée et folie symphonique

Avec près de trente albums studio à leur actif en un peu plus de dix ans, dont le dernier en date, « phantom island » (enregistré avec des cordes et cuivres en accompagnement), ce soir à Paris, nous allons assister à une prestation des plus osées. En effet, les Australiens interprètent l’album en live, dans l’ordre, accompagnés par l’orchestre Lamoureux dirigé par Chad Kelly. Ce projet est déjà original, mais les Australiens poussent le délire encore plus loin : l’orchestre qui les accompagne change à chaque pays.

No opener tonight, we’re diving straight into the thick of it. It’s also worth pointing out that the band is letting the photographers in attendance (myself lucky enough to be one of them) shoot the entire show. That’s a real rarity these days. The album’s ten tracks are played in the same order as on the vinyl, just like I mentioned earlier. The live version gives the songs a new spin, way more orchestral than on the record, without ever drifting into something repetitive or heavy-handed. Everything flows, and the amount of work behind it all really shows just how ambitious this band is.

Pas de première partie ce soir, on rentre directement dans le vif du sujet. Notons également que le groupe autorise les photographes présents (dont j’ai la chance de faire partie) à shooter l’intégralité du show ! Une rareté à souligner. Les dix titres de l’album sont joués dans le même ordre que sur vinyle, comme je l’ai dit précédemment. Le live offre une réinterprétation des morceaux, beaucoup plus orchestrale que sur l’album, sans tomber dans la lassitude ou la lourdeur. Le tout est cohérent, et le travail effectué témoigne de l’ambition du groupe.

The orchestra blends right into the band, the three vocals melt into the instrumentation, and the whole thing spills out into the crowd, packed with tons of international fans following the band on tour, all looking absolutely thrilled. Some folks, though, seem a bit less convinced, clearly waiting for the more psych-heavy-garage part of the show to kick in. When the orchestra steps out for a twenty-minute break, KGATLW stay onstage. No downtime, no encore games. We jump straight into the second half of the concert. The understated staging from the orchestral set suddenly gives way to massive screens and explosive lighting, topped off with strobe effects. The long-awaited Rattlesnake sends the pit completely nuts, with the whole crowd shouting the lyrics at the top of their lungs. You can feel the whole vibe and energy of the night flip instantly. Everyone lets loose, and it’s intense in the best possible way.

L’orchestre se mêle aux musiciens, les trois voix du groupe se fondent aux instruments, et le tout se mêle à la salle, qui compte énormément d’étrangers suivant le groupe sur la tournée et semblant plus que comblés. Certains spectateurs restent toutefois moins convaincus, attendant patiemment la partie plus psyché-heavy-garage du show.
Alors que l’orchestre fait une pause d’une vingtaine de minutes, KGATLW restent sur scène. Pas de temps mort, pas de rappel. On passe à la deuxième partie du concert. La mise en scène, sobre avec l’orchestre, laisse place à des écrans et jeux de lumières explosifs, mêlés à des effets stroboscopiques.
Le très attendu Rattlesnake  rend la fosse complètement dingue, et tout le monde reprend en chœur les paroles ! On sent que le concert change radicalement d’ambiance et d’énergie. Tout le monde se lâche, et c’est intense à vivre.

The orchestra eventually comes back in, still a big part of the show, but not as front-and-center as during the first half. When Crumbling Castle kicks off, we’re right back in that familiar King Gizz energy: a crowd jumping, screaming, crowd-surfing, and blowing their voices out all together. And they don’t stop there. The back-to-back punch of Mars For The Rich and Dragon totally hits the spot for the heavier fans. Let’s just say the pit is nowhere near calming down, quite the opposite. After more than two hours and ten minutes, the night wraps up with the jazzy Iron Lung. The band gives a warm thank-you to the crowd, handing out setlists and drumsticks on their way out. Some people walked away absolutely thrilled, others maybe a bit puzzled or even thrown off, but one thing’s for sure: this band never stops breaking the mold. They refuse to run in circles, they’re not afraid to grow older with their art, even if it means sticking out. Tonight, musicality clearly won out over sheer madness.

L’orchestre revient ensuite, mis à contribution évidemment, mais à moindre mesure que lors de la première partie. Sur Crumbling Castle , on retrouve les sensations et énergies habituelles d’un concert de nos Australiens préférés : un public qui bouge, hurle, surfe et s’époumone à l’unisson !
On n’en reste pas là : l’enchaînement de Mars For The RICH  et Dragon  satisfait les fans les plus heavy. Autant vous dire que ça ne se calme pas dans la fosse, bien au contraire !
La soirée s’achève après plus de deux heures dix de concert sur le jazzy Iron Lung. Le groupe remercie chaleureusement le public, distribue setlists et baguettes de batterie.
Certains seront comblés par cette soirée, d’autres plus déçus, peut-être surpris même, mais il est indéniable que ce groupe ne cesse de casser les codes, ne tourne jamais en rond, ose vieillir avec son art, quitte à détonner. La musicalité aura emporté la bataille face à la folie pure dans cette soirée.

I absolutely loved this trip into the KGLW universe, a kind of organized chaos, a wild coherence that shoots off in every direction, a controlled madness, an overflowing energy somehow kept in check, everything and its opposite all at once. It’s the kind of show that makes you feel every emotion, every sensation, every surge of energy. One minute it comforts you, holds your hand, the next it smacks you awake and drags you straight out of your comfort zone. It was beautiful, it was alive, it was King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard in Paris.

J’ai adoré ce voyage dans l’univers des KGLW : un bordel organisé, une cohérence qui part dans toutes les directions, une folie maîtrisée, une énergie débordante canalisée, le tout et son contraire. Le genre de concert qui te fait passer par toutes les émotions, sensations et énergies. Qui te rassure, te prend par la main, et qui t’en colle une et te sort de ta zone de confort l’instant d’après. C’était beau, c’était vivant, c’était King Gizzard and The Lizard Wizard à Paris !
