It seems that a good portion of the extreme metal scene had gathered at the Élysée Montmartre on Wednesday, March 4, for a particularly packed lineup: Heaven Shall Burn (headlining), The Halo Effect, The Black Dahlia Murder, and Frozen Soul. 

We’re used to it by now, this kind of night feels almost like a mini indoor festival, this time with themes ranging from brutally old-school to Scandinavian melodies, which a good portion of the audience was clearly fond of and dressed for, hair and all. So yes, this time it wasn’t packed to the rafters or sold out, but who cares? The atmosphere was already electric from the very first minutes, with a pretty broad mix of generations and genres, metal really does bring people together, doesn’t it?

Il faut croire qu’une bonne partie de la scène metal extrême s’était donné rendez-vous à l’Élysée Montmartre ce mercredi 4 mars avec un prog particulièrement dense : Heaven Shall Burn (la tête d’affiche), The Halo Effect, The Black Dahlia Murder et Frozen Soul.

On a maintenant l’habitude, ce genre de soirée ressemblerait presque à un mini-festival en salle, cette fois-ci avec des thématiques oscillant entre du old school bien brutal et des mélodies scandinave dont une bonne partie du public étaient visiblement friands et vêtue en conséquence, cheveux compris. Alors oui, cette fois ce n’est pas plein à craquer ni à guichet fermé mais qu’importe, l’ambiance est déjà bouillante dès les premières minutes avec un mix générationnel et de genre ma foi assez large, le metal sait rapprocher les peuples non ?

I’ll admit it, I hadn’t heard of these Texans from Frozen Soul, and it was a heavy burden to bear since they were tasked with kicking things off, and yeah, they didn’t take their role lightly, despite a minimalist stage setup. 

So we’re treated to some very ’90s-style death metal, heavy and straight to the point—even if it took a while to get going. So I’m discovering the band’s repertoire, and I particularly enjoyed “Encased in Ice” with its old-school riffs and impressive energy, much like frontman Chad Green, who held his own with his heavy yet precise vocals throughout the 30-minute set. The band never goes for subtlety: every song is a head-on assault, a compact wall of sound that pushes the headbanging crowd along through the few groovy passages, which I really didn’t hate, quite the opposite. A great discovery despite my relatively limited interest in the genre.

The venue is filling up little by little, and the first circle pits are appearing, admittedly timidly, but the atmosphere is heating up.

Je l’avoue, je ne connaissais pas ces Texans de Frozen Soul, et la charge s’avère lourde puisqu’ils avaient comme mission d’ouvrir les hostilités, et ouais,  ils n’ont pas pris leur rôle à la légère malgré un setup scène minimaliste.

On a donc droit à un Death Metal très 90’s, très lourd et qui va droit au but même si le temps d’allumage s’est fait désirer. Je découvre donc le répertoire du groupe et j’ai particulièrement apprécié “Encased in Ice” avec ses riffs à l’ancienne et une énergie impressionnante, à l’image du frontman Chad Green qui n’a pas démérité de sa voix lourde mais juste pendant les 30 minutes du set. Le groupe ne cherche jamais la subtilité : chaque morceau est une charge frontale, un mur de son compact qui pousse le public headbanger sur les quelques passages groovies que je n’ai vraiment pas détestés, bien au contraire. Une belle découverte malgré mon attirance toute relative pour le genre.

La salle se remplit petit à petit et les premiers circle pits apparaissent certes timidement mais le siège est chaud.

Things take a radical turn with The Black Dahlia Murder. Much faster, and also… more old school. Here, we’re dealing with old-school long-haired guys who love speed, precise riffs, and more catchy melodies.

The rhythm immediately heats things up in the pit. The songs come one after another at breakneck speed, leaving almost no respite. “What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse” (Castlevania fans will get the reference) instantly triggers the first serious mosh pits, while “Nightbringers” and “Everything Went Black” cause organized chaos, or maybe not.

Despite some fans having questions about the band’s new lineup, the performance remains solid and effective, driven by raw energy and a setlist that hits the mark. Personally, I’m not as big a fan, but the guys have such energy that they won me over.

On change radicalement de registre avec The Black Dahlia Murder. Bien plus Speed et aussi… plus old school. Ici on est entre chevelus à l’ancienne qui aiment la vitesse, les riffs de précision et les mélodies plus identifiables.

Les rythmes fait alors alors immédiatement monter la température dans la fosse. Les morceaux s’enchaînent à toute allure, sans quasiment laisser de répit. “What a Horrible Night to Have a Curse” (les fans de Castlevania auront la ref)  déclenche instantanément les premiers pogos sérieux, tandis que “Nightbringers” et “Everything Went Black” provoquent un chaos organisé, ou pas.

Malgré quelques interrogations chez certains fans sur la nouvelle configuration du groupe, la prestation reste solide et efficace, portée par une énergie brute et une setlist qui fait mouche. A titre personnel je suis moins fan mais les gars ont une énergie telle que mon intention était captée.

The Halo Effect is the third band to take the stage, and once again, the contrast is immediate. After two bands that spent the evening running us over, their arrival almost feels like a breather… well, a Gothenburg-style breather, meaning guitars weeping out melodies but still enough double-pedal drumming to rip the floorboards off the Élysée Montmartre.

The set kicks off with “March of the Unheard”, and you immediately recognize the Swedish formula: harmonized guitars, catchy melodies, and choruses that get stuck in your head. It’s simple, after two songs, even the guys in the back of the room were into it; I know because I was right there with them, pint in hand.

The crowd gets particularly enthusiastic during “Shadowminds”, probably the most unifying moment of the set but also the band’s most mainstream track. The whole room starts nodding their heads and bobbing their necks. We’re all ready for the final wave…

The Halo Effect est le troisième groupe à monter sur scène et une nouvelle fois, le contraste est immédiat. Après deux formations qui ont passé la soirée à nous rouler dessus, leur arrivée fait presque l’effet d’une pause… enfin, une pause version Göteborg, donc avec des guitares qui pleurent des mélodies mais toujours assez de double pédale pour décoller le parquet de l’Élysée Montmartre.

Le set démarre avec “March of the Unheard”, et on reconnaît immédiatement la recette suédoise : guitares harmonisées, mélodies accrocheuses et refrains qui s’incrustent dans le cerveau. C’est simple, au bout de deux morceaux, même les types au fond de la salle étaient dedans, je le sais j’étais avec eux pinte à la main.
Le public devient particulièrement enthousiaste sur “Shadowminds”, probablement le moment le plus fédérateur du set mais aussi le plus maintsream du groupe. Toute la salle se met à hocher du pif et à mouliner du cou. On est tous fins prêts pour la dernière vague..

It’s around 9:45 p.m. when the lights go out for the last time. The crowd had clearly come for them.

Heaven Shall Burn takes the stage with the confidence of a band that knows its audience inside out. From the very first riffs, the pit transforms into a battlefield and thickens to the point where it almost feels like a packed house, even though the venue is far from sold out.

The band plays the songs with impressive intensity. The breaks are tailor-made for circle pits, the riffs strike like hammer blows, and the crowd responds instantly. It must be said that these Germans have already cut their teeth in this kind of setting and know exactly what they’re doing, as exemplified by Marcus Bischoff, who creates moments of connection through eye contact with an audience perfectly in sync with the headbanging.

At that moment, no one is thinking about their Thursday morning at work, staring at lukewarm coffee. All that matters is the raw energy flooding the venue in that moment.

Il est environ 21h45 lorsque les lumières s’éteignent une dernière fois. La masse était visiblement venue pour eux.

Heaven Shall Burn entre en scène avec l’assurance d’un groupe qui connaît parfaitement son public. Dès les premiers riffs, la fosse se transforme en champ de bataille et densifie le Pit, au point qu’on aurait presque l’impression d’une salle comble malgré un sold out loin d’être atteint.

Le groupe les morceaux avec une intensité impressionnante. Les breaks sont taillés pour les circle pits, les riffs frappent comme des coups de marteau et la foule répond instantanément. Il faut dire que ces allemands ont déjà roulé leur bosse sur ce type de configuration et savent parfaitement y faire à l’image de Marcus Bischoff qui enchaîne les moments de communions via eye contacts avec un public particulièrement synchro sur le hachage de tête.

À ce moment-là, plus personne à son jeudi matin au taf les yeux dans le café tiède. Tout ce qui compte, c’est l’énergie brute qui envahit la salle en cet instant.

By the end of the night, I’m reminded once again that the metal scene is very much alive, and that even the least mainstream subgenres still have a dedicated fanbase willing to travel far and wide to see their favorite bands, no matter how many years have passed. The Elysée Montmartre may not have been sold out that night, but with the warmth, the smiles, and the energy radiating from the crowd, it felt just the same.

A la fin de cette soirée je retiens une nouvelle fois que la scène Metal est encore largement en vie et que même les subgenre les moins mainstream comptent encore une belle base de fans capables de faire de la route pour voir leurs groupes de coeurs malgré les années. L’Elysée Montmartre n’affiche peut-être pas complet ce soir-là mais avec la chaleur, les sourires et l’énergie déployée par la public, c’était tout comme.
