A Mancunian Madness Wave Hits Paris

For the second stop of their brand-new tour, and more than ten years since their last time in the French capital, the Mancunians (from Salford to be precise) rolled into the legendary Élysée Montmartre.

The crowd was mostly packed with folks in their forties and fifties, fired up and ready to go, everyone buzzing to catch this iconic band. But the real question was: what do the Mondays sound like in 2025?

Sure, time has gone by, the wild days of youth are written on their faces, but still, there’s something special about seeing the torchbearers of Madchester walk back on stage.

Pour la deuxième date de leur nouvelle tournée et après plus de dix ans depuis leur dernier passage dans la capitale, les Mancuniens (de Salford précisément) font escale dans la mythique salle de l’Élysée Montmartre.

Le public est composé majoritairement de quadras et quinquagénaires, chauffé à blanc, tout le monde a hâte de voir ce groupe mythique. Mais alors, qu’est-ce que ça vaut les Mondays en 2025 ?

Alors, certes, le temps a passé, les excès de jeunesse sont visibles et pourtant, ça fait quand même quelque chose quand on voit débarquer les fers de lance du Madchester.

After a short intro of shadows and strobe lights, they hit us straight in the face with “Kinky Afro”, the perfect way to kick off the night. On stage things looked pretty chill, but then there’s the legendary Bez. Still iconic as ever, the man with the maracas busts out those wild dance moves that made him a legend in the first place.

Fun moment of the night: he spots my Man U jersey, comes straight over between songs, gives me a fist bump and yells to the crowd that I’m the coolest guy in the room ‘cause I’m rocking the best shirt. A sweet exchange and a memory burned into my head.

But back to the show. The band sounded tight, the vocals solid, and the chemistry between Shaun Ryder and Firouzeh Berry (Bez’s wife) on vocals was a real highlight.

Between the guitars and waves of synths, it was easy to get swept away by the vibe. As the show rolled on, the energy in the pit started to climb higher and higher, fans in the front rows jumping and dancing harder with every song. And with a setlist stacked with “Hallelujah”, the cult classic “24 Hour Party People”, and of course “Step On”, it was impossible not to lose yourself in the moment.

Après une petite intro entre pénombre et stroboscopes, on se prend direct « Kinky Afro » dans les dents, de quoi lancer magnifiquement la soirée. Sur scène, c’est plutôt calme, mais c’est sans compter sur le mythique Bez. Toujours aussi iconique, l’homme aux maracas nous livre ses mouvements de danse qui ont forgé sa légende. Fun fact de la soirée : lorsqu’il remarque mon maillot de Man U, il se dirige vers moi entre deux chansons, me check en hurlant à la foule que je suis le mec le plus cool de la soirée car je porte le meilleur maillot.

Un échange sympathique et des souvenirs gravés dans la tête.

Mais revenons à notre concert.

Ça joue correctement, ça chante bien, notons la belle complicité au chant entre Shaun Ryder et Firouzeh Berry (l’épouse de Bez).

Entre guitare et nappes de synthé, on se laisse transporter par le bon moment que l’on vit. La fin du show va monter en intensité, la fosse se lâche de plus en plus, on voit dans les premiers rangs des fans sauter et danser beaucoup plus énergiquement. Il faut dire que la setlist s’y prête puisqu’on va avoir le droit à des « Hallelujah », le culte « 24 Hour Party People » ou encore « Step On ».

A quick encore and then they were gone. The band stepped off stage for just a brief moment before coming back to close the night with “Wrote For Luck.” They thanked the Paris crowd warmly, then disappeared for good after about an hour and fifteen minutes on stage.

The audience seemed pretty satisfied overall. Sure, it wasn’t the concert of the century, but it was still a solid performance, and for me, the sheer joy of checking another legendary band off my live bucket list.

Un petit rappel et puis s’en va. Le groupe quitte la scène un très, très court instant et revient pour le dernier morceau de la soirée, « Wrote For Luck », remercie chaleureusement le public parisien avant de s’éclipser pour de bon après environ une heure et quart de spectacle.

Les spectateurs semblent plutôt satisfaits dans l’ensemble. Nous n’avons pas assisté au concert du siècle, certes, mais une bonne performance malgré tout, et personnellement une grande joie de cocher un autre groupe mythique à ma liste des groupes vus en live.
