Last night, May 25, Inner Terrestrials set the Kilowatt stage alight. Initially, I was going for the fun of it, but this band deserves to be talked about. The first time I saw them, I was 17 years old, and now, at 36, their performance is as striking as ever!

Inner Terrestrials, often abbreviated IT!, are a legendary dub, ska and punk band from Brixton. Pioneers of the genre, they are celebrating 30 years in the business with an instantly recognizable sound. Fran Webber‘s soaring bass, Ben Swan‘s energetic drums and Jay Terrestrials‘ guitar-vocals mark their unique musical identity. Their incisive lyrics tackle themes such as political criticism, anarchy, animal rights and welfare, and social inequality.

The concert kicked off with “Earth Must”, instantly setting the mood. On the track “Chain”, an incident disturbed the scene when a cup landed near Jay. Without losing his composure, he reminded the audience of the rules of politeness, asking if this was really the way to welcome a band. Without lingering, he followed up with “Smoke”, then tracks like “War” and “Movin On” created memorable moments, being among my favorites of the set.

The end of the set was a real apotheosis. The screams of the audience echoed for a long time, clamoring for more music. The band, visibly delighted, would gladly have played longer, but the organization decided otherwise. 

The only fly in the ointment was that I couldn’t understand why IT! took to the Oasis stage. With their reputation and the quality of their performance, they deserved to perform on the main stage, La Centrale. Having made the trip mainly for them and for Demented Are Go, who unfortunately cancelled, I was disappointed by this logistical choice.

All in all, Inner Terrestrials proved once again that they are undisputed masters of their genre, delivering a performance as hard-hitting as when I was young. An unforgettable concert that confirms their status as dub, ska and punk legends

Hier soir, le 25 mai, Inner Terrestrials a enflammé la scène du Kilowatt. Initialement, je m’y rendais pour le fun, mais ce groupe mérite qu’on parle d’eux. La première fois que je les ai vus, j’avais 17 ans, et aujourd’hui, à 36 ans, leur performance est toujours aussi saisissante !

Inner Terrestrials, souvent abrégé IT!, est un groupe légendaire de dub, ska et punk, originaire de Brixton. Pionniers du genre, ils célèbrent 30 ans de carrière avec un son immédiatement reconnaissable. La basse de Fran Webber, avec ses harmoniques planants, la batterie énergique de Ben Swan, et la guitare-voix de Jay Terrestrials, marquent leur identité musicale unique. Leurs paroles incisives abordent des thèmes tels que les critiques politiques, l’anarchie, les droits et le bien-être animal, et les inégalités sociales.

Le concert a débuté en force avec “Earth Must”, mettant instantanément l’ambiance. Sur le morceau “Chain”, un incident est venu troubler la scène lorsqu’un gobelet a atterri près de Jay. Sans perdre son calme, il a rappelé les règles de politesse au public, demandant si c’était vraiment une façon d’accueillir un groupe. Sans s’attarder, il a enchaîné avec “Smoke”, puis des morceaux comme “War” et “Movin On” ont créé des moments mémorables, étant parmi mes préférés du set.

La fin du set a été un véritable apothéose. Les hurlements du public ont résonné longtemps, réclamant plus de musique. Le groupe, visiblement ravi, aurait volontiers joué plus longtemps, mais l’organisation en a décidé autrement. 

Seule ombre au tableau, je n’ai pas compris pourquoi IT! s’est produit sur la scène de L’Oasis. Avec leur notoriété et la qualité de leur performance, ils méritaient de se produire sur la scène principale, la Centrale. Ayant fait le déplacement principalement pour eux et pour Demented Are Go, qui malheureusement a annulé, j’étais déçu par ce choix logistique.

En somme, Inner Terrestrials a prouvé une fois de plus qu’ils sont des maîtres incontestés de leur genre, offrant une performance aussi percutante que lors de ma jeunesse. Un concert inoubliable qui confirme leur statut de légende du dub, ska et punk.
