On November 5th, singer-songwriter Asaf Avidan treated us to an intimate show. For the second Paris date of his Unfurl Tour, the artist managed to pack the Grand Rex to full capacity. Here’s a look back at a moving, deeply heartfelt performance that kept the audience captivated for more than two hours.

To kick off the evening and set the mood, French artist Lemofil took the stage. Poetic, intense, and gripping, he delivered rap lines and spoken-word pieces with striking accuracy, pulling the audience far into his world. His words and songs carry a raw beauty and sensitivity that define his artistry. No one could walk away untouched by the atmosphere he created.

Le 5 novembre dernier, l’auteur compositeur interprète Asaf Avidan nous a offert un show intimiste. Pour sa seconde date parisienne de sa tournée “Unfurl tour“, l’artiste a reussi à remplir entièrement la salle du Grand Rex à Paris. Retour sur un show touchant et profond qui aura comblé la salle durant plus de deux heures.

Afin d’ouvrir la soirée et mettre le public dans l’ambiance, l’artiste français Lemofil est venu sur scène. Poétique, intense, prenant, l’artiste nous rappe, interprète des mots justes qui transportent loin. Sensible et beau caractérisent les mots et les chansons de ce jeune artiste. Nulle ne peut rester insensible à ce que son univers dégage.

Then, at last, the long-awaited Asaf Avidan stepped onto the stage. He appeared in an intimate set designed like a 1930s living room, introduced moments earlier through a vintage TV broadcast from the same era. The whole scene evoked silent-film aesthetics and old-school theater, almost vaudeville-like. The crowd was instantly hooked. Avidan opened with two singles from his latest studio album Unfurl: first ‘The Call of the Flow’, then ‘I Don’t Know When, I Don’t Know How, I Don’t Know Why.’ The audience was thrilled, not just by his arrival, but by the sheer presence he brought with him. He quickly shared that this concert was meant to be an introspective journey for all of us, diving deep into our own souls. He even slipped in a few words of French along the way. Avidan also made it clear that the Grand Rex show was entirely live, with no backing tracks. Just him, his band, and the beautiful unpredictability of live music, celebrating the craft of performance itself. Sharing the stage with him were four musician-vocalists: two women (on bass/guitar and synth) and two men (on synth and drums).

Puis, arrive enfin l’attendu Asaf Avidan sur scène. C’est dans un décor intimiste, ressemblant à un salon des années 1930 qu’il arrive après avoir été annoncé par une télévision de cette même époque. Le décor fait écho au cinéma muet et aux pièces de théâtre telles que le vaudeville. Le public est de suite emballé. Asaf Avidan fait son entrée sur deux singles de son dernier album studio appelé “Unfurl“. Il débute par “The call of the flow” et enchaine avec “I don’t know when, I don’t know how, I don’t why“. L’audience est plus que ravie de son arrivée, de sa prestance. Il nous indique rapidement que son concert va être un moyen pour nous de faire un voyage introspectif dans notre âme. Il en profite également pour nous glisser quelques phrases en français. Asaf Avidan nous indique également que son concert au Grand Rex est exclusivement en live, sans bande son. Uniquement, lui, ses musiciens et les aléas du live pour célébrer l’amour de la musique et des concerts. Sur scène avec lui on retrouve quatre musiciens/chœurs : deux femmes (basse/guitare et synthé) ainsi que deux hommes (synthé et batterie)

The vibe turns jazzy and cozy. The stage, set up like the inside of a vintage living room, is filled with old furniture, armchairs, a coat rack, even a small bar stocked with glasses and drinks where Asaf Avidan helps himself between songs. The whole atmosphere feels like stepping into an old movie, somewhere between Peaky Blinders and a classic musical. Avidan moves seamlessly through tracks like ‘Lost Horses’ (from his album Anagnorisis), ‘Rock of Lazarus’, and ‘Different Pulses’. His vocal power hits hard, carrying waves of emotion, especially during ‘Anagnorisis’, the title track of the album. The beauty of the Grand Rex, the staging, the tour’s aesthetic, they all pull the room into another realm. A sense of transcendence fills the space with songs like ‘Darkness Song’ and ‘The Great Abyss’. Between moments of intensity, Avidan reveals himself to be not just magnetic, but genuinely funny.

This intimate cabaret, laced with subtle Middle Eastern touches, serves as a reminder of what he told us earlier: the goal is to escape the outside world for a while. Here, music isn’t about running away, it’s about turning inward. So when the crowd reacts a little too enthusiastically at the start of ‘One Day / Reckoning Song’, he pauses to explain why and how the track was written. Born out of a breakup and a heated argument, the song came together quickly, and, as we know, it was the remix that eventually shot him into mainstream popularity.

After the encore, Avidan tells us that the goal isn’t to end the night on a “feel-good” note, quite the opposite. He closes with ‘Unfurling Dream’ and the devastating ‘Between These Hands’, performed solely on piano and vocals. It’s a final blow straight to the heart, meant to stick with us long after we leave the venue. By the time the last notes fade, the chills are still running down our skin, and the tears haven’t completely dried. Asaf Avidan proves once again that he’s one of the most striking, powerful, and elegant artists of his generation.

L’ambiance est jazzy, cozy. La scène représentant l’intérieur d’un salon est également équipée de meubles, fauteuil, porte manteau, d’un bar avec des verre et de boisson où ira se servir Asaf Avidan entre deux morceaux. Une ambiance d’anciens films, presque à la Peaky Blinders voire aux comédies musicales d’époque. Asaf Avidan enchaînera les titres tels que “Lost Horses” (single tirée de l’album “Anagnorisis“), “Rock of Lazarus“, ou encore “Different Pulses“. Sa puissance vocale nous transportera vraiment avec énormément d’émotions grâce à sa chanson “Agnanorisis” (single d’un album eponyme). La beauté de salle du Grand Rex, le décor, le tour combiné nous emmènent également dans une dimension. Une transcendance créée avec les titres tels que “Darkness Song“, “The Great Abyss“. Entre temps, Asaf Avidan se révèle être, en plus d’un charmant personnage, d’un humour plaisant. 

Ce cabaret intimiste teinté de notes arabes. L’artiste nous rappelle que le but de ce show est de s’échapper quelques temps du monde extérieur. La musique ici est jouée comme introspection, non pas comme une évasion. Asaf Avidan, en voyant l’entrain très (trop) positif durant le début de “One Day / Reckoning Song” expliquera pourquoi cette chanson a été écrite et surtout dans quel contexte. En effet, c’est lors d’une dispute et rupture amoureuse qu’il écrira rapidement et efficacement. Rappelons également que c’est un remix de ce titre qui l’aura rendu populaire auprès du grand public.

Asaf nous rappellera après son rappel qu’avant que chacun rentre chez soi, le but n’est pas de terminer sur une note positive, au contraire. Il enchaînera “Unfurling Dream” et le déchirant “Between these hands“. Cette dernière chanson pour clore le concert en apogée en piano / voix uniquement. Le but est bel et bien que nous rentrions chez nous marqués au plus profond de notre âme par Asaf Avidan.
