Hooverphonic at Alhambra Paris

When the Belgian band Hooverphonic arrive at the Alhambra, they come with their own sound and lighting console, a stage technician, a sound manager, a lighting manager, a back liner and their lovely manager. Everything is written down and numbered, each microphone stand is numbered according to the microphone that goes with it, etc. It’s really impressive to see how they get on. One thing’s for sure, you’re not going to a hardcore or punk concert in a cellar!

In addition to the technicians, there are two guitarists, a bassist, a drummer, a keyboardist, three violinists, a cellist and, of course, a singer.

The whole team, accompanied by their bus driver, arrive in good spirits, smiling despite the road, and the enthusiasm is palpable.

Quand le groupe belge Hooverphonic arrive à l’Alhambra, ils arrivent avec leur propre console son et lumière, un technicien plateau, un régisseur son, un régisseur lumière un back liner, et leur adorable manageuse. Ils sont hyper carrés et professionnels, tout et noté et numéroté chaque pied de micro est numéroté en fonction du micro qui va avec etc. C’est vraiment très impressionnant de voir autant de professionnalisme, une chose est sûre, on ne va pas assister à un concert de hardcore ou de punk dans une cave ! 

C’est une grosse équipe qui arrive, en effet en plus des techniciens il y a deux guitaristes, un bassiste, un batteur, un claviériste, trois violonistes, un violoncelliste et évidemment une chanteuse.

Toute cette équipe accompagnée, de leur chauffeur de bus, débarque dans la bonne humeur, les visages sont souriants malgré la route, et l’enthousiasme est palpable.

Once all the equipment has been set up, it’s time for lunch, a well-deserved break for the whole team, who haven’t had time to take a breather since they got off the tour bus.

While the artists digest and relax in their dressing rooms before starting the sound check, the technicians check the equipment.

Un fois avoir installé tout le matériel, il est l’heure du déjeuner, une pause douceur bien mérité pour toute l’équipe, qui n’a pas pris le temps de souffler à leur descente du tour bus.

Pendant que les artistes digèrent et se détendent en loge tranquillement avant d’entamer les balances, les techniciens vérifient les équipements.

The sound and light checks are carried out with all the musicians, a crucial stage in guaranteeing a quality show. I go to the sound check thinking I’ll see a few parts of songs, but in the end I’m treated to full Hooverphonic songs and Geike Arnaert gives me the shivers – her voice is so soft and powerful, it almost sounds innovative! It’s only the sound check and I’m already touched to the core! The concert looks promising!

Next up is Pieter Peirsman, guitarist and backing vocalist for Hooverphonic, but also singer/guitarist in the band Slow Pilot, who stays on stage to do the sound check. What I’m hearing on the sound check sounds pretty good to me!

Les balances sont cruciales, les test sons et lumières sont effectués avec tous les musiciens, c’est une étape primordiale pour garantir un spectacle de qualité. J’assiste aux balances en me disant que je verrais quelques parties de morceaux, mais finalement j’ai le droit à des chansons complètes de Hooverphonic et Geike Arnaert me donne des frissons, sa voix est si douce et puissante, qu’elle semble presqu’innée ! Ce ne sont que les balances et je suis déjà touché en plein cœur ! Le concert s’annonce prometteur !!!

Vient ensuite le tour de Pieter Peirsman, guitariste et voix secondaire de Hooverphonic, mais également chanteur guitariste au sein du groupe Slow Pilot, qui reste donc sur scène afin de faire les balances, il fera la première partie, petite surprise, ce sera une version allégée, en effet il est seul sur scène. Ce que j’entends sur les balances me semble en tous les cas, très sympa !

I go out to the front of the venue during the band’s dinner to see if the audience is arriving, and it’s a shock when I see this queue stretching to the end of the street, and for good reason – the concert is sold out!

As the audience slowly makes its way in concert hall, in the dressing room, you can feel the excitement, a violinist is playing scales in the corridor, you can hear the vocals, the fingers getting excited on the strings, then Geike takes some time to relax by doing a bit of yoga.

Laughter echoes the cries of excitement that can be heard in the hall. And some are already rushing to the merch.

Je sors devant la salle pendant le diner du groupe pour voir si le public arrive, et c’est un choc quand j’aperçois cette queue qui va jusqu’au bout de la rue, et pour cause le concert est Sold Out !

Pendant que le public rentre petit à petit, en loge on sent l’excitation, un violoniste fais des gammes dans le couloir, on entend les vocalises, les doigts qui s’excitent sur les cordes, puis Geike prend du temps pour se détendre en faisant un peu de Yoga. 

Les rires font échos aux cris d’excitation qu’on peut entendre dans la salle. Et certains se précipitent déjà au merch.

Pieter is the first male voice in Hooverphonic, but he’s also worked with K’s Choice and jazz pianist Jef Neve, so he’s no novice on stage!

When Pieter takes to the stage, armed only with his guitar and his voice, the atmosphere is charged with emotion from the start, and the audience expresses its enthusiasm throughout the set. Murmurs of approval quickly turn to cheers as Pieter begins to sing, prompting comments such as “he has an incredible voice!”

He may be alone on stage, but Pieter manages to captivate the audience with his undeniable charisma. His presence and passion fill the space and warm the heart, creating a charming connection with the audience.

Every note of his guitar and every nuance of his voice takes the audience on an emotional journey, oscillating between the raw intensity of indie rock and the moving sensibility of alternative rock.

Pieter demonstrated during his set that even alone on stage, he was more than capable of making his music shine!

His set naturally ended in a round of applause!

Pour vous peindre le portrait de cet artiste qui se produit solo ce soir, Pieter est la première voix masculine de Hooverphonic mais il a également collaboré avec K’s Choice et le pianiste de jazz Jef Neve, donc ce n’est pas un débutant qui arrive sur scène !

Quand Pieter arrive sur les planches, uniquement armé de sa guitare et de sa voix, l’atmosphère est chargée d’émotion dès le début, le public exprime son enthousiasme tout au long du set. Les murmures d’approbation se transforment vite en acclamation dès que Pieter commence à chanter, suscitant des commentaires tels que « il a une voix incroyable ! »

Il est peut-être seul sur scène, mais Pieter parvient parfaitement à captiver l’audience avec son charisme indéniable. Sa présence et sa passion remplissent l’espace et réchauffe le cœur, ce qui crée une connexion charmante avec le public.

Chaque note de guitare et chaque nuance de sa voix transporte le public dans un voyage émotionnel, oscillant entre l’intensité brute de l’indie rock et la sensibilité émouvante de l’alternative rock.

Pieter a démontré pendant son set, que même seul sur scène, il était tout à fait capable de faire briller sa musique !

Son set s’est, comme une évidence, terminée sous les applaudissements !

Raymond (guitar), Alex (bass), Arnout (drums), Geert (keyboard), Pieter (guitar/vocals), Cedric, Lisbeth and Farchod (violin), Harm (cello) and finally Geike (vocals) arrive on stage to rapturous applause!

The set kicks off with the track Cheek to Cheek, and it’s a big slap in the face! Geike‘s dandy looks give her a monstrous charisma.

The band continues to please us by offering us a song in French. Raymond announces it by making fun of his own accent and making a series of jokes, which makes us laugh a lot, he tells us that this version of the song is their favourite, and that they would like to create an ultimate version and that’s when the cover of “le temps qui court” initially sung by Alain Chamfort begins.

Geike often goes back to drinking tea from her mug (she does have a bit of a sore throat, which in no way detracts from her vocal qualities).

They ask around the room to see if there are any Belgians too, and we learn that one man has come from Spain for this date, and another goes one better by telling us that he’s from Phoenix (Arizona), so these are bold and devoted fans!

Arrive sur scène, Raymond (guitare), Alex (bassiste), Arnout (batterie), Geert (clavier), Pieter (guitare voix), Cedric, Lisbeth et Farchod (violon), Harm (violoncelle) et enfin Geike (voix) sous les applaudissements déchainés !

Le set débute donc sur le morceau Cheek to Cheek, grosse claque d’entrée !!! Geike a un look dandy qui lui donne un charisme monstrueux.

Le groupe continue de nous faire plaisir en nous proposant une chanson en français c’est Raymond qui l’annonce en se moquant de son propre accent et en enchainant les blagues, ce qui fait beaucoup rire, il nous dit que de cette version de cette chanson est leur préférée, et qu’ils aimeraient créer une ultime version et c’est là que débute la reprise de « le temps qui court » initialement chanté par Alain Chamfort, sur cette reprise, là encore le constat est positivement unanime !

Geike retourne très souvent boire du thé dans son mug (en effet elle a un peu mal à la gorge, ce qui n’empiète en rien sur ses qualités vocales).

Ils interrogent la salle pour savoir s’il y a des belges aussi et on apprend alors qu’un homme est venu d’Espagne pour cette date, et un autre surenchéri en nous informant que lui vient de Phoenix (Arizona), voilà donc des fans téméraires et dévoués !!!

As for Alex, he regularly gets the audience singing along like an orchestra conductor, with applause at the end of each song.

On Badaboum, Pieter joins Geike for a superb vocal duet that gets everyone in agreement and gets us in a festive mood.

On ‘Mad about you‘ everyone’s breath is taken away, and I’m personally teary-eyed with emotion. This live version fills me with even more melancholy than usual, and a lot of phones are in the air to immortalise this suspended moment!

When the band left the stage, the dressing room was abuzz with laughter from the artists and screams from the audience. Geike did a few more vocals and reappeared on stage wearing a magnificent gold lamé dress.

On the track ‘Sometimes‘, the audience sing along to the chorus so loudly that she ends up leaving them alone on the final chorus.

The crowd were in a frenzy when the band left the stage again, and they were so desperate for more that the band returned one last time to perform “fake is the new dope“, their latest hit, leaving the audience blissfully satisfied.

Alex quant à lui fait régulièrement chanter le public tel un chef d’orchestre, les applaudissements rythme chaque fin de chanson.

Sur le titre Badaboum, Pieter rejoint Geike pour un superbe duo vocal qui met tout le monde d’accord et qui nous transporte dans une humeur festive.

Sur « Mad about you » tout le monde a le souffle coupé, j’ai personnellement les larmes aux bords des yeux d’émotions, cette version live m’empli encore plus que d’habitude de mélancolie et  beaucoup de téléphones sont en l’air pour immortaliser ce moment suspendu !

Quand le groupe quitte la scène, en loge c’est l’effervescence, on entend les rires des artistes et les hurlements du public, Geike refait quelques vocalises et réapparait sur scène avec une magnifique robe lamé doré.

Sur le titre « Sometimes » le public chante en cœur le refrain si fort, qu’elle finit même par les laisser seuls sur le dernier refrain.

Le public est en furie quand le groupe sort de nouveau de scène, et il est si demandeur pour plus, que le groupe y retourne une dernière fois pour interpréter « fake is the new dope », leur dernier tube ce qui laisse le public béat.

The concert over, the band return to the dressing room with broad smiles on their faces, laughing, sharing their feelings, getting changed and finally going to the merch, which is being sold out, to sign autographs and take photos, much to the delight of the audience present. They take the time to chat with everyone, the faces are happy and admiring on the fans’ side, smiling and friendly on the band’s side.

Le concert fini, le groupe retourne en loge le sourire large, ils rigolent, partagent leur ressenti, se changent pour finalement se rendre au merch qui se fait dévaliser, afin de signer des autographes et prendre des photos pour le plus grand bonheur du public présent. Ils prennent le temps de papoter avec chaque personne, les visages sont réjouis et admiratifs du côté des fans, souriants et avenants du côté du groupe.

It’s been an emotional evening, and I’d like to thank Hooverphonic for their warm welcome, as well as voulez-vous danser, Ann the manager, the whole Alhambra team and the audience, who were just as iconic that night! I’m off home now, and no doubt I’ll be dreaming sweet dreams as the band hit the road again.

Ce fut une soirée riche en émotion, je me dois de remercier Hooverphonic pour leur accueil, ainsi que voulez-vous danser, Ann la manageuse, toute l’équipe de l’Alhambra ainsi que ce public tout aussi iconique que cette soirée !!! Je rentre chez moi, et nul doute que je ferai de jolis rêves pendant que le groupe reprend la route.
