We spent a day backstage at this spectacular drag production, stepping inside a fast-paced world where every detail matters and nothing is left to chance.

Les paillettes, les costumes extravagants et les standing ovations ne sont que la partie visible du spectacle. Derrière chaque numéro se cache une mécanique parfaitement huilée où artistes, technicien·nes, bénévoles et équipes du Consulat œuvrent pendant des heures pour que, le temps d’une soirée, tout paraisse simple. Nous avons passé une partie de la journée dans les coulisses de ce cabaret drag. Immersion dans un univers où rien n’est laissé au hasard.

1:00 PM: The Day Is Just Getting Started
Long before the first audience members arrive, the crew is already hard at work. Behind the scenes, preparations have been underway for hours.
Load-in and technical rehearsals begin at 1:00 PM. One by one, the performers take the stage to fine-tune microphones, lighting cues, stage positions, and every last technical detail.
But rehearsals go far beyond the performances themselves. Every entrance and exit is carefully mapped out. Every line is rehearsed. Every transition is timed down to the second to keep the show running seamlessly from start to finish.
And this day is only the final chapter of weeks of preparation. Three full rehearsals had already taken place the previous month, followed by three more this month, all leading up to the highly anticipated July production.

Quand les premiers spectateurs sont encore loin d’imaginer leur soirée, les équipes sont déjà au travail depuis plusieurs heures.
Les balances débutent dès 13 heures. Les artistes se succèdent sur scène pour régler les micros, les retours, les lumières et les derniers détails techniques.
Mais les répétitions ne concernent pas uniquement les performances. Ici, tout est travaillé. Les entractes sont répétés. Les prises de parole aussi. Les poèmes. Les déplacements. Chaque transition est minutée pour que le spectacle conserve son rythme.
Et cette journée n’est que l’aboutissement de plusieurs semaines de travail. Trois répétitions avaient déjà été organisées il y a un mois, puis trois nouvelles ce mois-ci, en parallèle de la préparation du spectacle prévu en juillet.

A Massive Team Effort
It doesn’t take long to realize that a production like this is about far more than the performers on stage. Behind the curtain is an entire team working tirelessly to bring the show to life: stage managers, lighting technicians, runners, rigging crews hanging aerial silks, box office staff, bartenders, kitchen crews, and countless others offering a fresh set of eyes to fine-tune every last detail.
And then there are the volunteers.
They’re everywhere at once. In less than two hours, they transform the venue, set up equipment, move scenery, welcome artists, and jump from one task to the next, always with a smile. Their dedication is what keeps the entire production running smoothly.
The team at Le Consulat also plays a vital role in making the event a success. From programming and venue operations to hospitality and bar service, everyone knows exactly what they need to do. It’s the kind of quiet, behind-the-scenes coordination that audiences rarely notice, but without it, none of the magic would be possible.

Une immense aventure collective
Rapidement, on comprend qu’une soirée comme celle-ci ne repose pas uniquement sur les artistes.
Autour de la scène gravitent une multitude de personnes indispensables : la régie générale, la régie son, les éclairagistes, la poursuite, les personnes chargées d’installer les tissus aériens, la billetterie, les équipes du bar, la cuisine, celles et ceux qui apportent un regard extérieur pendant les répétitions pour affiner chaque détail.
Et puis il y a les bénévoles.
Impossible de les compter tant ils sont partout à la fois. En un peu moins de deux heures, ils montent entièrement la scène, installent le matériel, déplacent les éléments techniques, accueillent les artistes et enchaînent les missions sans jamais perdre le sourire.
L’équipe du Consulat veille également au bon déroulement de l’événement. Programmation, exploitation, accueil, bar… chacun connaît son rôle. Une organisation discrète, mais essentielle.

6:00 PM: Final Touches Before Showtime
Just a few hours before the doors open, no one lets their guard down.
Babyskyn finishes one last aerial silk routine while other performers run through choreography for the final time. A step is adjusted here, an entrance is refined there. Every last detail is polished, offering a glimpse of the spectacular show that’s about to unfold.
Backstage, the pace never slows.
But inside the dressing rooms, the atmosphere tells a different story.
Far from the energy roaring through the venue, a quiet sense of focus takes over. Mirrors become each artist’s closest companion. Faces gradually transform. Wigs are carefully styled. False eyelashes are applied with remarkable precision. One by one, the costumes bring each character to life.
Watching these transformations happen in real time is a show in itself.

18h : derniers réglages avant le grand saut
À quelques heures de l’ouverture des portes, personne ne relâche son attention.
Babyskyn termine ses balances pendant que d’autres artistes reprennent encore quelques chorégraphies. Un pas est corrigé ici, une entrée retravaillée là. Les derniers ajustements donnent déjà un aperçu d’un spectacle qui s’annonce grandiose.
En cuisine, le rythme ne ralentit pas non plus.
Dans les loges, l’ambiance surprend.
Loin de l’effervescence que l’on pourrait imaginer, le calme domine. Les pinceaux remplacent les applaudissements, les miroirs deviennent les meilleurs alliés des artistes. Les visages se transforment progressivement. Une perruque est ajustée. Une paire de faux cils est posée avec précision. Les costumes prennent vie.
Voir ces personnages naître sous nos yeux est déjà un spectacle.

At last, the doors open.
Even before the show officially begins, a few drag performers are already making their way through the crowd. They exchange knowing smiles with audience members, strike playful poses for photos, and warmly greet fans as excitement starts to build. The energy in the room grows with every passing minute. The audience is ready. And showtime is just moments away.

19h15 : le public entre en scène
Les portes ouvrent enfin.
Avant même que le spectacle ne commence, quelques drags déambulent déjà dans la salle. Elles échangent quelques regards complices avec le public, prennent des poses, saluent les premiers rangs. L’ambiance monte doucement. Les spectateurs sont prêts.

8:15 PM: More Than a Show
The applause fades, and Manly B steps into the spotlight.
Instantly, they connect with the crowd before introducing the people who make this venue what it is. First comes Violette, chef and co-owner of Sababa, whose restaurant brings together Palestinian and Israeli cuisine. The project was born from a simple yet powerful belief: breaking down walls by bringing people together around the same table. Since opening, Sababa has welcomed people from all backgrounds, proving that food can be a powerful way to build dialogue and connection. The heartfelt speech is met with warm, sustained applause.
Next, Rodrigue takes the microphone to explain the show’s tipping system, inviting the audience to directly support the artists who bring the night’s performances to life.

20h15 : un cabaret qui porte aussi un message
Sous les applaudissements, Manly B monte sur scène.
Elle prend immédiatement la température de la salle avant de présenter les équipes qui font vivre le lieu.
Elle invite ensuite Violette, cheffe de Sababa, à prendre le micro. Son restaurant, qui propose une cuisine palestinienne et israélienne, est né d’une envie simple : « faire tomber les murs ». Depuis près d’un an, le projet rassemble des publics différents autour d’une même table.
Le discours est chaleureux, sincère, largement applaudi.
Puis Rodrigue présente le système de tips qui permettra au public de soutenir directement les artistes.

The applause swells as Manly B returns to the microphone.
Accompanied by pianist Lucien, they quietly open the evening with a haunting spoken-word performance.
“This evening, you’re stepping into a tale shaped by scars and beauty.”
The room falls completely silent.
As a few drag performers slowly make their way through the audience, Manly B reminds everyone that drag isn’t just about putting on a show. It’s about the people who have been labeled as monsters, yet chose to survive, create, and transform their wounds into strength.
“Tonight, the monsters don’t hide.”
At the top of the staircase, the performers finally appear.
A breathtaking ensemble number unfolds. One by one, each artist steps into the spotlight before blending seamlessly back into the larger tableau. Little by little, the story begins to take shape.
Then the music erupts. Costumes transform. Doors swing open. Gravity-defying aerial performances leave the audience speechless.
Manly B calls on the crowd to raise the energy.
“Turn up the heat!”
The audience roars the words right back.
In just a few minutes, the structure of the night is already clear: a slow, hypnotic build fueled by anticipation, before plunging headfirst into a fiery, exhilarating spectacle.The tone has been set.

20h30 : « Ici, les monstres ne se cachent pas. »
Les applaudissements redoublent lorsque Manly B reprend le micro.
Accompagnée au piano par Lucien, elle ouvre véritablement le spectacle.
« Ce soir, vous êtes dans une faille lumineuse, remplie de paillettes, de cicatrices et de beaucoup de maquillage. »
Pendant que quelques drags traversent lentement la salle, Manly B rappelle que les personnes drag ont toujours existé. Son texte évoque celles et ceux que l’on a qualifiés de monstres, mais qui ont choisi de résister, de créer et de transformer leurs blessures en force.
« Ici, les monstres ne se cachent pas. »
Au sommet des escaliers, les artistes apparaissent.
Une immense chorégraphie débute. Chacune devient tour à tour le centre du tableau avant de descendre rejoindre la scène. Peu à peu, le groupe se forme.
Puis la musique éclate. Les corps s’entremêlent. Les portés s’enchaînent. Les acrobaties impressionnent.
Manly B fait alors lever toute la salle.
 « Chaleur ! »
Le public répond en chœur.
Elle annonce la structure de la soirée : une première partie comme une montée organique, presque orgasmique, avant une descente en enfer de chaleur. Le ton est donné.

The night unfolds at a relentless pace, with each performance bringing its own distinct energy. Marion opens with a breathtaking routine that’s equal parts athletic and poetic, blending contemporary dance, juggling, and acrobatics into a mesmerizing performance that leaves the audience spellbound.
Between acts, Manly B returns to the stage to announce the show’s upcoming dates, July 18 and 19, and launches a giveaway, offering lucky audience members the chance to win tickets.
Then Mezar Al Hiyam cranks the energy all the way up with a drag king performance that’s both irresistibly sexy and undeniably powerful.
Before introducing the next act, Manly B takes a moment to reflect on the origins of Pride and the 1969 Stonewall Uprising in New York, reminding the audience that celebration and activism have always gone hand in hand.
Shanna Pole then commands the stage.
Surrounded by two dancers, she delivers a fiery lip-sync performance that electrifies the room and brings the crowd to its feet.
During intermission, the performers weave through the audience collecting tips while the ticket giveaway continues, creating yet another opportunity for fans to interact directly with the artists.
To close out the sequence, Manly B returns with a solo number combining lip-sync and choreography before the rest of the cast joins them for a striking ensemble performance, bringing the entire company together on stage once again.

Puis Mezar Al Hiyam fait exploser l’énergie de la salle avec un numéro de drag king aussi sexy que puissant.
Avant d’accueillir l’artiste suivante, Manly B revient sur les origines de la Pride et les émeutes de Stonewall en 1969 à New York, rappelant que la fête est aussi un héritage de luttes.
Shanna Pole prend ensuite possession de la scène.
Entourée de deux danseuses, elle livre un lipsync incandescent qui embrase littéralement la salle.
Pendant un entracte, les artistes traversent les rangs pour récolter les tips du public, pendant que le concours livre son verdict.
Manly B offre ensuite son propre numéro, mêlant lipsync et chorégraphie avant d’être rejointe par les autres artistes pour un tableau collectif.

The show returns with another dazzling lineup of drag performances before the spotlight shifts to Cheryl Quinn.
During the opening moments of Lady Marmalade, she appears in an extravagant cabaret-inspired costume before suddenly vanishing. A few suspenseful seconds later, the audience erupts as she reappears on the upper level in a completely different outfit, pulling off one of the evening’s most unforgettable reveals. Just after the intermission, and only seconds after returning to the venue, the crowd is immediately swept back into the show’s energy.
Then comes Babyskyn. Already astonishing earlier in the night with her aerial silks performance, she somehow manages to raise the bar even higher with an act of breathtaking intensity.
Visibly moved, she takes a moment to thank the audience and encourages everyone to follow the performers on social media before paying tribute to Miss Eau de Javel, who passed away the previous week. The emotion lingers as Manly B returns to center stage for one of the evening’s most unexpected moments: a fully live performance featuring theater, spoken word, a cappella vocals, and burlesque.
Then the piano begins to play.
Lucien’s voice rises through the room as an aerial silk slowly descends from the ceiling. A hush falls over the audience. The performance is breathtaking.
Moments later, Sheli Tan takes over the stage in an elegant hoop act. Suspended high above the audience, she flows effortlessly before returning to the floor for a hypnotic lip-sync performance, creating one of the night’s most visually striking sequences.
Before the finale, Manly B has one last surprise.
Lucien is about to release his debut single, and tonight the audience gets an exclusive first listen to the track, live, before anyone else.

Arrive ensuite Babyskyn. Déjà impressionnante lors des balances quelques heures plus tôt, elle confirme toutes les attentes avec une performance d’une incroyable intensité.
Très émue, elle prend ensuite le micro pour remercier le public, inviter chacun à la suivre sur les réseaux sociaux et rendre hommage à Miss Eau de Javel, disparue la semaine précédente.
L’émotion envahit la salle. Mais Manly B reprend rapidement le fil du spectacle. Elle livre un moment totalement inattendu. Théâtre. Chant a cappella. Effeuillage.
Puis, accompagnée du piano de Lucien, elle s’élève dans les airs grâce à un tissu suspendu. Le silence s’installe. Le numéro est d’une beauté saisissante.
